View Full Version : 2005 MLB Offseason Moves Thread

There is already a Yanks offseason thread, and an "other MLB teams"
thread, but i didnt see an offseason thread. If its there, lock
it up.

A lot has happened already:

Girardi to the Marlins

Macha back to the A's

Leyland to the Tigers

Tracy to the Buccos

Frankly,
the only item here that interests me is the Jim Tracy hiring. The
rumors are that the Pirates will increase their payroll budget by up to
20%. I wish they would have done this maybe three or four years
ago to throw Lloyd a bone, but at this point nothing would have helped
him. He did a lot with some pretty inexperienced teams over the
last three or four years, but he never really had a chance to succeed.

Now
that the Pirates have a solid nucleus to work with and an expected
budget increase, they could make some noise next year.
Unfortunately, theres a pretty thin FA crop this year, adn they play in
a tough division with HOU and STL, and possibly the Cubs (depending on
how long it takes them to get a new mgr.)

I've heard they are going after Hank Blalock, but the Rangers (understandibly) are asking for a little too much.

There
are a couple interesting possible FAs at first. Namely Dmitri
Young, Sean Casey, and Aubrey Huff. I doubt any of them will even
consider Pittsburgh, but I can dream, can't I?

Thats enough rambling for me. For now at least...

If the money is right, they'll all play just about anywhere. The Jays are in a similar position. They have a lot a money to spend (by their standards) and also need a power hitter possibly at the usual first base spot. It looks like they might have an in with AJ Burnett, but I'm not holding my breath yet. It'd be great to go into 2006 with Halladay, Burnett, Towers, Chaucin and Downs as your starters. Still, they'd need a closer as Batista didn't do bad, but it wasn't that good either. Most of the bullpen was pretty solid, but nobody looked quite ready to jump up as the closer.

The Jays are in a similar situation in many respects as the
Pirates. They have a solid group of guys, especially in the
rotation, and almost no chance in hell to compete in their respective
divisions for at least another couple of years. I'd love to be
proven wrong, though.

The latest I've heard is that the O's have
a pretty good shot at Burnett as well. The O's need him in the
worst way possible, but going to the Jays would be a worthy cause as
well. Until they play the O's of course. Somehow all
those years of living in MD somehow rubbed off on me, that and the fact
that I absolutely hate the sox and yanks. Anyway, here's to
Burnett not going to one of those teams.
Dave mentioned three, are there any other big name free agents this
year? Being a Met fan I know that Wagner, Ryan, and Urbina are all free
agents...
The Red Sox did throw out the idea of a Manny Ramirez-Carlos Beltran deal in July, but it was on the weekend of the trading deadline after Ramirez had asked to be traded.
The Mets rejected the idea, and GMs Omar Minaya and Theo Epstein tried
to construct two-, three-, and four-way deals -- none of which worked.
"The ironic thing is that by the end of the weekend, Manny said he
would not go to the Mets," says Ramirez's agent Greg Genske of Legacy
Sports Group. "I know people have speculated about Pedro [Martinez] and his influence, but Manny does not want to be traded to the Mets."

As far as free agents, there are a handful of big names, including AJ
Burnett, Paul Konerko, Rafael Furcal, and a handful of others.
www.mlb4u.com/freeagent.html has a pretty comprehensive list of every
expiring contract, and it gets updated pretty often.
MIGHT be looking at selling the Cubs sometime soon.

I can't believe they bought the team for about $20 million back in the 80's, and it's now possibly worth $550 million.

Apparently Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is very interested. And I'd be very curious to see what a singular owner does for a team like this. One of the biggest gripes is that the Tribune spends like they only care about the bottom line...minimum investment for maximum return, profit-wise. For them, it's all about the tickets and the merchandise.

That could be the best thing that could ever happen to your Cubbies,
Mojo. Because the way the Trib Co runs things, it's almost hopeless.
And it would be great to see one Baseball's most storied franchises
back on top.

Yeah, people bash him, but I'd love to have a Steinbrenner-type owner running the Cubs. He wouldn't stand for this Dusty Baker halfassed style of baseball for a second.

In other offseason Cubs moves, these are the hot rumors flying at the moment, courtesy of the best damn Cubs blog on the web, Bleed Cubbie Blue:

The Cubs have been offered Juan Pierre in trade from the Marlins. Florida wants Corey Patterson and Rich Hill in return, and the Cubs are hesitating because they don't want to give up Hill.
This is wrong thinking, in my mind. The Cubs need a leadoff man. Pierre fits the bill. Hill may become a decent major league pitcher, but in 2005 he looked overmatched. I'd do this deal.

The #1 position player free agent on whom Jim Hendry has his sights set is... and I know this will please many of you... Brian Giles.
Hummina hummina. Giles' power numbers were way down in 2005 (only 15 HR), but he did draw a huge number of walks (119) and hit 38 doubles. He'd hit way better away from Petco Park as his home field, and one thing he'd bring to the Cubs would be a hard-nosed attitude and some leadership, which the club sorely needs.

