Did anybody go and see this ?

It looks decent from the clips but those can always be misleading.

I was reading an interview with John Carpenter and he didn;t seem to upbeat about it.

He basically said that his name was only attached to tie it to the original.

I read between the lines as that mean to lend it credibility.

He said that it was probably one of the last of his movies that he'd have remade and that the original was more Debra Hill's, his longtime associate who died this past year, pet project.

He made some interesting points about not wanting to be involved because the curent direct never likes when the " original " director butts in.

His comparison was that he would've hated it if the original director of The Thing was in any way involved in his remake.

He said that if he ever remade one of his movies it'd be They Live.

I'll try and get a link to the interview.

Haven't seen it yet, but I'm ascared to.

John Carpeter makes me love movies, and I wanna strangle him. He has so many movies that are so close, but just miss the mark, or miss it entirely. The rare hits, IMO:

Assault on Precinct 13
Halloween
The Thing
Christine [maybe]
Escape from NY [maybe]

are offset by the shoulda/coulda/would been great ones that, again IMO, start off great but fade into second halfs that well beats me but they miss the mark for me, and I love most of these...

The Fog [love beginning, then...]
They Live [actually this is my fave in some ways, but...]
Prince of Darkness [beats me...]
Big Trouble in Little China [again, love it, but not sure...]
Escape from LA [surfing? no.]
Ghosts of Mars [ummmm....]
Vampires ['Pole Smoking Fashion Victim', now thats at least one good line...]

Some amazing stuff in most of them, but his twists and turns and often abrupt untied ending Really wrok when they work, and Really suck when they don't. I thought Debra Hill had a hand in this re-make, she co-wote Halloween and much of the early JC stuff.

Some of his best work? His movie music. If he wasnt a director he might be known as one of the best scorers of horror films. Its him on writing, scoring, and playing much of the stuff you hear on his movies. The man knows his way around a synthesizer.

Begin your response here...

This post really hits the nail on the head concerning John Carpenter movies. I couldn't agree more.

On
a side note, I rented "Halloween" Saturday night and it was an extended
version. The extra footage was interesting, especially a
particular scene with Loomis and an adolescent Myers in the mental
institution. I was pleansantly surprised.

Yeah I've watched most of his movies out of " loyalty " but anything post-1980's was just not good.

I actually enjoyed Haloween 3 after getting over the disappointment that it wasnt Michael Meyers' related.

In The Mouth Of Madness was another one that I thought could be good but it was just lame.

His episode of that Masters Of Horror thing on cable ( where a bunch of horror directors made 30 min shorts of stories ) sounds interesting.

Unfortunately I'm at work and cant pull any links but I think its Showtime or Cinemax thats doing it.

The interview that I read was tied into some new PC game called (F)irst (E)ncounter (A)ssauly (R)econ.

Apparently Carpenter was the director of the game.

That extra footage you saw was from the broadcast premier on network television.

They had to add certain scenes because they removed others due to the content.

I thought there was going to be a new DVD edition of Halloween this year.

I love Selma Blair, but Adrienne Barbeau had something that I just liked about her. I just can't put my finger on it.

I finally saw the remake over the weekend and I didnt think it was that bad.

Stayed pretty close to the original.

Special effects were onviously better.

Story had some lame spots that didnt seem to be there in the original but overall I enjoyed it.

Not as good as the TCM and Dawn Of The Dead remakes though.
