View Full Version : Moving My iTunes Library to Another Computer

This week I got me a new fangled computer system. Here's my dilemma, on my old system I had iTunes and my iPod connected and a vast MP3 library. Now before I changed over to the new system I moved my mp3 library from my old computer to an external hard drive that I have. So the entire library is there. Now I just want to install the ipod and iTunes on the new system - though I want to do it in a way that I won't have to reinstall all the songs on my iPod. I just can't figure out a good way to do it and I don't want to try and do it until I have a good plan in place. Any ideas on how I can get this to work smoothly?

If it's a new computer everything will have to be
copied onto the iPod again. Every iPod is locked to a specific
computer. Once the iPod notices your new computer, it won't accept any
new files unless the library (on the iPod) is erased. So everything will have to be
copied over to the iPod again, there's nothing you can do about that.
You can leave the iPod as is for now, but once you want to put
something else onto it you'll have to recopy everything.

I've done it with the windows version of iTunes:

Load iTunes onto the new PC (I think it would be best to make sure it's the same version on both PCs, so make sure you have iTunes 6.0 on both)

Once you've loaded iTunes and opened it up one time (click "Agree" to the user agreement) close iTunes and then copy the contents of the iTunes folder (probably something like C:Documents and SettingsSKWMy DocumentsMy MusiciTunes) iTunes Music Library.xml, iTunes Library.itl, and the iTunes Music folder will be replaced with the versions from the old PC.

Open up iTunes again and you should have all your songs on your new PC. Connect the iPod and you should be good to go. This will work best if you have the PC's networked together so that you can just copy the entire folder's contents directly from one PC to the newer one.

I've done this a few times and it worked perfectly.

It worked!

What I did was create a partition with the same drive letter F:/ as the old setup had it.
I moved all the music to that drive and then installed the iPod software and iTunes. Everything
loaded properly.

The only problem I seem to have now is this, and it's not a big deal, but if there's a setting I need to put in to get it to work it would be great. What it is, is that with my old system if I put the iPod in the dock iTunes would update the iPod and then it would automatically display the checkmark that the iPod is up to date and ready to be taken out of the dock. With the way it is now it updates the iPod, though it stays in the "do not disconnect" status until I push a button in iTunes to eject it. It's a little annoying, and I've been trying to figure out how to adjust the setting but I can't it. If anyone knows how to fix it.

When the iPod is docked click on the little iPod icon on the bottom right side of iTunes.

If "Enable Disk Mode" is checked you need to uncheck it. I'm pretty sure this is what you are talking about. It doesn't always work correctly on my PC (It usually will tell me it's Okay to disconnect, but sometimes it stays with "Do not disconnect" even when finished syncing)

SKW, that's gotta be it. I saw the enable disk mode was checked but wasn't sure if I should uncheck it. I'll give it a try when I get home. Thanks.

the process of restoring your iPod and then reinstalling the software, and music takes all but 20 minutes. suck it up. if you really dont want to do that get yourself the Dell DJ something or other. its a bit of a downgrade from the iPod but its much more user friendly. and its not Computer Specific. i can upload MP3's from my computer, then go ahead and steal some from you, and your neighbor...granted you use the (much more user friendly) MusicMatch. im sorry if i sound to much like a commercial