Pierre in CF, Giles in RF, Matt Murton in LF? Sounds pretty good to me.

Finally, the Cubs are looking seriously at the Orioles' B. J. Ryan as a setup man. This is a move I'd make, in a heartbeat. Ryan throws heat, strikes out a ton of people, doesn't give up walks or homers (only four in 2005 in 70 IP), and best of all for a guy who throws like this, isn't a headcase. Do it!

Good fucking God, do all of these deals NOW! Throw on Furcal at SS and move Nomar to 2nd and this team could kick some serious ass next year.

I would put zero stock in BJ Ryan going to set-up in Chicago. Close yes. But i don't think he would take a demotion to be a set-up guy unless it was with the Yankees who would offer him an ungodly amount to sign to be a set-up guy

Honestly why would BJ Ryan go with a losing team when he could do the same to stay with the orioles and get the same money the cubs would offer?

Which is also a strong possibility, since they have Dempster locked up for 3 years and could easily move him to be the setup man with BJ as the closer.

Or, BJ might be willing to make the switch, since he's been so vocal about his displeasure with the O's. Why wouldn't he accept a better deal if he's so unhappy about where he is? The Cubs have a ton of money to toss around for 2006.

I definetly see what you are saying, i just think that the Yankees will toss more money at him then everyone else. Plus his preference is to stay on the East Coast from all accounts i have seen.

I think a more likely scenario is Tom Gordon coming back to the Cubs

Well, free agency will start in about 3 weeks. Hopefully the Sox can go ahead and win the series ASAP, to help speed up the timeline.

Mojo, there were rumors swirling for the past year that Cuban was looking to buy the Pirates, but they got shot down eventually. I can't think of anything that would have made me happier. He really understands how to make money while keeping fans coming to the games. Kevin McClatchey seems to do as much as possible to keep fans out of PNC Park (and Three Rivers) since he bought the team. Hopefully they do well next year, and MccClatchey sells. Hopefully

Yeah, maybe Cuban wants to buy the Cubs so he can tear down that old
dump of a ballpark Wrigley and have them play in a Basball/Football

Just for the record, Mojo, I hate you and your All-Star hookup. I'm
sure there are a ton of people buying season tickets just to sell the
ASG seats, so I've been on the lookout for those for a while.
There is no way I'm buying season tickets, or even a mini plan until
this team starts winning. But if it is anything like '94, the ASG
should be a great time this summer.

You want to know why I like Bobby V? He always gets alot out of very
little talent. Its his specialty. His 99 Met team had no business being
in a pennant race, and 2000 he gets to the WS with less talent than
most of the teams he beat in the playoffs.

And in the Bronx, we have truckloads of talented guys and cant get past the (less talented) Angels.

He
was at Shea 8 years, which is a long time. But when he left, and
clueless Art Howe took over, people should have appreciated how good
Bobby V was.

Man, I'm hoping that the Braves do somehow re-sign Furcal so the Cubs can't blow their money on him. All the areas that need fixing and he keeps coming up at SS...screw that. Re-sign Nomar on the cheap and have Ronny Cedeno there on the bench to supersub. The Cubs need to find a serious leadoff hitter (yeah, I know Furcal was for the Braves, but he's real streaky and his defense has typically stunk), a CFer (likely to plug the leadoff hitter problem if they're smart here) and RFer, and at least one lights out reliever to strengthen up the bullpen...another quality starter would be nice, too. But I'd look at ALL of those beofre trying to fill SS.

That doesn't surprise me. When you say you want some of your boss's
authority, it may well lead to some bad blood between the two of you. I
was actually surprised to hear he WAS staying. Factor in he took
a pretty hard line with the team, thats the kind of thing you do when
you have another job waiting. Or else you'd be crazy to walk away from

lined up, though. And I think he's smart enough to make sure he lands

I just read the Shaughnessy column that apparently
pissed Epstein off so much. It is so completely absolutely pathetic the
way the Boston Front Office shits on everyone who leaves. It was so
similar to some of the garbage coming out when Pedro left, when Nomar
left, when Clemens left. It's one thing that hasn't changed under new
ownership. I know Shaughnessy thought Epstein was staying, but still,
you cross the front office in Boston and any semblance of ethics and
confidentiality goes out the window. Epstein gave them exactly what
they deserved, what they've had coming.
one of my fathers good buddies Joe Maddon, the current Angles bench coach, is being considered for the head job at Tampa Bay and I'm so torn on how to feel. I'm so happy that he's being considered, but coaching Tampa Bay is like coaching a team of 9 year old retarded girls, they're just not gonna go anywhere, and it could ruin his chances at getting a future managing job.

