View Full Version : Background Checks

Last night I applied to a bunch of companies and websites for various jobs. This morning I got a call from a recruiter who was very enthusiastic about my resume that it matched perfectly with what the company he was calling about was looking for. On the phone he told me that he condensed my resume and tailored it more to what the company who was hiring was looking for. I didn't think much of it so I said sure. He also told me that he would send me the edited resume so I can refer to it. The company was extremely interested in me and they arranged a phone interview for this afternoon. I never got the resume so I had to sort've wing it over the phone. The interview went very well and the woman I spoke with told me that she would contact the recruiter about setting up a formal interview. I was beyond happy because I've been interested in working for this company for a while.

So I get home and I find in my email the recruiter had sent me the resume later on. I looked it over and not only did he condense the resume, but he changed my actual job title from a supervisor to a sr human resources position. Granted the job I'm going for is a human resources position, but that isn't my current title. I'm worried now if they do a background check won't that show? Or do you think the recruiter with bury that portion of the background check (if they do the check themselves)?

Do you think this means I'm screwed. I've never experienced something like that happening and I'm not entirely sure about what does or doesn't show on a background check.

hey reef, this is basically what i asked in my last thread before it got hijacked. sort of. condensing a resume, you can place that on the heads of the recruiter. should you be worried? i guess, no. it's out of your hands; but i would imagine that that can be taken care of in the interview.

getting the most recent playboy i was able to get some answers. checkout www.allisontaylor.com. it costs $80, but you can have your references looked into.

I would think that if you can call the woman you interviewed with and told her that a copy was sent to you as well with the incorrect title of your current position, that it will hold some merit and show your honesty. Maybe it is a test of some kind?

Following SR71's advice...

Earlier this morning I called the woman at the company and left her a voicemail to call me. I then tried calling the recruiter as well just to ask him why he changed my job title, though I went straight to his voicemail. I didn't leave a message.

I just got off the phone with the woman and explained to her what happened. I pointed out that I knew he condensed my resume to highlight my human resources experience though I wasn't aware that he would change my job title. I told her that I didn't want to misrepresent myself and that I hoped this wouldn't affect my chances. She said that she didn't think it would, and asked that I forward her my full resume which I just did. Hopefully I'll still have a chance.

you really don't need to be totally literal with your resume ... a huge mistake is to fill your resume with jargon & title that don't necessarily translate outside your department ... i have four varieties of my resume to cater to the specific aspect of my background ...

your resume is your ticket to the interview ... in the course of the interview, you have the opportunity to expain your self better or clear anything

It just depends on the company...the bigger companies definitely check grades, references, etc....If you are interviewing with HR they probably will check....but if you are interviewing with the head of, say accounting, they don't care nor do they have enough time to check. If they are using a recruiter they are in a rush to fill the position (my father in law owns a recruiting company) and will assume that people won't lie on their resume in fear that they may check. I got a job working as an analyst directly for the COO of a fairly large Financial Institution right out of college. I graduated with a 2.4, they wanted someone with a 3.3....I gave myself a 3.6 and I have been working here for over 4 years....do what you have to to get your foot in the door....if the recruiter was the one who lied, you have nothing to worry about, they place people at the same companies over and over again....they know who will check and who will not. Remembered they get paid only when they place you and you are there for over 6 months (usually)....they aren't going to put you in a position to lose the job

that is what my wife says....but in reality it is not something I am proud of. I wish I did some work in college, but I didn't and I cant change that....but I am not going to just say "oh well, guess I can't get a good job now"

you really don't need to be totally literal with your resume

I can understand that, though isn't it important as far as your job title to list what it actually was? I don't have a problem with editing or tailoring a resume towards a specific area and condensing information. However to change your job title from one thing to another seems misleading and I think it could be detrimental.

They double checked everything and a few people got fired for lying. I work for a huge corp tho.
