View Full Version : Are Gel Inserts Unhealthy For Your Feet?

I love the way these gel inserts feel on my feet. I change them every few months with no problems. Recently I have been smelling this AWFUL odor in my shoes, on my feet, socks, and everywhere those things are. Now for the record, my feet dont smell like roses but I know what a normal foot smell is and what a foul chemical smell is. I have determined that after months of heavy use, something happens to these gel inserts and they begin to emit a FOUL chemical like odor. Can these chemicals seep into the bloodstream though sweaty feet? I have found nothing about this on the web but YOU MAY HAVE HEARD IT HERE FIRST. ARE THESE INSERTS POISONING US? WHAT ARE THE CHEMICALS IN THESE GEL INSERTS? They sure ruined a good pair of Perry Ellis!!!

The shoes still smell even after you change the Gels?

They're RUINED. They really smell BAD. They're in the garbage and they even stink up my garbage full of garlic salsa and blunts.AWFUL!Mind you it's been a few months since I changed them but I'm worried more about the chemicals than the smell now...Maybe I can wash the shoes ehh...na I just went into the garbage to sniff the shoes and they're done. Yeeech! Sounds like you got a bad package of inserts and they were leaking.  I've used gel inserts on and off for years and never noticed a chemical odor.

I had awful foot pain and my podiatrist told me that the gel inserts
may feel good at first, but arent really helpful, because they don't
give you an arch..He sent me to a little pharmacy to buy these $16
dollar inserts in a plastic bag, and they literally saved my life..I've
recommended them to at least 5 people at work (UPS) and they swear by
them, even though they've worn the custom made $300 orthotics..It's all
about the arch support in the middle of your foot.

Sounds like you got a bad package of inserts and they were leaking.  I've used gel inserts on and off for years and never noticed a chemical odor I have used gels for year with no ill effect. I have many sets of gels in various shoes so I will have to start doing my own personal stink experiment. Believe me you, if you get a bad batch like this you will know it!

what the fuck cheap shits are you buying? I have the gellin' ones and
its a solid gel. You can cut it with scissors. And they dont seem to
smell at all and i have em in every pair of shoes

Its a fungus that is the result of the humidity and the lack of airflow between the bottom of the gel insert and the footbed of the shoes.  Fungus needs warmth, darkness and moisture to grow.  The fungus is what your smelling and I found out the hard way when I use to wear them things.  Just toss the shoes and wear merino wool socks and get a new pair of shoes and stop buying the gel inserts.  A good pairof shoes and the merino wool socks and your feet will be healthy.  I had these nice boots that I loved that got ruined by them gel inserts!<img height="533" src="http://www.fungi.com/info/infopics/lifecycle/lifecycle.gif" width="504" border="0" />
