I had a slight argument with a woman in my office today. We set up apointments for customer service people to go to peoples homes. A customer calls up and says she had just called and set up an appointment, and the woman who had made the appointment told her "the earliest someone can come will be next Friday", and she made the appointment regardless. But the woman didnt want to have to wait a whole week and wanted to see if something could be done sooner. I looked at the appointment in the computer and saw that it was set for Friday (2 days from today) and told the woman, who was greatly relieved. I asked the woman who had set the appointment why she had told the woman NEXT Friday, when she had made the appointment for THIS Friday? She said "This Friday IS Next Friday"..... I said, "No, this Friday is THIS Friday, the following Friday is NEXT Friday!" But she said I was wrong. Am I?? What do YOU call the soonest arriving Friday?

you are 100% correct. in order for something to be next, you must have a current. in this case, friday Dec 9th is going to be the current and the 16th will be next. the 16 will be current on Dec 10th, then the 23 will become next.

the woman you work with is an idiot.

It's gonna be BAM, I crush his little skull and I sit down and smoke a cigar for another 55 seconds. The next kid comes in, BAM I put my cigar out on him. I laugh and point at the other kids "Who's next chubby?"

You are right, sr71. Make sure this woman gets fired for arguing
with the guy who keeps two leathermans and a hard cast in his cubicle.
Her argument is that it is the "next" Friday we are going to see... I told her, why even allow for the possibility that you could be misinterpreted, and say something like "This coming Friday", or "The following Friday"..

There really is no argument.

You win, she's a Moron.

Case dismissed! *bang*

Why don't you just use dates? Dec 9th or Dec 16th to avoid confusion?
so does that mean that it was "THE ORANGE BOWL OF FAILURE?"
