I work for one of the best bosses ever. He's cool, he's level headed, he compliments me when I do a good job, and he gives me shit when I deserve it, and makes sure that I get the hook up when I ask for it.

Also key is that he defends me when I fuck up.

His birthday is coming up, and I wonder - is it too much of an ass-kiss move to get him a birthday present out of respect?

Nothing huge, but a polo shirt of his favorite NFL team... or something.

How long have you been working for him? The longer you've worked there, the more appropriate the gift is.

I think with how you described your relationship with your boss that it is a great idea. It does show respect and appreciation for your boss without making you look like an ass kisser

I think its a bad move. Christmas is coming up soon, much more
appropriate. A little too personal, especially if you're the only one
who does it. Comes across sort of with a gay vibe.

If you really want to do something, get
Hockey/Basketball/Football tix and invite him to go. Say "My treat, its
your birthday that week, right?"
If you do decide to get a gift try for something that is thoughtful but not overly expensive. Definitely do not get tickets inviting your boss to attend a game or any event with you.

I suggest you give him a card, stating you have made a donation in his name, to the Human Fund.

J/K... Send him a nice card (in the mail... I always think it's nicer to get a card in the mail), and write something nice and sincere in it. If he has a good sense of humor, and was a Seinfeld fan, you might actually want to include the "Human Fund" thing.

I'd go for the original idea with the polo shirt thing. Doesn't seem gay to me, and you've known him long enough.

Unless he's a Mormon or a 12-stepper, I reccomend a decent bottle of booze. A bottle of single malt scotch is a nice guy gift, unlike the manly man gift that Tall James is uncomfortably recommending.

Tenbats, your idea is fine, nothing gay about it. If your boss is cool, why not be the same back? I have an awful boss right now, so I envy your position. This after having the best boss of my life. Tough transition I must say, bc this one is a micromanaging nightmare. This ones all over the place and fucks up all the time. Some days, I get the same message on audix four times. Twice in the morning when she hits send twice. In the middle of the day again out of nowhere. And finally at the end of the day saying that she can't remember if she passed this on yet, so take a listen and respond appropriately. She does the same fucking thing with email even though she can check. She's a fucking mess. Oh and trying to take direction from this one is impossible. It's incoherent and all over the place, like this post.

You touched my hand I could touch the sky
I lost my faith, you gave it back to me
I had your love I had it all
I'm grateful for each day you gave me
Maybe I don't know that much
But I know this much is true
I was blessed because I was loved by you

i think getting something for your boss, is a nice idea. especially if he has been very supportive. i have to go out and buy my boss a gift today. he was very supportive and helpful during my pregnancy and maternity leave. Plus tuesday is his 30th anniversary with the company, so it won't look like i'm trying to kiss ass too much.

I think an nfl polo shirt is a guy enough gift, since it's sports
related. Otherwise, the alcohol or cigar gifts (although you may
want to avoid cigars unless you know he smokes) are good alternatives.

Personally,
I'd wait the extra month, give him something around holiday time and
thank him for everything he's done for you this year.

Usually, I prefer to give my boss a gift which is totally
re-giftable. For example, sometimes, I get a boss a nice bottle
of liquor. This gift is great, because either he drinks it, or he
can use it as a quick gift for that brother-in-law, to help smooth over
the fact that he slept with his wife.

Ties and
clothing, eh, too personal. Sports stuff, eh, sports stuff is sorta
dumb, I mean, you're either getting him a mug, or some plaque with a
trading card encased in plexiglass and mounted on a piece of MDF, or a
book. I give that stuff to children, not bosses. Fancy
baskets, eh, it's like straight out of A Christmas Story, besides,
clients give businesses baskets, not employees to bosses.

I
like to get bosses excutive gifts, gifts which sort of add to the
mystique of the business environment, it's either that or liquor.
Side gifts such as tins of popcorn are good for the office.
