I'm not going to make fun of anyone that dies, but I have to say I really could care less about Richard Pryor being gone.

He was a brilliant comic and inspired other comics of every ethnicity, but as far as I'm concerned he's been dead for years...

I'm sorry...

Loved his stuff, from "Blazing Saddles" to "The Toy" to his amazing standup act. This guy is/was one of the best! MS took him from us even earlier then his recent passing. Pryor, Wilder and Brooks were one hell of a team back a few decades. It's too bad they didn't do more work together. Yet that perhaps why all there shit was pretty much top shelf. Little known fact; Pryor was originally considered for the role of Billy Ray Valentine in "Trading Places".

So long to a true comedy genius.

Some great Richard Pryor material can be found in the early 70s music documentary, "Wattstax," which only recently got unearthed on DVD. It shows his transition from the safer comedian he was during "Toast of the Town," "Ed Sullivan," old "Tonight Show" and even "The Partridge Family" and really introduced a whole new generation to cutting edge comedy.

Trivia: The role of Bart was intended for Richard Pryor, but due to the controversial nature of Pryor's stand-up routines of the day and his background, Mel Brooks couldn't secure financing for the project with Pryor in that role. So Pryor was made a co-writer of the script, and Cleavon Little played Bart. Pryor later got to star in a different western comedy - _Adi¢s amigo (1976)_ . (more)

I did not know that Richard Pryor was a writer on Blazing Saddles. I loved Richard Pryor one of the best all time. I know Ronnie really loved Pryor he was one of his top 3 comics of all time.

I've never listened to much Pryor, and didn't care much for his 80's
movies. But from what I understand, the "Holy Trinity" of comics (the
ones who most good comedians cite as their major influences) are Lenny
Bruce, Richard Pryor and George Carlin. Friends tell me Pryor's 70's
stand up stuff is some of the funniest shit ever done. Hopefully, HBO
or somebody will do a tribute show or run some of his old bits.

Damn... I just had a Pryor memory flashback. When I was about 13, I went to a Christian based summer camp. The camp was fun, but the Bible teachers were very strict about the music we listened to. There were a few "inner city" kids from Baltimore that were there. Late at night, when the Bible thumpers were asleep, these kids played an 8-track tape of Pryor. It was so hard not to laugh out loud while listening to that shit!

I think it had the monkey bit that Bobo mentioned, and it had a bit about John Wayne conquering his heart attack. I'd only seen Pryor on TV, so I'd never been exposed to uncensored Pryor. Damn, those were fun times!

It's sad news, but at least he's out of pain. MS is a horrible disease. I had a friend die a few months ago in an accident who had it, and it seemed like the accident was a more humane way for her to go than to just waste away. But it's sad all the way around. Pryor was a great, funny man and he'll be missed.

I started buying Pryor albums when I was 12 and they were unbelievably funny but also uniquely honest. He was writing about his drug use long before he burst into flames and came back to do one of his most successful acts about the incident. But if you listen to his 70's albums, he's talking about his drug use, but always in a self-depricating way; he would basically do routines about how stupid his own drug use was. I think that was why he was so influential as a commedian - like Lenny Bruce, Pryor was so open and honest with his material. That, and he was one funny motherfucker. As a young fan, I really think Pryor had an influence on me in terms of both appreciating good comedy and also understanding life and drugs and race and honesty and so many other things he stuck into his acts between the words "fuck" and "nigger". He had the filthiest children's albums ever. And for that I will always love Richard Pryor.

Rest in peace you crazy nigger.

Gene Wilder was diagnosed with nonHodgkins lymphoma in 1999, got very, very sick, but eventually recovered after going through Chemo. He's had some funny tv appearances in the last couple of years, but he still looks/ed frail.

Below is Gene Wilder in a 2002 or 2003 episode of "Will & Grace" where he played Will's clueless boss. Earlier this year he was on "Conan O'Brien" According to a quick IMDB check, he's recorded his voice for an upcoming movie - speaking of which, I did a quick IMDB check to see when Pryor's last film was David Lynch's 1997/98 "Lost Highway." While I remember Robert Blake in that, I don't remember Pryor.

In an odd "6 Degrees" kind of way, I also saw on IMDB that today is Terri Garr's birthday (Wilder's costar in "Young Frankenstein") and she's been battling MS since 1983. VERY sad. Over Thanksgiving Trio was running a marathon of old NBC era Letterman, and there was a 1983 episode where she was on and flinches when Dave randomly asks if her health was all right.

Anyway, back again to Richard Pryor - like a lot of our best comedians, I don't think many films really reflected how gifted he was (outside of the stand up concert films). After "Bustin Loose" he made a string of a lot of really big movies in the 80s that I thought were just lousy (yes, I'm looking at you "The Toy!"). He was really at his best (imo) in "Stir Crazy," "The Silver Streak," "Greased Lightning" and "Car Wash."

I'd rather have hope in my soul than soap in my hole...

Without a doubt the most influential comic of all time.
Every comic who came after him(especially black) was a Richard Pryor
wanna be. The only one who comes close is Carlin. If there was a Mt.
Rushmore of Stand Up, the first two faces are Pryor and Carlin,
everyone else is debatable(maybe Rodney). MS is a shitty disease.
I forgot all about Brewster's Millions... I did really like that movie, but I would have taken the million up front and not gone for it all.

I don't care what anybody says the Toy was funny. I loved see no evil, hear no evil which paired him up with gene wilder again, of course all of his '70's movies are just classics to watch. his '80's movies were all prety descent as well. that pairing of john candy and richard pryor in brewster's millions was just freaking hilarious. at least he's in a better place and he's not suffering anymore. I'm kinda glad I missed his wife talking on CNN because I just lost my niece on friday. so, to have seen that as well I would have started balling again.

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU, ALWAYS.
