View Full Version : I wanted to hate Ron and Fez, but...

I've been a huge Opie and Anthony fan since the WNEW days, and I always knew Ron and Fez were friends of the show, but I never listened to them. I was extremely happy to have Opie and Anthony on all day with XM, so when they announced that Ron and Fez were moving over to 202 I was none too excited. I wanted to hate them and expected to hate them, and I pretty much ignored them until a week or two ago when I finally heard little bits of their show, but nothing really got me hooked. Then when I heard Opie cautioning the R&F fans to tune in for big news, I checked these boards and found out what happened, then downloaded a few clips. I listened to the "worst accidental pain" bit and I thought it was really funny- the kind of stuff that O and A often talk about that everyone can relate to even if it seems really simple and stupid. So I've been listening more and more and I have to say that the show is great and I no longer want them to get fired or brutally murdered. It's a nice contrast to see how short-fused Opie and Anthony and the wackback fans are compared to Ron and Fez and their fans- like hot wings and blue cheese, a nice compliment for each other. I just wanted to say that the show is very cool and I'll probably spend some time over on these forums.

This kind of thread makes up for all the people who sign on and diss Ron and Fez.

This is the natural progression I believe. The 2 shows are similar, but different enough to exist on their own. But people who like one will almost always like the other. People will ALWAYS have a favorite, but you can enjoy them both.

Kinda like how I've grown tolerant of O&A, and even laughed hard a couple times, but overall I still don't call myself a fan.
I mean when Don and Mike were on WNEW, I REALLY WANTED to like them. I gave them 2 chances and ended up hating them, but I went in with a positive attitude. I figured they were on the same station as O&A and Ron and Fez so if I liked Don and Mike I'd have a full day of programing to enjoy.

Why would someone look to hate a show that's sharing the channel with O&A? And also, with the way O&A usually treat other shows, wouldn't you trust their judgement for at least a quick check in with the boys? O&A aren't going to endanger their deal with XM for show they think sucks or that they don't get along with.

I have no room for that in my ears so I turn it off. NOBODY has EVER done that to me before. Congratulations! I doubt Ron & Fez could EVER offend me.

Oh Yeah, then there was the time that Howard Stern backed down to that fight with O&A and that offended me knowing that my Radio Hero was really a great big phoney. It also offends me that Howard isn't funny anymore either. That may not be his fault though. He's just really old & out of touch. I still want to hate him though...

It's not so much that I WANTED to hate them, I really just expected to hate their show because Opie and Anthony, until recently, were the only talk show that I ever liked, and the fact that Ron and Fez were "stealing" a few hours away from Opie and Anthony during the day really annoyed me, so I was just being a closed-minded angry OnA listener.

It took me almost a week to get hooked on R&F.I'll say right out
that Fez sounded gay,but only later did I listen closer and figure it
out that it was a long-running bit.Afterwhile Don& Mike paled in
comparison ,for my head.I ghostwrote for Stern midway in his career,so
I have a quaint and quimsome sense of humor.I appeciate high witicism
and low fart jokes.Riffing is what R&F do.It's not just shock humor
or punch lines.A point of view, with backing by good info or strong
opinion is what draws me in.I'll listen to Rush or Gallagher if it
means they stimulate me with anger and disgust me.Know the enema.
The bits on R&F do a long, slow burn while O&A bash stuff with mallets, metaphorically speaking. I love the contrast. They're very different, and yet the branch of comedy is the same so it all works.

I too was VERY concerned when XM decided to insert non-O&A stuff into Channel 202, but now I absolutely see the wisdom of it, and enjoy R&F immensely. I am a HUGE fan of R&F...it may be the most oddly entertaining show in the history of radio. It's so different from anything else out there (other than the fact it's two guys ratchet-jawing for 3 hours) that I still can't put my finger on it. But I love it!

blah blah blah enough of my blathering

--steve

I was in the same boat. I was never in an area to hear Ron and Fez, and once they announced that they'd be on 202 I was scared it would take away from my O&A replay catch-up.

Now, I can not get enough of them. I don't care quite so much when I miss O&A, but missing R&F is the formula for a bad day now. Which is shocking to me... because I'm a hardcore fan.

My brother's a big O&A army guy... I sold him and my mother on Ron and Fez. My mother loves her Fezzy.

Hi ya'll.

I have to throw my chips in with Kaiser here. I was pretty
indifferent to RnF to the point of wondering why O&A even brought
them on but this past week I've had a chance to listen a bit more and
am really starting to enjoy the guys. Ron has a great deadpan style and
Fez....well Fez is just a big lovable dufus, how can anyone not like him ?

Lastly, ya'll seem much more friendly than the psychotics over at a certain unamed fan forum.

Another good contrast is how forgiving Ron and Fez are with their callers. Opie and Anthony car crash 4/5 of their callers, but when people call up Ron and Fez and they're not exactly radio gold, Ron just kind of goes silent and then goes with the caller and tries to salvage their call. On the one hand, it's great to watch OnA focus their misdirected anger on their callers, but on the other hand Ron and Fez's style has a nice flow to it, and the car crash gets old after a while. But like I said, they're good compliments, and getting the best of both worlds is pretty sweet.

I'm happy to see a few people starting to dig ROn and Fez for the 1st time. Most here like O&A too, but our favorite is Ron and Fez. There's absolutly no reason we all can't enjoy both shows.

Hell, I wish there were more cool radio shows to add on. I wish Howard was still funny so I could switch to him of O&A are torturing some poor young woman all morning again. But he's not funny, so I stick with O&A.

2 great show that sound great together: O&A and R&F!

i have never heard of ron& fez until xm so i didn't really know what to expect so far i really enjoy the show alot i think that it's not really fair to compare them to o&a since they do a totally different show one doesnt have to be considered better than the other, they both are equally good in their own right but i think one thing we can all agree on is that 1. we miss fezzie and 2. harry suxxx
