First:

I saw Chronicles of Narnia last night. It was amazing. A HUGE movie with lots of depth. Intense themes (overtly religious at times) and quite dark. One of, if not THE best fantasy movie I've ever seen.

Having said that, am I some type of weirdo because I've never EVER heard of The Chronicles of Narnia until the buzz for the movie started last month? I can honestly say that I have never heard OF it, or heard anyone talk ABOUT it until a few weeks ago.

In NYC (where I grew up) it was not part of the curriculum (sp?) so...I certainly didn't grow up reading the series and/or talking about it with my friends.

But also, I've never ever heard anyone even refer to it or even use it as a basis for comparison. (IE: "I hate all that Dungeons & Dragons and Chronicles of Narnia fantasy stuff"

My wife, who is from Canada, had to read the books in grade school. And an exgirlfriend of mine had to read them when she was growing up in Connecticut. It seems I am the only person who is out of the loop on this.

Am I alone here?

I read 'em when I was a kid on my own. I haven't read them since,
so I'm only vaguely familiar with the plot. I liked them plenty
back then, so I'm looking forward to the movie for nostalgic reasons.
They were required reading for me also ( I think there were 9 books all together). Each book is short, and when read as a whole, make for an excellent story

Trust me, it won't hurt.

Woo.

I went to bed early last night and did no drinking at all so I could wake up bright and early today and go to the first showing of the day at 9:50am.

I guess I should go get dressed and head on out. I suppose I will return in a few hours and make mention of it. But yeah, excited.

I, for one, was impressed at the story and visual effects. I think this movie might be a LITTLE too hard on small children but kids who are over 10 will find this movie amazing.

I feel like every fantasy movie that comes down the line will be compared to Lord of the Rings. Which is difficult to top. I do not think Chronicals of Narnia is better then Return of the King, but it certainly comes very close.

The woman who played the White Witch reminded of Galadriel from Lord of the Rings (Kate Blanchette[?] ) But she played the part to a T. She WAS badass.

The visual effects (THANK YOU GEORGE LUCAS ONCE AGAIN FOR ILM!!!) were nothing short of outstanding. And even the kids who played the main roles (Edmund,Peter, Lucy, Susan) were excellent actors.

I do not think anyone will be disappointed from this movie. It was over 2 hours long and it seemed to fly by.

I was also NOT surprised at the high Religious themes. They were RAMPANT all over the movie. Even Jesus make an appearance. (look for him...he has a big part, just might not LOOK like the Jesus we know). Well that and another person who was a surprise.

Anyway...having seen the PBS one I think this movie was sticking as close to the books as possible. I see this movie taking with it a few acadamy awards, if not for anything for the visual effects.

Go see it....you will not be disappointed.

Saw it today with the kids and loved it! The White Witch was perfect. We had to dash for the potty as soon as the credits started to roll and I think we missed some extra bit at the end. I thought I heard lucy talking. What was it?
She goes back to try to get back to Narnia and the Professor walks in and tells her you can't get back if you are looking (he should know since he has been there). They walk out of the room and there is sliver of light coming from the wardrobe. It closes slowly, the whole thing fades to black, and the rest of the credits roll.
I saw the BBC production of this when I was younger, and I enjoyed it. I'd probably watch this, but I'm not going to see it in the theaters. All the Christian stuff flew right over my head when I first saw it. I didn't really realize it until I was later told about it and then everything sort of fell together. Is it more obvious in this version?
Having never read the books, I really enjoyed the movie. I didn't mind the biblical analogies - Aslan is hardly the only "Christ" figure in popular fantasy or science fiction (Neo, John Connor, E.T.). I did get a very odd flashback, though, to Neil in an episode of the "Young Ones" early in the film, when the White Queen was offering the kid the "Turkish Delights."