I think Omar V. just won his 10th in a row as well. The voting for these awards tend to favor past winners. I takes a long time for great defensive younger players to get their name out there. Hudson from the Jays deserved one in 2004 more than Wells. Yet, he wasn't a household name, not the Wells is, but he's much closer.

I read in the Post today that the Mets are considering seriously
pursuing A.J. Burnett. Im really psyched about the free agent market
this year and the players that the Mets are looking at. Burnett,
Wagner/Hoffman/Ryan, Molina/Hernandez/Jojima (supposedly the hottest
Japanese player on the market...i.e. Kaz Matsui), Furcal. Theyre also
continuing talks with the Sox about Manny and might possibly go after
Konerko or Aubrey Huff. I guess Im still not used to the Mets actually
getting getting players that might actually help the team with the
Steve Phillips/Jim Duquette era fresh in mind.

Cubs tell Garciaparra to seek better fit elsewhere

General manager Jim Hendry told the paper he talked to Arn Tellem, Garciaparra's agent, last week.

"Nomar
is a guy we all feel terrible about," Hendry told the paper. "He really
worked hard to come back [from a severe groin injury] and play at all.
He swung the bat well late.

"Unfortunately, he has had a lot of
injuries that weren't necessarily his fault. We have kept the door open

Yeah, but hey, December 7th is a long ways away and a lot of things could happen. The Cubs are just being smart given Nomar's injury problems and are giving him free reign to seek out the best deal possible. Ultimately, they could still end up striking a deal over the next 3 weeks...not likely, but this isn't closing the door. Personally, I'd have no problem for him coming back for a 1 year $4-6 million incentive deal that'll cover any time he'll spend hurt. If the Cubs pick up Furcal, move Nomar over to 2nd. If he goes down, the Cubs potentially have Cedeno and Neifi Perez to back him up...or, those guys can step up and cover 2nd and Nomar can cover 3rd if Aramis Ramirez goes down again (a likely scenario). In the end, I'm happy if Nomar goes or stays.

In other news...

Numbers point to Lee as NL MVP

Stats-minded voters will overlook value of Andruw Jones, Pujols

The writer clearly favors Jones, and honestly, I think Pujols deserves it more, but I'm not gonna lie and say Lee wining this won't make me squeal like a dandy fancylad.

Jones desrved it. He
CARRIED his fucking team all year. Pugols LEAD THE LEAGUE in errors by
a 1b (32?) Andrew Jones is probably the best defensive CF in the game,
and CF is a key defensive position, First base isn't, and Pugols still
fucked it up. Its not just the #'s its Most Valuable player. Pugols had
a slightly better offensive year, but he plays on a great hitting team.

Jones didn't have to "save the Braves all year by himself." For the bulk of the year he had guys ahead of him, veterans and rookies who could get on base. He has no control over that. He lucked out having skilled guys in the lineup who could get on the bases before he belted one out, moreso than Lee and even Pujols on the Cards. How does that make JONES the better player? Lee himself generated more runs and statistically won more games for the Cubs himself than Jones did for the Braves. I was already complaining about this elsewhere...

There is absolutely no way that Andruw Jones was anything close to the MVP. Lee was on base -70- times more often in 20 more PA's. Lee's on base percentage was 60 points higher. For comparison, Neifi was well within 60 points of Andruw's OBP. Andruw hit 19 HRs with men on. 32 when empty. Lee had 15... but Andruw had 60 more at bats. Andruw his .207 with runners in scoring position, with an OPS of .721. Lee hit .331 with a 1.113 OPS. Andruw hit more home runs, but Lee created more runs by not only hitting better with men on base but being on base more often to be driven in.

Andruw gets bonus points for being more valuable defensively, but not enough so to make up for the fact that Lee created far more runs, therefore led to the Cubs winning more games than Andruw led the Braves to.

The media glorifies Andruw more than he deserves to be because of the fact that he was the only recognizable face on the Braves who was healthy and good the whole season. They're giving him credit for the rookies who filled in for those who were hurt, and for the better-than-usual seasons that the middle infield had.

I'm not going to argue against Albert Pujols, he was similar in value to Lee. But Jones, while having a good year, was not even in the same neighborhood as Lee.

Oh, sorry, I didn't even mention the fact that Lee had an 85 point advantage in Slugging percentage, coming from 26 more doubles.

Jones had a great year...I just look at the MVP as the award for the best (non-pitcher) player of the year. And maybe that's wrong. I think there needs to be an award comparable to the Cy Young, which is based mostly on the overall numbers, and the MVP isn't it with its vague "good team=good player/bad team, punish good player" mentality.

Maybe Jones does deserve the MVP category based on that kind of thinking...then there needs to be something that recognizes the hard numbers that shows how phenomenal Lee and Pujols were overall as players, because breaking it down like that Jones isn't even in the running outside of His HR's and RBI's.

