Marathons are in Kilometers as well. It's always a "10K race" not a "10 Mile race" (because 10K is shorter but still sounds good)

I always found it interesting that or money system is basically the metric system
but great britians money system seems so completely arbitrary

(although i've never had to use it so I could be wrong)

I think the answer is that too many companies use the inch/foot/gallon/mile measurements as a standard. Metric is good science and is easy to calculate, but we are too ingrained. When Europe went Metric, we should have too. Thomas Jefferson was a big proponant to it! I think that most of us would prefer to use units closer to the foot, because the meter is just too cumbersome and not relative to most body proportions. Personally, Id rather deal in 10's any day because it is simple to multiply and divide. But I am also too used to the foot, so Im sticking with what Im familar with.

Here is a good book, if your interested:

we use the metric system all the time. our electric bill is charged in kilowatt hours, our computers go from mega- to giga- to tera- bytes/FLOPS/Hz, our CDs and DVDs are 12 cm in diameter, our liquor bottles come in milliliters, the serving sizes on our food labels are all listed in grams. i don't know why the switch wasn't successful. sure, i'm a science geek, but is it really that big a deal to remember that 1 inch is 2.5 cm, 1 kilo is 2.2 lb, and a liter and a quart are nearly identical measures

What gets me is people in their early 20's who reffer to pints, fifths, quarts, and gallons of liquor, when they aren't even old enough to remember when liquor came in those sizes.

By the way...
