Loved the book, can't wait for the flick.

You can see the trailer here.

Basically, it's Three Kings (in tone and style and attitude)...except a true story. It was a book that came out about a year or so ago by a guy who grew up in a military family, and only ever wanted to be a Marine and how his time in the first Iraq war changed his life, for the better and the worse. It's a fascinating, funny, sad and infuriating read, and the reviews and trailers for the film are making it out to be pretty fucking fantastic.

And I love the use of "Jesus Walks" in the trailer...

"Welcome to the suck."

Dancing with the women at the bar... << He knows his Claret from his Beaujolais >> "You can tell some lies about the good times we've had, but I've kissed your mother twice...and now I'm working on your dad..."

I would love to see JUST ONE movie that is actually an accurate depiction of the military. I wonder....will Jarhead be that movie?

I would also love to see a movie that accurately depicts life on the road with a rock band but, it seems "hollywood" and "accurate" do not get along.

Is this some sort of hippie liberal antiwar bullshit here? So far the only movie in November that's a must-see to me is Harry Potter.

I don't know if I can watch this anyway, as I hate Jack Gyllenhall.

From Publisher's Weekly:

A witty, profane, down-in-the-sand account of the war many only know from CNN, this former sniper's debut is a worthy addition to the battlefield memoir genre. There isn't a bit of heroic posturing as Swofford describes the sheer terror of being fired upon by Iraqi troops; the elite special forces warrior freely admits wetting himself once rockets start exploding around his unit's encampment. But the adrenaline of battle is fleeting, and Swofford shows how it's in the waiting that soldiers are really made. With blunt language and bittersweet humor, he vividly recounts the worrying, drinking, joking, lusting and just plain sitting around that his troop endured while wondering if they would ever put their deadly skills to use. As Operation Desert Shield becomes Desert Storm, one of Swofford's fellow snipers-the most macho of the bunch-solicits a hug from each man. "We are about to die in combat, so why not get one last hug, one last bit of physical contact," Swofford writes. "And through the hugs [he] helps make us human again." When they do finally fight, Swofford questions whether the men are as prepared as their commanders, the American public and the men themselves think they are. Swofford deftly uses flashbacks to chart his journey from a wide-eyed adolescent with a family military legacy to a hardened fighter who becomes consumed with doubt about his chosen role. As young soldiers might just find themselves deployed to the deserts of Iraq, this book offers them, as well as the casual reader, an unflinching portrayal of the loneliness and brutality of modern warfare and sophisticated analyses of-and visceral reactions to-its politics.

So, yeah, more queer commie liberal bullshit from yet another faggot hippie socialist war veteran. When will those guys ever learn?!?

Yeah, but I don't want to see my American soldiers crying and pissing themselves because bombs are dropping. I want to see them killing and maiming and shitting on the corpses of their enemies. Like John Wayne. I'm pretty sure I saw John Wayne drop a deuce on some poor Japanese fucker in The Sands of Iwo Jima.

Well, there's a review up on the IMDB that somewhat addresses the idea of "bias" that so terrifies people these days...

I saw a promotional screening of the film, sponsored by my university. Following the screening was an audience Q&A with the author (and main character), Tony Swofford.

And it was no surprise that the very first question from the audience was, quite ambiguously, "Do you support the military?" When Swofford dismissed the question as too broad and complex to be answered with a simple yes or no, the inquirer followed up with, "Well, do you support the war?" Swofford dismissed this even more readily.

To me, this was perfectly representative of how the film handled its potential political implications.

As Troy says early on in the film, "To hell with politics. We're here now." And that's essentially how the movie went.

It bypasses the soapbox and simply tells you how it was, from the perspective of a single soldier. And while the opening boot camp scenes may seem like Full Metal Jacket Lite, the rest of the film is truly unique.

Sam Mendes directs with his usual brilliance, showing once again his affinity for bright, vivid color, even in the largely monochromatic desert.

Jake Gyllenhaal gives an excellent performance as Anthony Swofford, complemented by the able talents of Jamie Foxx and Peter Sarsgaard.

In the words of jim norton, 'phenomenal'. I read the book
cause i couldn't wait for this movie to come out and it stayed as close
to the book as any movie. definately a must see.

The acting was superb and the art direction was
some of the best i've ever seen. And it didn't get bogged down by
politics. It was just the story of one soldiers experience.

Interesting discussion of the movie from WNYC (http://www.wnyc.org/shows/bl/episodes/11032005)

Fast foward to clip #4 "War on Film" on the Real Player.

The subject is mostly about even anti-war movies being used as
"military porn". In the movie, they use "Apocolypse Now" to get
soldiers ready for battle, its one of the main scenes in Jarhead.

Yeah, that was a big part of the book...the soliders are trying to keep themselves pumped when they're in a warzone without any war.

Damn work has kept me from seeing this yet, so hopefully I'll see it on Tuesday.

Very divided reviews at RottenTomatos.com.

Most of the negative reviews seem to be missing the main point...they complain that "nothing happens" or the movie is ambivalent in its politics...those ARE the points. Swofford was writing about the irony of being trained intensely to be a killing machine and then never receiving the promised outlet for those skills and emotions. His book is also not overly criticial or supportive of the larger politics...in the book he writes how most of the guys he was with new this was a war mostly about business, oil and money...their main objective was to finally practice their craft as snipers in a warzone. So many of these reviewers desperately want this be a blatantly "anti-war" film, and it's not, nor was it ever meant to be. It's simply what happened to this one man.

Dancing with the women at the bar... << He knows his Claret from his Beaujolais >> "You can tell some lies about the good times we've had, but I've kissed your mother twice...and now I'm working on your dad..."

Finally had enough free time to see this movie and I loved it.

I was one of those soldiers..going nuts from the boredom and yet, always being incredibly busy. It does take it's toll.

Sure, the movie was a bit stylized (all the soldiers are buff, small arms sound like cannons, yada yada yada) but, for the most part...I thought it did a very good job of displaying the "hurry up and wait" mentality that military seems to enforce.

The military can be rewarding. Unfortunatley, it more often is rather MINDLESS. It's enough to make a strong, confident, well educated soldier go slowly insane.