I AM saying it's ridiculous to argue like they can be one of the sole factors over dozens of other stats when someone is an MVP. How can the potential MVP control how many people get on base ahead of him? To use Lee as an example, you're essentially saying he's being penalized for being on a shitty team and having a shitty lineup made by a shitty manager, DESPITE hitting better overall than anyone in BOTH leagues. That's asinine. Lee really is the best example of singelhandedly doing all that is humanly possible for one man to do as a baseball player and still getting the shaft just because he's on a crappy team. Despite what people say about Jones (because he obviously didn't. Let's stop talking like the Braves had only medicore or horrible players to go with when all the injuries wnet down. They didn't), one man really can't win a season for a team all by himself. Why is one player's achievment belittled or shunned just because other people he has NO control over aren't up to snuff?

And you're really chalking Lee's performance this last season up to "luck?" And just because he plays at Wrigley? If you're really gonna push THAT horseshit argument, why doesn't the MVP come out of Colorado or Houston every goddamn year? And AGAIN, I'm not saying Lee should have won the MVP! But saying he isn't MVP-worthy is absurd. I fucking loathe the Cardinals and I have no problem respecting Pujols for the player he is.

So how did Jones " luck out " in his lineup ?

He was " lucky " to have 10 rookies in the lineup at some point with him ?

And " lucky " because those guys were major league hitters ?

He should be less considered for the MVP because his manager doesnt suck ?

Jones should be punished because he has players in front of him ( Furcal and Giles ) that can hit ?

That is ridiculous.

The Braves did indeed as a team "luck out" with most of the rookies they had to call up to deal for the injured vets. It's a HUGE gamble whenever a team has to call up rookies in a situation like that to replace seasoned, all-star caliber players, as the Braves had to do. Is that such a crazy thing to say? I think even most Braves fans would agree with me. Look, the Cubs lucked out when they had to plug Matt Murton into LF towards the end of the year and the guy ended up hovering around .330 with some serious power. Luck factors HUGE when tossing a rookie into the game during the season.

And yes, you could possibly chalk RBI's up to luck in that they're based on how good the guy(s) ahead of you are. Look how many hits, extra base hits and HR's Lee had total. Lack of RBI's doesn't reflect on those numbers...it reflects on the guys ahead of him and how THEY can't get on base. Lee was belting hits left and right that should have been driving in at least 100 RBI's this year, but now it's his fault Dusty Baker's parade of losers can't hit the damn ball? Why should that be such a crowning stat for OR against a potential MVP when it rests so heavily in the performance of other people who are NOT the MVP candidate? Of course, it's a big stat. But people are chalking it up there like they somehow "prove" Jones should have been the MVP. It relies too heavily on other players to be the make or break stat.

Jones does deserve the MVP category based on that kind of

is. They're called Gold Gloves, Batting Crowns, Lead Lead in
HR's/RBI's. And if you do them all its a Triple Crown. There are plenty
of individual awards, thats the whole point of the MVP award. That you
have to put a little thought into it and look at who meant the most to
his team. Any dope can read stats, the MVP is for the player who did
the most to contrbute to his teams success.

And
Jim B, I agree wholeheartedly with you. RBI's are one of the MOST
important stats, it tells you how "clutch" a ballplayer is. Even more
important than HR's. The only factor that would mitigate RBI's is
if you're on a team like the Yanks or Red Sox the past few years, where
they both had huge team OBP's. If you have a ton more opportunities,
you'll obviously have more.

And the fact that Pugols was on a
great hitting team to me diminshes to some degree his RBI total, when
compared to Jones, who had no protection in that lineup.

And Jim B, I agree wholeheartedly with you. RBI's are one of the MOST important stats, it tells you how "clutch" a ballplayer is.

Or you could just go with a hitter's average with RISP, or to stretch it even further, with runners on the bases, period. A clutch ball player has to hit the ball, period. Lee was possibly the best hitter in all of the MLB. In his case, you really can argue that the ONLY reason he had less RBI's than Jones is because the various 1-2 lineups ahead of him over the course of the season couldn't get on base consistently. He can't magically create RBI's when they don't have a chance to exist in the first place. How much more clutch does a guy have to be if he's hitting above, at or just under .350 the entire goddamn year? Again, how is this ANYTHING except a player being punished for the performance of his teammates?

And of course RBI's are important. But parading them around like they're THE stat for the MVP just shows how little basis there is behind arguing that Jones should have gotten it. Take away the RBI's and the HR's, what is there?

And BDC, all the awards you listed aren't an equivalent to the Cy Young. My point is there should be an equivalent award for non-pitchers, and there isn't.

In the end I think it's hilarious we're arguing over two guys who won't ever be anywhere near the MVP again for the rest of their careers.

left-handed power. The Astros — Abreu's original team — would be
another possible partner if they could somehow find a way to absorb the

would make sense.

