I was in NYC the other night to visit someone. I pull up to the corner, feed the meter $1 for 40 minutes and check my cell phone for the time. 6:32pm. For those that don't know, you don't have to feed the meter after 7pm in nyc.

I come back to my car some time between 9 and 10 and find a ticket on my car. A cop ticketed me at 6:57 pm. I know I put in enough money to cover me to 7pm and I still got a ticket. Is there anything I can do about this? Is it just my word against the cop's? It's not like either of us have any proof that the meter did/didn't expire.

Fight the ticket online. http://www.nyc.gov/html/dof/html/contact/contact_app_hearbyweb.shtml

If you get a guilty verdict, appeal and make the cop come in.

Your word against his but he may not show up.

First thing I'd do is check the ticket for errors of any kind. Make
sure the body type, plate #, the address, check everything. If you find
a mistake, mail it in and explain the error and show any proof related
(registration, etc). One mistake the ticket gets thrown out.

Also, it must be legible. I've had tickets thrown out because they were so sloppy I couldn't read them.

If
your story is correct, look on the back for "Fast Meter" defense. If
you did put enough money and still got the ticket, chances are that's
what happened. If the meter is found to be defective, ticket gets
thrown out.

That's moving violations, Silera. Traffic cops dont have to appear in NYC. I've tried.

Ah. I fight them all online even if I'm wrong. I report every meter as faulty. 50/50 chance they're guilty or not. I pay them if I lose.

They're a shifty sort, those ticket cops. From my experiences they're more like the machines they work with than human beings.

I spoke to someone who gave me some good advice about fighting the ticket. I'm going to send it in saying Fast Meter.

If it was my fault and I got caught, I'd pay the ticket, but I think it's absurd that I pay for a ticket that I know I shouldn't have received.

And Chris, I didn't think of it. From now on, I'll be sure to leave that in my windshield when parking on the street.
