View Full Version : Kill Tookie OR Save Tookie

Big-time Hollywood stars, including Jamie Foxx, Snoop Dogg and Danny Glover, are leading a high-profile campaign to persuade another big-time Hollywood star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to save the life of a convicted murderer on California's death row named Stanley Tookie Williams.
He was convicted of the 1979 murders of four people in two separate robberies.
What does make him special, according to his supporters, is that he has been so lavishly repentant about the culture of violence he helped create.
Since about 10 years ago, Williams has been apologizing for his role in founding the Crips -- in recorded messages meant to be heard by youth groups, and in a series of children's books. A longtime supporter maintains a Web site where Williams, using the overly flowery language of a jailhouse autodidact, urges young people to stay away from gangs. True believers have even suggested him for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Tookie Williams is 51; his body has softened, his rage dissipated. The state of California will not be killing the same man it sentenced to death 24 years ago. But don't buy the argument that he's a special case, because he's not.

And the reason I disagree with the death penalty is that by dying, his suffering is over. He should suffer as much as the families of his victims who have to deal with their loss every day of their lives.

Stick this motherfucker in solitary. Take away his TV. Take away his weights.
first off, he's never admitted to the killings, so he can't "express remorse" for them

second, justice is not revenge (if an eye for an eye was such a good policy, we wouldn't have a penal system)

i'm
opposed to the death penalty for a number of reasons, but the fact of
the matter is: a) he's not going to kill again, and b) the work that
he's done has been much more of a deterrent to future crime than if he
had been executed 20 years ago. we gain nothing by killing him now
except revenge, and that should never be the primary motivation behind
any social policy

My point was Tookie has shown remorse for his crimes. Now you're getting specific to the murders that put him in jail. Considering this guy co-founded the Crips, I'd bet he killed more people in his heyday than just the four he was charged with, and who knows how many other horrid crimes he commit. It was a part of that gangster lifestyle that he no longer believes in and fights against from the confines of a jail cell, when he could just as easily sit around and not give a shit about his legacy.

Executing him 20+ years after the fact doesn't change what happened, and doesn't bring the dead back. Refer to my quote above from the Mahatma.

Letting him live would allow more chances for his powerful message of anti-gang violence to spread, particularly to future generations.

Isn't personal reformation the real point of jail sentences, regardless of how often it doesn't work?

I read some articles on Tookie and it sounds to me like he is worth more alive than dead. People who work with gangs say he has an impact. They say kids in gang-effected neighborhoods listen to him. He's not being dismissed as a sell-out. In those parts of the country, that's the way it works - the people who went through the life have the credibility to talk kids out of joining or staying in gangs. Some cracker-ass like me talking to them - I might as well be a sock puppet. But the founder of the Crips speaking and writing books against gangs - that's valuable in the real world of kids who might joing a gang.

What good could his execution possibly serve that outweighs the possiblility that keeping him alive could prevent more crimes? Revenge is little more than emotional masturbation if it doesn't serve the interests of past, present, and especially future victims.

Let him keep working from inside his prison cell. I think he's worth more alive than dead, and the people he might save would think so too if they knew it.

Keeping him alive in jail costs us more money than killing him. Imagine the familys knowing some of their tax money is keeping their loved ones killer alive, fed and housed for the rest of his life? If you knew you would die for killing someone, youd be more likely to not kill. Furthermore, if you were convicted of killing and knew you were on death row, wouldnt you try and say you reformed to keep yourself alive?

I have to disagree with the statement that he is worth more alive than dead because youths in gangs really listen to him.

I am sure they sit down and hear what he is saying, but I do not think it really makes an impact. It may for that day, or for a week, but eventually they will get back into the gang life. Its like when you go see a motivational speaker, or start a diet. You are all pumped up for a little, but it fades and you go back to the old lifestyle.

Those kids choose gangs becuase they have nothing and come from nothing. It is not "cool" where they are from to do well in school and try and make it out of the ghetto with education. The only way to get out is rapping, selling drugs or playing ball. Education is not even spoken about. My mom works with gang members in newark, and i have been around this type of stuff my whole life. They are animals. They kill inncocent people, they kill each other, and they kill themselves with the lifestyle they have choose to lead.

It is sad that most have such destiude home lives, but it is possible to overcome. If you just apply yourself to school, almost any innnercity kid can get a full scholarship to college and then have an out. I have seen people do it, but they are never put on the front page and they never make a rap CD to talk about it. What they do get is ostracised from the community for conforming to what society (i.. white people) have set out for them to do.