In a perfect world, the Phillies
would prefer to trade pricey veteran Jim Thome rather than Rookie of

that Howard remains unproven against left-handed pitching. Howard
batted .148 against left-handers last season, with one homer in 61

"I think there needs to be an award comparable to the Cy Young, which is based mostly on the overall numbers, and the MVP isn't it with its vague "good team=good player/bad team, punish good player" mentality." Obviously this formula doesn't hold true if the league views you as a huge commodity. See ARod and his MVP year in Texas. Hell, it even applies somewhat to Jones.

Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell will not be heading to the Rangers. Instead, the two popular Marlins are reportedly headed to the Boston Red Sox for prized shortstop prospect Hanley Ramirez, Minor League pitching prospect Anibel Sanchez and a Minor Leaguer

Word on the street is that Beckett has been beefing up over the last two years and isn't in very good shape anymore. This isn't as cut and dry as one might think.

Looks like the Mets made a big offer to Wagner and are very close to landing a trade for Delgado. That would make the Mets a true contender for the first time in a long long time. Think of the lineup if the land Molina at catcher as well. Hell, the lineup would be something like this:

1) Reyes SS

2) Matsui 2nd (they can't move this guy)

3) Beltran CF

4) Delgado 1st

5) Floyd RF

6) Wright 3rd

7) Molina C

8) Diaz RF ?? (May be part of the trade, but probably not)

They might end up batting Matsui 8th and insert Wright earlier in the lineup. I think that would be bettter, but I guess we'll have to wait and see if these moves actually come to fruition. If Wagner does sign, Hielman would be a very good setup man as well. And there are still rumors of Manny and Soriano out there, but they sure as hell can't sign them all. They're not the fucking Yanks, but they're getting closer.

As of right now, the Cubs and the Braves are the two frontrunners to signing Furcal, with most sports writers (scoff!) giving the nod to the Cubs. The Mets vocally pulled back on Furcal a week or so ago and pretty much said they were out unless he started asking for less.

I'm not huge on Furcal, but if the Cubs get him AND pull off their other big rumored trade at the moment, Juan Pierre from the Marlins, I'll be sold. Having Pierre hit leadoff, Furcal 2nd and then Lee and Aramis Ramirez hitting 3 and 4? Or Aramis at 5 if they can pick up a big hitting outfielder for RF? Pardon me while I get my bib.

The Pierre thing becomes a LOT more likely with the Delgado trade, since it shows the Cubs can probably trade for him without losing too much...maybe just Corey Patterson (who the Marlins have inexplicably expressed interest in) and a couple of prospects.

So the word right now is the Cubs have Juan Pierre locked up sometime this holiday weekend for 3 prospects. As long as one of them isn't their top kid, Felix Pie, I'm cool with this. But Hendry needs to buckle down and HAS to get Furcal to make this work.

I like that he signed Scott Eyre and Bob Howry for the bullpen. Between them and Dempster and the few decent relievers that weeded through the crap last seaosn, the Cubs' pen suddenly looks decent. Too bad Hnedry didn't fix that before LAST season when he was supposed to.

The Yankees might have short-circuited themselves in trade talks. The first thing out of other GM's mouths in talks, no matter who it for, seems to be Cano and Wang, even for marginal players like Juan Pierre. And they've already said they ain't trading them. There was only one player on the market I would even think about trading them for, and that was Beckett, and I'm not even sure I'd give up both of them for him.

The truth is the Yanks don't have many holes. CF and bullpen is it. Other than that, it will be the same team as last year. I hope they don't go into the year with Crosby as the CF, the lineup can carry him easily, but it would be nice to have a CF that can do something offensively.

I just don't see the Yanks making moves for the sake of making moves this year. It's a thin market and most of the cream of the crop is already gone.

However, being that the Phils gave $22 million along with Thome to the White Sox, upping the price tag on Wagner might actually make the Mets the only team left who can afford him. In essence, the Blue Jays may have just delivered Wagner on a plate to Shea.

I told you my Jays were going to be quite involved in this year's free agent/trading sessions. The newer ownership sees the young potential starting to hit it's prime and realizes they need a few pieces in order to compete in the ultra competitive AL East. Here are a few more rumors Snoogans is sure to love.....

"News: The Blue Jays have joined the Royals, Pirates and Cubs in asking the Rangers about Kevin Mench.
Impact: Adrian Gonzalez is also receiving interest. In return for Mench, the Royals are reportedly willing to give up Jeremy Affeldt. The Blue Jays discussed Miguel Batista, Brandon League and Alex Rios with the Rangers.
Jesus Christ...and I thought the Cubs were overpaying. BJ Ryan is a great closer, but 5 years for a closer? Yowch...more than 3 years for a closer always strikes me as pretty risky. But hey, if it works out, more power to 'em. The Jays have a solid bullpen all around.

