In honor of the show turning 30 (First aired October 11, 1975). And since the show should have probably been put to rest a long time ago. Who's your favorite dead cast member?

Gotta go with Phil Hartman. The guy did EVERYTHING. And it seemed everyone of his characters was funny. Love Farley, but still gotta pick Hartman.

Phil Hartman was amazing, and Gilda Radner was brilliant, but John Belushi was my favorite. I still remember where I was when I learned of his death and how ridiculously depressed it made me (I must have been about 12 or 13). A few years later, my senior class in high school wanted to dedicate the yearbook to his memory; we were shot down, so we went with a teacher who would be fired by the end of the school year for allegations of indiscretions with female students. By the time he was fired, though, it was too late for us to go back and change the yearbook, so it came out with this disgraced teacher getting a glowing tribute on a page filled with pictures of him with students (including one of the young women that accused him). We did get a random picture of Belushi in the yearbook, though, just on a montage page.

Danitra Vance did a skit that I loved - a take off of "The Girl" called "That Black Girl."

Belushi is buried on Martha's Vineyard and people actually go and
party at his grave. There's always at least 3 beer bottles or
cans on top of his stone. His wife has no opposition to this
because this is what he always wished for.

I do have to vote for Hartman. He was also pretty hilarious on Newsradio.

I am a devout SNL fan. The same way people look forward to the Super Bowl or World Series...that's how I am with SNL.

Been a fan since my father started taking me to the SNL studio when I was 13 (he works there) so, it's hard for me to pick a fave SEASON, let alone an individual player.

Since I'm only 34, I missed those first few years "back when it was funny". I was too young to get it then and now....I just don't think those first years age all that well. When I see them, I just don't laugh. I see potential in some of the skits but, in my opinion it just wasn't quite "there" yet. So, I can't put the mighty John Belushi on the list. He was AMAZING in The Blues Brothers Movie but, that's a whole other thang.

Of course, Will Ferrell is a legendary cast member. And Farley got big laughs. BUT:

I think Phil Hartman was the best utility player the show ever had. Probably the best it will EVER have. He could actually ACT and he didn't really lean on the cue cards the way, say, Horatio or Fallon does (did). Hartman wasn't a laugh factory, he was the straight guy who made me laugh just a little bit, but he could pull out HUGE laughs when the time was right. I think he was truly brilliant.

RIP Phil.

my personal favorite dead SNL cast members were john belushi, gilda radner, chris farley and phil hartman. among the living ones, chevy chase--the funniest he ever was besides the original fletch movie and the 1st vacation movie and the christmas vacation movie. and that's it. back to SNL, chris farley was hysterical that was a crying shame when we lost him. chris farley and david spade were an awesomely funny team i thought. eddie murphy of course and from the newer bunch i loved will ferell and chris kattan. night at the roxbury, loved it. I can't believe I forgot mike myers and dana carvey doing waynes world and i loved dana's church lady skit. TTFN, THE G-LADY

Phil Hartman all the way with Chris Farley comin in at a close 2nd place. If I was a little older I might have chosen Belushi, but I've only seen a couple episodes with him, and Animal House.

Looks like there's another dead SNL castmember to add to the list. I was tooling around the Daily Variety link that BDC posted in the Rocky 6 thread and I see that Charles Rocket committed suicide on October 7th. To give you an idea of what a shlub this guy was, they only got around to reporting it on the 14th, and as far as I can tell NO ONE else has even picked up on it.

For those too young too remember - he was part of what is universally agreed upon was the absolute worst cast in SNL history, and one of the unfunniest Weekend Update hosts ever. He was around for only one year, after the original cast left. I believe he was part of the Gilbert Gotfried cast, most of whom were fired after they nearly ran the show into the ground. His big claim to fame is that he dropped the F-bomb live on the air.

Via Con Dios, Charles.

Heres the link, if anyone cares:http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117931030?categoryid=1043&cs=1&query=obituaries &display=obituaries
"It's easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat. But the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat."
