Answers.com defines and affair as...

A romantic and sexual relationship, sometimes one of brief duration, between two people who are not married to each other.

An affair doesn't have to be a cheating situation.

This old guy where I work talks about how he goes to an "affair". He says he wears a tux and his wife wears a gown. Most people I know do not go to these things, but I imagine they are like going to a wedding, but he says it is much classier and you feel elegant. It's not anything Im intersted in. Does this appeal to you?