I'm crossing my fingers and lighting candles hoping the Cubs pull both Furcal and Juan Pierre. The latter is supposedly locked up for 3 prospects, and reports say the only real thing keeping Furcal off the Cubs is if the Braves can shell out 50 million for 5 years. I'm not huge on either guy on their own, but together with Pierre at leadoff and Furcal hitting #2 ahead of guys like Derrick Lee, Aramis Ramirez and if they shell out for someone like Giles or swing a major trade like Abreu is positively dominating. A lineup like that would drive pitchers crazy.

Oh, and fuck Kevin Mench. I keep hearing his name tossed around, and if the Cubs pick him up I'll be furious. It's like trading Jeromy Burnitz for a younger Jeromy Burnitz. No thanks.

Just what I said. He's a younger, SLIGHTLY better version of the guy the Cubs just got rid of in RF. He should be a settled for option AFTER they've exhausted trying to go for big OF dogs like Manny, Damon, Abreu or Giles.

Actually, 2/3 years he did in fact shut down the few game he got a chance to close. His problem in that role was that he didn't strike that many people out for being such a hard thrower. In fact, his velocity bit him in the ass a lot of times due to control issues (walks and hit batters in key situations), and giving up the long ball. The kid came back for TJ surgery with about 5-7 MPH added to his fastball and it may have hurt him in the long run. Sure it put his fastball over 100mph every now and then, but he never got full control of it. I think he signed with the A's and had another super year only to falter in the playoffs. Since then he had come back to the Jays and failed to make the team. Great point though, thanks for the correction. He had the potential to be great in those years if he gained a little better control at key times, and the Jays got him more oppurtunities.

OK, the prose in this article is a bit much, but it's from a Cubs' scouting page, so it's a given...still, if it's even remotely true...WOW...

ITI has learned from a source close to the Cubs that free agent shortstop Raphael Furcal and the Cubs have all but finalized a deal that will bring the shortstop to Chicago for the next five years, with a mutual option for a sixth year. The source told ITI that the deal could pay Furcal as much as $100 million including the sixth year and "significant performance bonuses" that included winning a batting title, the stolen base title, and a bonus if he plays in 150 games for each of the first three years of his contract.

The news that Furcal was coming to the North Side would have easily been enough, but our source also had one more juicy bit of info.

The Cubs might make one more deal that could give them arguably the greatest infield in the history of baseball.

The rumor goes that the Cubs are close to finalizing a seven player deal with the Texas Rangers that would bring Alfonso Soriano and Kevin Mench to the Cubs in exchange for Jerome Williams, Todd Walker, and three minor leaguers, one of whom is believed to be right hander David Aardsma, and another shortstop Ronny Cedeno. According to our source the two clubs have agreed on which players would be dealt, but what is holding it up is exactly what kind of deal Soriano will want in Chicago.

He would likely command a deal similar to Furcal's, and while his addition would solidify the infield, and first four spots in the batting order, there are questions about whether or not the Cubs would be willing to shell out a pair of $100 deals in two weeks to two players.

Still, if Jim Hendry were to pull this off, the Cubs would, once again, become the favorite to win the NL Central, and probably the World Series. With the addition of Bobby Howry and Scott Eyre, the bullpen appears to be shored up, and if the Cubs were able to sign Furcal and land Soriano, suddenly Felix Pie, even rushed, in center field doesn't look so bad, since he would likely be hitting eighth, with little to no pressure to produce.

The Cubs lineup, even with Pie and fellow youngster Matt Murton in it, would almost certainly be one of the most feared in the NL. Furcal, Soriano, Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, Mench, Murton, Barrett and Pie.

Be afraid, be very afraid. The only obvious weakness would appear to be the lack of a left handed bat in the middle of the order, but a quality, older, cheaper, left handed hitting corner outfielder could provide that at least some of the time, and it might not matter. Yes, the starting pitching will remain in question as long as perennially injured Kerry Wood is still penciled into the rotation, and the trading of Williams would nix one of the top options for temp duty during Wood's inevitable time on the shelf, but the opportunity to assemble a lineup like this comes rarely (unless you're the Yankees).

The 100 million for Furcal is a bit absurd, but if it locks him up as part of THAT lineup, hey, go for it.

This is truly becoming the year of overpaid contracts. Perhaps this will finally enable MLB to see it needs to take a true stand on salaries as the NHL recently did, bc ticket prices are already crazy and obviously headed to Clare territory. Something's got to give in the next few years. At least Furcal and Ryan are key players, but the Eyre getting what he did is just another level of nuts.

i agree with you spoon on furcal maybe but ryan has only been a closer for one season and previous to that he was just in the bullpen. he doesn't deserve that much money for one good season as a closer.

spoon

Ryan was meant to close. He is coming off three great years in Baltimore in terms of ERA, Strike Outs to Walk Ratio, Hits per inning among other stats. Also, being that he's a lefty closer, it helps that the setup man will usually be a righty. Meaning the AL managers dealing with Ryan in the ninth may have already depleted its bench in order to matchup earlier in the game bc the Jays will probably have at least one or two other lefties in the pen for matchups. In fact, the Jays bullpen matured greatly last year, and this move has the potential to be huge. It also always has the chance to blow up in their faces, but I'm just happy they're making a fucking effort again. It's just nice to see them in play for a few of these FAs, let alone get one this big and this early. The Jay haven't been this active in about a decade or longer. The ghost of Gord Ash is finally gone.

i'm not saying its not worth the risk especially since other than wagner there's no other closers on the market but 5 yrs is a lot to give a guy who has only been a closer for one season and you don't know if by the end of the contract that he'll still be as effective as he was last year but i can agree with your point on them finally being active in the market.