Gangs gives these kids a sense of family and community. This Tookie guy prayed on the weak minds of these children to turn them into killers. Fuck him and his stupid childrens books. He is second hand responsible for the murders of hundreds, and indirectly responsible for holding the people he organized down. He is not sorry, he loves this media attention and he loves to be in the news. He started a gang so people would love him, and once he was in jail and he did not have the street admiration like he once did he changed in order to get it from others.
First a statistic: The California death penalty system costs taxpayers more than
$114 million a year beyond the cost of simply keeping the convicts
locked up for life.

The death penalty is expensive because certainty isn't often a guarantee.

And
what is the point of killing people if it doesn't deter crime? Justice
is not revenge, nor is death punishment (I'm an atheist). I made the
comment earlier that he's not going to kill anyone because he'll be
behind bars for the rest of his life, and the odds are heavily against
it. Of the millions of Americans who spend time in prison, what
percentage of those murder someone while they're there?

The calls
for revenge and rapes and locking away and torturing prisoners, those
are great ideas. Except that only about 1 in 11 prisoners are lifers.
These people are leaving that environment and coming back into society.
But what the hell, let's just keep giving them $40,000 a year to do
nothing

I of course vote to not grant clemency. Clemency is reserved for when there is doubt in judicial proceedures during a capital murder case where the defendant is facing the death penalty. No mistakes were made, and all the judges, conservative and liberal have let the verdict and penalty stand. There is no doubt here, and this man is why there is a death penalty. His apology is hollow, he is "sorry" for forming the Crips and is working to stop children from being involved with gangs and criminal activity. All well and good, but at the same time raping fellow convicts in jail (Gangsta Fag?) and never admitting to or apologizing for the crimes he is convicted for and facing death for.

We are not killing a human being.

You're first point I don't agree with....The government is who the people elect and are accountable to us.

The jury who convicted Tookie to death IS the people, and they had every right to "jury nullification" if they chose to. They chose not to, and chose to agree with the law passed by those elected by the people.

Your second point may be one to ponder when considering clemency, and if there is a riot and the people of California turn against the death penalty, then the lawmakers of California have an obligation to eliminate the death penalty in California.

BTW, an apology to all I respond to.
since i am the only one i know of on this board with a close family member in a correctional facility i feel i can give some kind of perspective, first of all the reason why tookie won't admit thats he's sorry is because he doesnt want to admit guilt because then he would have no chance of clemency or appeal. he never admittted to doing it so let's take afar leap outside of reality and suppose the legal system has made errors. like perhaps the person who said Tookie was proud of the murders couldnt he be some guy the DA found who had something against tookie? lord knows no one has ever committed perjury after be being urged on by the DA. and im not saying that tookie is innocent im saying that just because he convicted does mean he is guilty and if we as a people sit idly by and accept every conviction unquestionably where does that leave us as a people?

i just want to add this. its an excerpt of a paper i wrote a couple years ago: This is perhaps even scarier than the assassinations themselves for this expediency of “justice” contradicts with the entire premise of our justice system, innocent until proven guilty… burden of proof is on the state, what do these cornerstones of out justice system really stand for? To me I see it like this, we as a people and as a nation would rather see a guilty man go free than see an innocent man go to jail

2) The results of Tookie dying could lead to the death of more innocent people if the people of LA start a riot over this.

Hmm, hours after his death and L.A. sure doesn't SEEM to be burning to the ground....

The guy on KFI's online stream was great last night, he was just about bursting a blood vessel, and for a good cause. He was on an O'Reilly style tirade, but going on about how the media has made Tookie a celebrity and because of that, and because of the Governor's delay, they'd made a situation out of nothing.

Then he went on about how this is the last possible situation where you'd even want clemency, but a bunch of fools have made it seem like it was worthwhile.

THEN he verbally bitchslapped Rita Cosby for "giving softball interviews for murderers."

The best part...the really great part....was when he was talking about the protesting crowd right in front of them and saying they don't have a clue. He interviewed people in the crowd and the pro-Tookie idiots couldn't even name one of the victims. And then the woman next to him just said "Oh good lord." LOL. He was bitching about them endlessly. I cackled with glee when he started busting on Jesse Jackson, who also can't name a single victim.

I'd like to shake the guy's hand. He had a tremendously great quote, about the 'save Tookie' folks: "They're arguements are completely intellectually bankrupt. You can't have forgiveness for a guy who doesn't have forgiveness for the people he's killed. If we can't put Tookie Williams to death, we can't put anyone to death."

Goddamn right. The adulation of Tookie was just fucking ridiculous. He's redeemed himself?! He felt a LITTLE bad (not bad enough to, say, apologize for his crimes, or give up some fellow Crips) about killing four people (and come on, it was probably more.) He wrote a couple of children's books with the aid of an author? That's enough to spare that shitstain's life? Christ, people. If JK fucking Rowling walked up to a gas station and executed a few people, should we let her off too?
