Apparently the Right Wing blogs are going crazy over this.  I even heard Rush Limbaugh discussing it and the "obvious left wing media bias".  My question is: what was USA Today thinking?  What were they trying to accomplish? Mojo's right, who really takes USA Today seriously?  The nickname that paper's had for years was "McNews".  It's basically a newspaper for people who can't be bothered with reading a real newspaper.I kind of feel bad for Condi.  She's essentially the most powerful black woman on the entire planet (possibly in all of hisotry), and she has to deal with someone doing a bad photoshop of her in a poor excuse for a newspaper.

All pie chart jokes aside (they are awefully nice to look at), you're both right. USA Today is worthless. You can't even line a birdcage with it (all the color ink would be bad for the bird). I also love the nickname "McNews". What's the one paper you see every morning in a McDonald's restaurant?All newspapers in general are far worse than they used to be, but I can't name a single instance of USA Today ever "breaking a story".

It's a national publication.  The paper sucks ass, we all know.  Regardless, it's something that mocks the left (unintentionally) in a way they can't or won't understand.

Does it?  Newspapers have touched up photos since they were able to print them.  If you look up until the digital age, you'll see photos blatantly "fixed" with paint, pencil or ink.  Computers just made it more subtle, but photos are retouched before publication more often than not.  Why can't this just be the work of a shitty graphics guy, as it probably is given the paper it came from?

Mojo, come on.  I'm on neither side seriously.  You really put that in the same category of the photos you speak of?  I'm not being sarcastic when I ask you for ANY example that is of this caliber of manipulation regarding such a figure.  I'm refering to such a subtle (yet telling) jab.  It's just adolescent.

Damn... another good point. Even Matthew Brady (or his assistants who actually took the photos) posed dead bodies on the Gettysburg battlefield, to make "his" photographs more poignant. The same can be said for television news. Cokie Roberts (then of ABC) posed in front of a photo of the Whitehouse (or was it the Capitol Building?) for a live broadcast, and tried to pass it off as her actually being there.

I think we just have to disagree here.  It's clear to me what the guy was trying to tweek on the photo.  The resolution around her eyes is fuzzy and not as sharp as the rest of the picture.  He or she did a crap job.  If it's supposed to be insulting, they did an even crappier job at that than just trying to clean it up for publication online.But really, you've never seen old newspapers from most of the 20th century where they've obviously "sharpened" a photo with pencil or ink?

Uh, OK.  It's really not that scandalous or unusual.  It's exactly what I'm talking about...touching up a photo so it's more clear, usually making sure something is defined sharply enough.  I'm not sure where to look online, but I'll try...<img height="604" src="http://www.20thonline.com/LotSheets/EPS/images/00237.jpg" width="396" border="0" />(Look at the shadows and the outlines in the bottom pic.  That's what I'm talking about.  Very common practice in the 20th century up until the 60's or so)That's not the "whiz-bang" example I'd like to find, but that's really exactly what I'm talking about.  They have plenty of books the reproduce the front pages of major newspapers for all of the 20th century.  Just open one up and flip through the first 50 years...it really is obvious what I'm talking about.  The Rice photo is just a 21st century of this, but done poorly.I mean, look, in the end that's just my opinion.  Take this however you want, it's clear we disagree.  I don't see proof proving either of us definitvely right here.  And yes, some people do use the media as outlets for their slams at other people this way.  I just don't view this as one of them.<img src="http://scripts.cgispy.com/image.cgi?u=TheMojoPin" border="0" /> Dancing with the women at the bar... << He knows his Claret from his Beaujolais >> "You can tell some lies about the good times we've had, but I've kissed your mother twice...and now I'm working on your dad..."

"Propaganda?"  It's a photojournalist's shot in Ethiopia in 1935.  Here's what it said on the site where I found it:Five 6 1/2" by 8 1/2" real photos of the Ethiopian military, as they prepared for war against the Italians, taken in late 1935 by a International News Photos, Inc. photographer. One photo has note explaining the photos. These are the original photos, some of which were professionally touched up prior to printing in a newspaper or magazine.That's exactly what I've been talking about!  Newspapers retouch photos before publishing them, period.  That's all I've been saying.  It wouldn't make a difference what the person in the photo does for a job...if the photo is deemed to need retouching, it gets retouched.I don't know how to find more of this on the web right now.  It was sheer luck that I found this one, but it perfectly demonstrates what I've said I've seen in newspapers from the first half of the 20th century...news photos touched up with ink, paint or pencil.  Now they do it digitally.  That's all I'm trying to say!  Again, crack open any collection of newspaper front pages over the last 100 years and you'll see it all over the place.  It's a common practice, and it's just my opinion the Rice photo is just a really poor job of it.

Is it really any wonder why conservatives are up in arms about a brightness/contrast issue? It's because their president lacks brightness and their conduct is in contrast to their self-richeous proclaimations. They're freaked out by who's currently floating at the top of that bowl, and they don't have to worry about the democrats since they've been flushed long ago. Like my metaphors. I stink.