A deal like that would destroy the FA market for the next few years. The Cubs would lose Lee, Ramirez, Prior and Zambrano when it came time to resign...no way $100 million is legit...up to $60 million, but anything above that is retarded.

Wow, that's a Yankee deal if I've ever seen one. That deal screams "we know this isn't smart, but if we win a title, no one will care." It's when you don't win one that this deal will look awful. Or when lil' Billy finally throws out his arm for good, like scout have been saying he would do his whole career.

Compound that with the Pedro deal that will start to look silly if he doesn't have two more years just as good as last year & the Mets could be digging themselves out of a pretty deep whole.

Mets are rumored to be trading Kris Benson to Baltimore for Jorge Julio

Keyword there in that post is rumor. I dont see the Mets trading Benson as he is a lot better pitcher than Zambrano and getting rid of good young pitching talent should have of stopped with Kazmir (Side note-In MVP Baseball 2005 I traded to get Kazmir back), but won't. Now while many say that the Mets signing Pedro to a long term deal is silly, I say that the Mets are doing a sort of rebuilding. They are competing with the Yankees for big stars, but those who legitmatly compete and contribute to the team. While they get the fans back to the seats with stars, they give their minor league teams a chance to develop. The Wilpons are taking this team balls to the wall to the future with the launching of their own network for the Mets and a privately financed stadium in the next three years. The Mets are seriously committed, for now, to building a ballclub. There perhaps has not been this much build up of the Metropolitans since Mrs. Payson's days of the 1960's.

The 2005 Mets overachieved, but will be better with the improved bullpen and the loss of Graves (thank fucking God!!) They also have a lot of money to spend with the loss of Piazza and Cameron as well as the shedding of salary from Cedeno and Stanton. This is a club that is doing some good retooling, unlike that fucking disastrous retooling of Steve Phillips in 2002. These Mets will be a fun team to watch in the next few years.

Yeah, I was tracking that all night...fucking WEAK. Anyone who tells you that wasn't all about the money is lying...who in their right mind wants to go and play for the Dodgers right now? The only benefit to Furcal with this deal is that potentially he can get ANOTHER huge deal after three years, as long as he's still healthy and hasn't totally fallen off.

Part of me is like "good riddance"...the Cubs would've had to pay at least $13 million a year for this guy, and that's ridiculous. But at the same time, he would solved a TON of problems that really set them back last year, and in 2004.

At this point, Hendry needs to buckle down and start making some serious trades...the Dodgers'll need to cut payroll, so make an easy deal for Bradley. Trade WHATEVER it takes to pick up Abreu if he's really tradeable. Pay BIG money for Damon, as long as he's willing to go for 5 years or less...this talk of 7 years for the Caveman is asinine and shouldn't be tolerated. Focus on the outfield and lock that the fuck up. And, make nice with Nomar and sign him back for a year to play SS.

GODDAMMIT.

Here's the latest rumors from ESPN Insider

*>Dec 4 - The New York Times reports that the Mets are in "very serious" discussions with the Marlins about acquiring catcher Paul Lo Duca.
A source told the New York Post that the Marlins would receive a minor-league prospect in return for Lo Duca, 33, who will make $6.25 million in 2006. Lo Duca, a three-time All-Star, hit .283 with six home runs and 57 RBI in 2005.

The Marlins' catcher, who attended Arizona State, has said he would be interested in playing for the D-Backs. But the Palm Beach Post says he has also drawn interest from Colorado and San Diego.

Dec 4 - According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the Cubs are focusing on acquiring Juan Pierre from the Marlins and trading center fielder Corey Patterson.

Talks with the Marlins about Pierre will be one of the Cubs' primary focuses at the winter meetings, the Sun-Times reports.

Don't be surprised if Pierre fills the Yankees' center field void. According to The New York Post, the Marlins have asked for lefty Sean Henn and right-handed reliever Scott Proctor for Pierre, and the Yankees didn't reject the offer.

What makes Pierre attractive is that it's likely a one-year deal, since Pierre can become a free agent after the season and the 2007 class of free-agent center fielders will include Andruw Jones, Torii Hunter and Mike Cameron.

Dec 4 - According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Sunday, the Cardinals are waiting to see if AJ Burnett -- who grew up a Cardinals fan -- will decide to accept the team's four-year offer worth around $40 million.

