Boy, yeah!  You guys are really showing all the people here that want to model America on the French system of government(?)!Seriously though, the idea that these riots somehow "prove" government programs to combat poverty ANYWHERE in the world can't work is the height of absurdity.  Please, PLEASE tell me that's not what the two of you are trying to get across...you both seem infinitely smarter than that.I mean, where to begin?  First of all, you're relying on the hoary old chestnut of thinking that people here actually want an overtly and fully socialist government, which is laughable.  People wanting government programs to assist certain segments of the population does not suddenly leap to "OMG!!1!!!  SOCIALIZT!!1!1111!1."  Secondly, doesn't this just show that the French system of government in this area is flawed?  How does that even begin to apply to how we run things over here?<img src="http://scripts.cgispy.com/image.cgi?u=TheMojoPin" border="0" /> Dancing with the women at the bar... << He knows his Claret from his Beaujolais >> "You can tell some lies about the good times we've had, but I've kissed your mother twice...and now I'm working on your dad..."

You act as if you've never had a "root cause" discussion with
anyone. I find those arguments to be at best useless. At worst its
excuse making, which simply prolongs bad outcomes. Look, we've
had out fair share of riots here. I just dont want anyone to lecture us
on how they've evolved past this shit. They haven't.

I hate to break it to you. But when Reagan was president the total
Government share of the economy (State+Local+Federal) was around
26-28%. Its now around 42%. When we hit 50% (or thereabouts) were
officially a socialist country. Most economists define Socialist states
as those at or above 50%. In NYC where I live, it already is over 50%. So
its not an opinion, or about what the desires of the people creating
bigger government want. Its just a matter of simple #s. Read Forbes
once in a while.

True economic socialism is government control of the economy through the means of production and distribution of goods.  To be a "socialist" country, there is no such thing as private property, period.  Are you honestly saying that that magic "50%" actually applies to the federal government controling more than 50% of the means of production and distribution of goods AND private property in the country?

I am only enjoying this because the French are so willing to point fingers at everyone else. Its nice to see them get bit on the ass for a change. There is also some satisfaction in watching government ministers bicker while Paris burns.Just a shame that it is real lives and real pain.... by the way I don't buy the poverty thing. Just like our riots after Katrina I believe this stuff is rooted in racism. You can have all the government programs in the world, but if someone can't get a job because of race nothing else you do matters. Lastly you can't force your "Ideals and Values" onto groups of people. The model for French "integration" has been to make everyone "French" in body and soul...ignore all differences...legislate away religous and cultural observances... just not going to happen.

that explains your reaction to what we said. We're operating on
different definitions. What you just described is what I'd call
Communism, not Socialism. Socialism is a mix of public and private
sector, what makes it socialist is the amount. I know there are many
definitions of "socialism", I think mine is the more modern one. France
is a socialist country. They have private industry. Its just regulated

 No. First of
all, its state, local and federal. Its all government, its all taxes.
If you make money in the private sector and the government taxes it (be
it state local or federal) They control that money, not you. So its
effectively the same as Socialism, if it reaches a certain level
(obviously there will always be some taxes and Gov't). So if it taxes
or fines or fees 50% of your earnings, they control that 50%, not you.
So if you dont get to spend your money, whats the point of making it in
the first place? Why bother? To a Libertarian or Conservative
Republican more taxes=less freedom.  But dont worry, nobody (outside the Cato institute) in Washington actually believes any of this anymore.    <blockquote />

I think that these riots are more about racism then about poverty.  They were triggered by the death of two black kids who hid from police in a power station and were electricuted.  The kids thought that they were being chased but were not.Anway, can i call the rioters "the french ticklers?"

Be careful, I hear he has a posse.I think that these riots are more about racism then about poverty.  They were triggered by the death of two black kids who hid from police in a power station and were electricuted.  The kids thought that they were being chased but were not.Even if the issue is about race relations, which some people think, and some people disagree, AFAIK there was little to no arson in the civil rights movement, except churches, by whites...
