So I've been feeling pretty crappy every day for a while now, itchy throat, stuffed up, fatigued, itchy etc etc, so I went and got allergy testing done. What a pain in the ass that was, I basically got pricked with 50 tiny needles. Anyway... I'm allergic to Trees, Mold, Dust Mites, Dogs, Cockaroaches (GROSS!), Ragweed and the most severe (drumroll please)

CATS

For those of you that don't know, I'm well on my way to crazy cat lady land. I have 3 cats in a 2 bedroom apartment that like to sleep next to my head on the pillow every night. Apparently I've been allergic to them allll this time (maybe why I'm so tired all the time). Well, I'm not getting rid of the cats, and I plan on always having cats, so the doctor has suggested allergy shots for EVERYTHING.

Has anyone had this done, and did you have success? It is at least a six year committment, with weekly shots for the first 6 months. Zyrtec, Claritan and all that crap are not working.

I had this done A LONG time ago as a kid. They gave me a lot of shots as you said. I found out I was allergic to Ragweed, fresh cut grass and other things like that.

We couldn't afford monthly treatment, so I don't have any experience with that end. But yea, whatever you have to do is worth it to keep your pets.

Why in God's name would you willingly keep something in your home that can easily be gotten rid of that forces you to REGUARLY BE INJECTED WITH MEDICATION. WITH NEEDLES. IN YOUR BODY.

Pet people are friggin' insane. I'll never understand it.

And seriously, I'm not trying to be a dick, I really can't get that mentality. If cats make your allergies even worse, and they're bad enough to make you have to get allergy shots, I dunno...I'd opt to clean my place out of whatever was causing me to be poked with needles. Health uber alles!

When I was around 8 or 9 years old, my family had a dog named Spirit. I loved him very much. After we had him for a year or so, I was informed we'd have to get rid of him because my mom was allergic to him. I was devastated. I cried for days. Suddenly, my parents changed their minds, and said we'd keep him.

I found out a few years later, that my dad had to give my mom an allergy shot every day, so we could keep him. We had Spirit until I was 21. My parents waited until I went to boot camp, to have him put to sleep, because they knew I wouldn't be able to handle it. He was very old and very ill. I had a dream about Spirit the same night they had him put to sleep. I still have dreams about him. I call them my Spirit Dreams.

I bitch about my dad quite often, but damn... I had good parents. I'm not allergic to my son's dog, but I'd get the shots if I had to.

Believe it or not
Mojo, I felt the same way in my early 20's. And then I adopted a
Bulldog named Jake who changed me (I think for the better).

And
Missy, get in the habit of dusting and vacuuming your place at least
once a week. If you have any carpeting, get rid of it. Should help
alot.

Do I even need to tell you that they cant sleep on your head anymore? I know its cute, but they cant.

missy, i've had allergy shots. when you start going, its once
a week - every week. they actually inject you with some kind of
stuff that has whatever it is you are allergic to in it so it helps
build up an immunity of sorts. you have your own bottles of
injection stuff.

when you go get your shot the first week, they
only do a tiny bit, and over the course of the weeks, they increase the
amount. when that bottle is empty, you of course get a new
one. the new bottle has a stronger mix in it than the last
one. this keeps happening each week. eventually you only
have to go once every two weeks, then once every three, then finally
once a month.

they work wonders! i was getting them
when i still lived with my mom and dad. at the time they had
several cats and a dog. i was allergic to both and was on three
kinds of pills and an inhaler. once i started with the shots, all
i had to do was take a benadryl if i felt stuffy or anything like that.

there
is a down-side though. Besides the cost each week, which in a way can be
great because you can use it towards your medical expenses that can be
deducted on your taxes, you can be one of the few people that
once your shots get too strong you start reacting to them. i was
approaching my first year with the shots, and i started getting itchy
hives at the injection site, so i stopped going. out of all the
people i know who get the shots (which has to be close to 15), this
only happened to me, so i'm guessing it doesn't happen that much.

my allergies aren't anywhere near as bad as they used to be anymore. i hope this helps...

I started having to get allergy shots around 8 yrs old. And I was supposedly allergic to almost everything on the planet. All grass, pollen, weeds, animal hair, etc., and I also had asthma which was supposed to be triggered by any of the above plus many more i didn't. So i had to go to the doctor once a week a get my shots.

But previous to being diagnosed with allergies I never remember having any problems. Just one day we went to the doctor and he said you have allergies and need shots. I had 2 dogs which i had to give away because i was allergic to them but we had them since i was 3 so for 5 yrs we had them i was fine and all of sudden i was allergic to them. And all the time i went outside to play i was supposed to be on the verge of dying or having a major ashtma attack but I don't remember having any problems.

Anyway i had my shots until the age of 15 when i decided I didn't need them anymore. The reason was this, from ages 12-15 I used to go away to summer camp. the first 3 years i went away i didn't have any shots for the entire 2 months i was away. For some reason the last year my parents had the doctor make up shots for the summer so the nurse at the camp could give me the shots. That summer i had major allergy problems, got pink eye, and poison ivy ( i know anyone can get this but it just compounded everything).

So when i came home that summer i decided that the shots caused my problems and I was no longer going to the allergy doctor to get shots and i was going to save my parents a ton of money.

So i never went back and I haven't had any problems since and I am now 28. Now the only thing i think about now is

did i ever have allergies and my parents were fooled into getting them for me

or

did i build up an immunity over the 7 yrs i had them and didn't need them anymore.

to answer your question though

if the cats mean that much to you and it seems they do and you can afford the shots then i say you have to do whatever you can to keep the cats which bring you so much joy