Derek Braunecker, Burnett's agent, said Saturday his client "could have a decision within 48 hours," meaning by Monday afternoon, Peter Gammons reports. Sources told the Post-Dispatch that Burnett is prepared to accept the Cardinals' offer if they could guarantee him a fifth season.

Dec 4 - The Boston Herald reported that Johnny Damon, his wife Michelle and agent Scott Boras met with Red Sox president Larry Lucchino over the weekend in Boston, but no deal was imminent.

The Sox offered Damon a three-year, $28 million contract last month, but Boras is seeking a seven-year deal worth around $12 million a season for his client, the Herald reported.

Dec 3 - According to the Boston Globe, the Rangers contacted the Red Sox on Friday and were willing to dangle second baseman Alfonso Soriano in a deal for Manny Ramirez.

The Mets and Angels are still considered at the top of the list for Ramirez, the Hartford Courant reported. Jed Hoyer, Red Sox assistant to the general manager, said Ramirez has received strong interest from five teams and inquiries from more than a dozen. The Mets have reportedly shown the most interest, while the Angels also figure to be a trade possibility

Dec 3 - According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Rangers are focusing on Barry Zito and have called the A's. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Rangers are offering outfielder Kevin Mench so far.

Other teams believed to be suitors for the former Cy Young winner are the Mets, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, Phillies and Blue Jays.
* />

The Mets will send 19-year-old right-hander Gabriel
Hernandez and another minor league pitcher to be named, the Daily News
reported.

Hernandez was 6-1 with a 2.43 ERA for Class-A
Hagerstown of the South Atlantic League, then went 2-5 with a 5.74 ERA
for Class-A St. Lucie of the Florida State League. He had a combined
131 strikeouts in 135 innings.

One decent A ball pitcher is a steal for LoDuca. Only
concern is he's 33, which is when catchers usually start to run out of
gas.

I was under the impression that the YANKS offered Henn and
Proctor for Pierre. If thats what the Marlins want, it's a steal and
the Yanks are hopefully closing the deal. He's not perfect, but at that
price you cant pass him up.

quote:
Now, GAME ON!!! Who gets Tejada?!?

The obvious answer is
The Red Sox, they trade Manny for him. Only trouble is Manny hasn't
said its a team he'll go to (He's a 10/5 guy) and nobody thinks he'll
be traded in the division. Especially with the unbalanced schedule.

Tejada's
contract isn't nuts. He signed for 6 years/72 mil two years ago, when
the free agent market tanked. And he's only 29. He's clearly one of the
best hitters in Baseball. Since is not a situation where the team HAS
to trade him (like AZ has to trade Vasquez) I'll guess nothing
happens.

Its a pretty safe guess. Ichiro's unhappy, Carl
Pavano's unhappy, Manny's been unhappy for the past 3 years. I bet none
of them gets dealt before spring training.

"We
had an internal discussion," Sox CEO and president Larry Lucchino told

Hendricks brothers know we were open to discuss Roger's return if he
should have interest in the Red Sox in 2006

Nice
gesture, but as a Yankee fan, I dont mind at all. I dont think he can
do in the AL what he could in the NL. He was running out of gas in his

the NL. And there are more pitchers parks in the NL. I think he'll get
pounded if he comes back, especially in Fenway. Good luck.

Sorry Mojo (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2256260)

Miguel Tejada doesn't want a trade after all.

Three days after telling The Associated Press that he wanted "a change of scenery," the Baltimore Orioles' All-Star shortstop backed off those comments during a phone interview Sunday with Comcast SportsNet.

"I
never said I wanted to be traded," Tejada told SportsNet. "I said I
want to see a better team. I don't want to keep losing like we have the
past two years."

matt morris signs with san fran

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5161952

I think that the cubs might have a shot in the central, with the couple moves they've made and cards losing morris, walker might retire, and i just don't believe that they have a great team, they just played in a shitty division with the pittiful pirates and reds, and .500 brew crew, and a cubs team that got killed by injuries.

Him staying with the O's has been the most likely option, but all of this doesn't happen for no reason. The Cubs should still try and sell the idea of their farm options for Tejada if the O's wanna get serious about rebuilding. If no go, they need to toss those prospects after Abreu.

I'm sure Uncle Miltie will just be thrilled, wherever he is.

Here's something interesting from ESPN.com about Clemens

Or he could reenact The Life and Times of Nolan Ryan and hightail it across the state to Arlington

You know, there is another team in Texas, one that REALLY could use some pitching.

Looks like Mojo's Black Sox are going to be there come playoff time as they aren't going the way of Florida after winning. Not to mention their division is pretty weak. We'll see if the Thome trade actually hurts them in the end. I know it had a lot to do with getting Konerko back, but you can see by the market/league right now that even decent center fielders are at a premium.
