One of my co-workers went to the hospital early Thursday, because he was very sick and had terrible swelling of the legs. We found out today, he has necrotizing fasciitis (flesh eating disease), which started with an ingrown hair in his knee. The only way to treat this disease is with anti-biotics, and he's allergic to them all. Anti-biotic treatment would kill him.

The disease has progressed to the point that he's going to have to have a leg amputated. If they don't find another treatment, he won't make it. He's such a nice guy. It's tearing us up. The worse thing is, he's raising his 4 year old grandson, who can't stand to be away from him for more than a few hours. My co-worker's name is Mike, and he's only 43. If you're a spiritual person, please pray for him.

Makes our beer bet look pretty trivial huh? My girl is a nurse and this NF is no fucking joke. They take no chances with this thing and still it spreads throughout hospitals and many times they don't inform a single patient. It takes very little to get infected, as you can see by PB's post. So you could go in to have a mole removed from you wrist and catch NF eventually pressed with an amputation or die choice. Guidelines need to be reorganized around this topic. Very sorry to hear about this one PB. I wish him the best, but expect much less since amputation is the most effective treatment. Antibiotics just don't cut it with this condition more times then naught. Not good.

It's like a koala bear crapped a rainbow in my brain!

I've been reading up on this thing tonight. With the best treatment, the mortality rate is 20%. Without proper treatment, the rate is nearly 100%. Since Mike can't take the antibiotics, it's looking very bad. Damn. I hate this. I really like him.

I lived with an older guy in college who had a chest operation and
then ended up with NF (my roommate and I did enjoy his being out of the
house for two months though. ironically, he was obsessively clean).
They ended up cutting out a lot of muscle tissue.

Also, my dad
had to have some chunks removed for something called Mercer or MRSA, not sure which one. it's resistant to
most drugs. They think his started out as an ingrown hair as well.
