Of course in addition to sending Fez all the get well wishes that
are posted in the get well thread, we'd like to send Fez a lil get well
gift.  Since flowers were discouraged and food is probably a bad
idea right now, we'll send Fez some things to help kill time.What
would you guys think would make good gifts?  If you're going to
say things like music, books, dvds, etc., try to include some
titles.  It's easy to say let's send a book, movie, or tv series
box set, but let's get a little more specific if we can.

There are a lot of good boxed DVD sets of classic TV shows (Dick Van Dyke, the Munsters, Honeymooners) that he might like as long as he doesn't already have them! I think he mentioned having the Andy Griffith one already.

Good ideas so far.  I'll clear out my paypal account and accept
the donations there, if people want to donate.  We will also be
using some of the RonFez.Net advertising money for this purchase
(see?  We use that money for more than giving away Roady2's!)The
purchase will probably be made from Amazon.com (or some other retailer
that will ship directly to him), and we'll make sure it includes a gift
receipt in case whatever we purchase is something he already owns.

Also, we should make something home-made like a big banner or something that we sign. Maybe we could schedule a night where we could meet in the city. I think the DVDs and books and stuff are cool, but an even better
present--one that will not only let Fezzie know that everybody loves
him and wants him to be well, but will actually help him acheive that
goal, would be some good exercise videos, equipment, low-cal, low-fat
and low-sugar recipie books, a gym membership--anything to promote a
healthy lifestyle that will help get his heart stronger. What do yout think?

we should all tape our own radio shows and send them to fez to keep him entertained, like he would do for us if we were sick. i am sure the would be equal in quality and content.  i like the DVD idea's. maybe someone who knows fez on a more personal level would have some more precise idea's.  If i had to come up with something it be to maybe Tivo some shows he likes that he may be missing now, then burn them to dvd for him

I see a problem with buying Fez a membership to a GYM... When you get memberships as a gift, if you don't go, you feel like you haven't lost anything because you never paid for it. Personal training sessions or personal diet/trainer is a better idea in my mind.  This
is going to be a long, tough struggle for Fez. Having a person as a
motivational figure in his life would be a big help. Just telling him
to go to a gym or buying him diet books(When he has made it clear that
he doesn't cook) might not be the best idea. He needs a regimen.

I agree with Rich.  Having someone to workout or exercise with is the best motivation around, period, be they friend, family or personal trainer.  Something about having another person there to support you or, if necessary, scream at you to get your fat ass moving is something hard to ignore and helps push you to new levels of fitness.

My other issue with a gym membership is trying to find a gym near him
that he'd want to go to.  We don't know exactly where he lives,
just a general area, and don't know what gyms are local to him. 
As for gym equipment, we also don't know that he has room for a large
piece of equipment like that.

I know what gyms are close to Fezzie as I live in the same general area, but I agree that a gym membership may not be good, because he may not have the incentive to go without a trainer.

My grandfather passed away recently and he also had diabetes. We are in the process of going through all his stuff right now and he has tons of books on diabetes and healthy living. I would love to pass them along to Fez if he'd want them. Whatta ya think? And where would I send them? to the studio?edit: Missy..that gift basket kicks ass. I'll split it with you if you wanna do something like that. perhaps, in addition to a gift, people could start a sort of Earth 2 friday night lights deal. instead of people getting together to eat unhealthy food and drink alcohol, maybe fez could be involved a weekend walk/jog/run (3-4 miles) in central park. people could meet fez somewhere and then do the walk with him to help with the motivation. this might work better than any gym membership or home gym (not that im saying those are bad ideas- id be great if fez could do those as well.)

Anything I can contribute artistically, let me know. The banner is a
really nice idea. Even through a Digital Image it doesn't cost that
much to get something bannerized at Kinko's and then get it signed with
a mass amount of Sharpies.The gift basket is also a really cool
thing Missy. I will contribute to the fund Jon has set up to help get
this or whatever else for Fez to help him through and get him back to
100%.It is times like this when one of our own is hurting that I really love the BIG heart this community has.

this weekend based on funds.  But as of now, I'm thinking of a
split.  Part of it into a nice, healthy basket to help him with
his conditions (as per missy's post) and do the rest in books and dvds
to help him pass time while he convalesces.  After 2 days, we've
already collected $235, so there's enough to go with multiple ideas.

I know this wouldn't be a fun gift but Ronny mentioned Fezzie doesn't like to check his blood sugar  because of the finger pricking. maybe we spring for one of those painless blood testers. Some of them are supposed to work well. If we are still short, I'd be happy to kick in a little more.

I think the blood glucose checker and shoes are great ideas. these are personal items, so someone should probably check with ron or fez before getting them. maybe the doctor has suggested a way for fez to check his sugar already.

as for the shoes, i would highly recommend New Balance. THey are generally the preferred shoes for runners.

No Nike sneakers, they are not wide enough, and i think fez has mentioned he has wide feet. New Balance and Asics are supposed to be good for that.  i like the bloodless glucose idea, but i would think they are expensive, and i am sure he would get one through his insurance. if not, i think it would be great

i like the bloodless glucose idea, but i would think they are expensive, and i am sure he would get one through his insurance. if not, i think it would be greatThe new meters are not exactly bloodless, but they use a tiny tiny drop of blood to get a result.  I have to look into whether or now I can give one away for free with the strips too.  We have a billion of them here, but the FDA has some pretty strict regulations on what we can give away for free.  I'm going to ask the marketing person in charge of the newest meter today.I'm not diabetic, but I tried one of the older meters on myself, it was not that bad.  That one you had to get the blood from your finger, but with the new meters, you can use alternate site testing and get blood from your forearm, leg, etc.I should know by the end of the day whether or not I can snag a free meter and strips

perhaps, in addition to a gift, people could start a sort of Earth 2
friday night lights deal. instead of people getting together to eat
unhealthy food and drink alcohol, maybe fez could be involved a weekend
walk/jog/run (3-4 miles) in central park. people could meet fez
somewhere and then do the walk with him to help with the motivation.
this might work better than any gym membership or home gym (not that im
saying those are bad ideas- id be great if fez could do those as well.) Count me in if we put somthing like that together.
