This is gonna sound crazy but, let me just throw this out there:

NOBODY REALLY LIKES THESE F'CKING HARRY POTTER MOVIES.

Because of my wifes job, we had to see the last movie and this new episode more than once. And lemme tell ya.... KIDS SIMPLY DON'T LIKE THEM. They shuffle around in their seats the whole time, they talk the whole time, they take naps, they get up to pee a few times, sometimes they are just looking down at the floor and swinging their feet. And this was happening at multiple screenings in multiple theatres/cities.

My wife and I (and the Warner Bros rep) noticed it last time and we noticed it again this time. The kids come out it record numbers to see these movies but, they just don't commit to liking them. They see the movie just so they can say they've seen it...or something like that.

It reminds me of the Cabbage Patch Doll craze 20 years ago. Kids reeeeally wanted them. They begged for them but, once they got one...they didn't really play with it. They just wanted to have one.

And the adults aren't really engrossed either. Not the majority anyway. I assume that many of them are there because they are with their kids.

Yes, there are SOME young adults that really dig on these movies but, not enough to fuel the craze. It's very strange. Maybe the real mania is in Europe or somethin'.

(I know you're being sarcastic but...yeah, I already mentioned that the kids turn out in record numbers....)

WB is very much aware of this "faux fan" thing that kids are displaying

Of course WB will continue to make the movies but, the fact that kids don't REEEALLY get engrossed definitely does concern them. After the screenings...it was, pretty much, all we talked about.

Do they gross 300 million? Yes. But it COULD'VE been 600 million or more.

Pretty good movie for the people who have read the books and/or seen the rest of the films. They were smart and got rid of any scenes that were redundant with the earlier movies (Harry fighting that mean kid, Harry being annoyed by his mean relatives, Harry practicing magic), and with the exception of over explaining why Harry is so damn important, they left out any cliff-noting of the back story and other characters to get those not in the know up to speed, and went right to the meat of the story. They even had some time to actually do a lil bit of character development, and ordinary stuff that should remind everyone how much it sucks being 14.

This is the year of the dark "kids" movies. This year we saw the first ever PG-13 versions of "Harry Potter" and "Star Wars" films; the "Batman" films are usually that rating, but this year it seemed particularly kid un-friendly. And while "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was both PG and more tied in with the books, it seemed very adult and very dark.

I'd rather have hope in my soul than soap in my hole...

I was disappointed

They left out some important stuff that while someone who read the books would know, but non readers wouldn't. They left out how Barty Jr escaped from Azkaban. They left out why Harry and Voldemort's wands countered each other, and why cedric and harry's parents showed up (they did mention the term, but not why).

You're
nitpicking. Those really aren't important details. Does
anyone care how he escaped? No, the important piece of info is
that he did. They've implied that Harry and Voldy counter each
other, and it extended to the wands. As for the ghosts, it
doesn't really matter how they came back, just that they did to protect
Harry.

I thought the movie was excellent.
Focused on the important story details while adding in enough
characterization to get a feel for who they were if you hadn't seen the
previous movies. Also, I really like the way they played Hermione
and Ron off each other, especially at the end of the ball.

Mad Eye was great, if a touch and I mean just a touch - one RCH - overplayed. Voldemort was perfect. That's all I was seriously worried about. The rest was basically gravy, although I guess I'm not 100% sold on this version of Dumbledore - a little too unsure, aggressive and shouty for my taste. I would've preferred that he didn't get too crazy until blowing through Moody's door at the end. But, eh, minor nitpicks. Would've liked to have seen more Krum; Hermione a little less emotional all the fucking time.

In comparison to Prisoner of Azkaban, not as good a film, but a better translation of the book. Does that make sense? i finally saw this yesterday and thought it was a horrible adaptation of the book. It hardly followed the book, it basically used it as an outline and then added the bulk in. Hardly anything about the Quidditch world cup or the move krum uses during the tournament and then harry does the same thing during the tri-wizard tourney. Not to mention that the Dragon scene with Harry is completely way off from the book. Then the part in the lake Doby is the one who gives Harry the gillyweed, and what happened with Hermoine talking about SPEW??? That was never mentioned at all. Then Voldemort giving Harry the Love speech which is completely BS because Dumbledore is the one who does it. Yes i know I am nitpicking but I dont care. They took scenes out but yet were able to add scenes to the movie that arent even in the book. Oh yes and left out the funniest part of the book where Ron asks Krum for his autograph. Also they never show the Rita skeeter story line and how Hermoine captures her because this is very important in the coming books. I felt it was horrible and worse one out of the movies so far, this director was horrible. Yea also didnt explain the Mad-Eye moody thing at all didnt even show him out of the hole. Horrible.
ENOUGH with the people who dismiss film adaptations solely based on the fact that content was re-written, taken out of context or misused entirely. It's called dramatic license. There is no way you can do a word-for-word lift from the text. It would be impossible and bad filmmaking. Some things only work on paper. If you've done any kind of screenplay writing you'd realize that. It's literally impossible to pull off everything written down on paper unless you have some foreknowledge of how it is going to be accomplished on film. Moreover, its EXPENSIVE to include every scene in the book. Everytime you have a new scene you add millions to the cost of the film. I haven't read Goblet of Fire, hell I haven't read any of the Potter books, but I appreciate the films on their artistic merits and translating an imaginary world into a tangible reality.

I hear this shit all the time from LOTR fans. Enough already. The combined works of Tolkien are longer than the Bible. The problem with fans of sci-fi and fantasy literature is they can never let go of the text and just enjoy the films, for the simple reason that the text in most cases is more rich in substance. No shit. You create the imagery in your head. Most of the time the film never meets your expectations, but if you honestly think the Potter films and the LOTR films don't even hold a candle to the original work than there's just no arguing with you.

Same goes for the comic book adapts...bah humbug. Spiderman's web shooters. Sabertooth not knowing Wolverine. Story exclusions from Sin City. I think people just want to complain at this point.

Exclusions are not a bad thing. Bad storytelling is a bad thing. See Dungeons and Dragons to see what I'm talking about.

One only hopes Narnia delivers.

It comes down to the movie being a more visual medium. Taking the dragon out of the arena looks cooler than keeping it confined, especially since it's a "aerial battle." Honestly, I read the books years ago and didn't remember exactly how the fight went.
I mean, technically I hear Snape smacking the boys in the back of the head was not in the book. The director added it b/c he wanted to reflec the subtle brutality of english schools. Yes it wasn't in the book, but let's not kid ourselves and say it wasn't a particularly thrilling scene which didn't take away from the plot and only enhanced the drama of what I imagine without the dogfight to be a rather mundane scene.

As for Harry not sharing his winnings and other relevant passages applicable to future book storylines, there's plenty of ways around that. Either write around it or show a flashback.

You also have to understand while those scenes had meaning in later books, you probably didn't even give them a second thought until that a-ha moment came along that made it relevant to THAT story.

It made my heart sing.

Sucks. Just an awful movie that changes the director every other movie.
The first two were moderately annoying at best and the third is just as
asinine as this last one. I was dragged along on it on the
pretense that I would also be going to Suncoast. You couldn't pay me to
see another movie or read another one of the books. If I see one more
kid in a Harry Potter costume, I'm gonna smash his head with a cinder

Harry was too young but since the Goblet of Fire's word is wizard law, he is part of it.

So why did they involve the other young wizard's in the second task, having them be underwater and almost die if not saved in time?
