I was about to begin classes next week and received the following letter. It tells me not to contact anyone at the school regarding this which really troubles me, and I don't know what to do. It seems like they are closing their Stamford, CT campus, but says we can go to the Willimantic Campus. Big problem there, as that campus is over 2 hours from my house. I work full time, and there's no way I can get there in time for class. Now I have another $14,000+ in loans, plus text books and a massage table sitting here getting pissed away. Pardon my french, but what the fuck? Wondering if anybody can give me advise. I know I'll just probably have to wait and see what the options are, which I have a feeling is going to end up really screwing me and others, but I am very impatient. Here is the letter:

In 2002 Galen Institute brought a Federal lawsuit against Commissioner Lewis of the CT Department of Higher Education. SInce that time, DHE has been retaliating against Galen, causing many serious problems for the school and students. Galen's legal, accounting and business advisors have directed us to conduct complete audit of Galen in order to continue its legal fight with DHE and continue to operate as a viable school. Regrettably, this includes an immediate restructuring of our campus system and the closure of our New London and Stamford branches. To that effect:

All schools will be closed (no staff will work) until Tuesday, November 1
All classes will be suspended until Tuesday, November 1
New London and Stamford students will have options to continue their training at the Willimantic School and will restart November 1

There will be a detailed information letter with all of your options sent out in several weeks covering all details regarding this matter with additonal contact information. As I am working with our legal and professional counsel on this one, the staff will not be able to answer any questions or concerns that you may have.

I really don't think they can do anything to you if you ask, but if
you want to be on the safe side, feign ignorance. Call the campus info
number, and ask an innocent question like, "what time do the buildings
open on this day?" and don't mention the letter. It sounds
shady to me, (but I'm a suspicious cynical type) and like some
political forces are trying to use students to undermine somebody, and
you've got better things to do with your time than play that game.

Good luck.

thanks. i've tried calling over the summer with questions i've had, and nobody ever called me back. same thing happened when i called after getting this letter. the email addresses were also bouncing back too. i did send an email that went through. havent received a response yet. of course, when i first checked out the school, the woman was calling me every day. i guess i need to wait and see what they're going to say, and not try to stress out so much about all the what ifs.

Show up in person with a baseball bat. When they ask what the hell you are doing say, "Well, you said no CALLS!" That should get their attention.

If they will not answer you, get your money back. If you have to,
call your local Better Business Bureau and ask them for some advice.

This morning I received a letter from the CT Dept. of Higher Education and they sent me a complaint form with a letter. Apparently, my school did not give any notification to the DHE regarding campus closures, which they are required by law to do, and now they are contacting my school's owner about this. They suggested I send the school a letter with a request for withdrawal and request for tuition refund, and to submit the complaint form if my school does not respond or satisfy my request. So, before I do anything, I just want to wait for the second letter I'm supposed to get from my school regarding my options. Either way, I will be sending this complaint form. It is so comforting to have received this letter, knowing that I can definitely fight it.

well, the campus is officially closed. apparently, the second letter (which i still haven't received) said to send a request to the school pres IF we feel we're owed a refund. So I've done that. I've sent in my information to the CT Dept of Higher Education, who told me it would take SEVERAL months before I may even see a refund. I've filed a complaint with the BBB which said it'd take at least 30 days to get back to me. Meanwhile, I'm stuck paying a $10,000 loan. $5k of it is a personal loan, which I understand I can't really do anything about that. However, the remaining loan is through a company that this school uses. I called them to tell them that the campus is closed and I'm not attending, but apparently, I'm still obligated to pay them until they receive the necessary paperwork from this school, which you know the'll never send. I'm at my wit's end. I have no idea what to do now. I can't even think of going to another school until this loan thing is settled. I'm already totally broke, living off my credit card in order to pay this fucking loan off now.

I'd say it's time to lawyer up! That's what they say in Boston....no they don't. Hell, you're going to lose a lot of money in interest alone with these loans that were accepted getting nothing in return. It also seems they did nothing to inform the students or the DHE of the closing. This itself seems to have broken protocal and probably a few laws as well. They have no reason to hold on to your money, and there misfortune is no excuse to break laws, DHE protocals, and hold onto loans for students who were left out in the cold. Also, this sets you back in terms of your schooling time schedule. This is another factor that needs to be addressed. It's not as if you can just sign up for another school down the road now bc of time issues and of course financial ones. Tough spot, good luck.

I am in desparate need of a lawyer.

http://www.galeninstitute.com/

According to the DHE, non CT residents are entitled to a refund, which is not indicated at all in the contract I signed. The woman at the DHE that is handling this is a total cunt. The school pays the DHE for insurance that is supposed to refund any student, and there are reports that the DHE uses the money for their employees.
