I don't download music illegally.

I have many reasons for this:

1) it IS illegal

2) I am professional musician and I feel strongly about supporting other musicians.

3) downloaded tracks are very often NOT the official/album versions.

4) sound quality is VERY important to me. Shared files are very often at a low bit rate because people are f'cking idiots.

Having said that, I went out and bought a CD today buy a band that is known for their production values. It is probably the most meticulously produced rock record of the year and I wanted to experience it as the artist intended.

All I want to do is copy the tracks onto my computer and to my Nano. That's it. I have no intention of sharing it and/or distributing it.

ITUNES WONT EVEN RECOGNIZE THE DISC! It won't play in iTunes. It plays only in Windows Media Player and or the embedded player on the disc which doesn't even come with an EQ.

I intentionally didn't buy the tracks from iTunes because they use a fairly low bit rate, and with the headphones I am using....I can hear all the limitations of digitally compressed music (headphones: Ultimate Ears UE-7pro and sometimes Ultimate Ears SuperFi EB's )

So now I am stuck with a disc that I can not rip, store, or play in the format/device that I want.

WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT???!

I-Tunes really blows. Try to find an ACDC recording on I-Tunes.
Doesn't exist. I also listen to alot of old Jazz, and you can hardly
ever find anything from Blue Note, anything international, etc. Half
the stuff I'm looking for doesn't exist on I-Tunes.

That
being said, they work with M4A, not MP3. Try using an MP3 program, if
you dont have one go to Download.com. Also alot of CD's are in WAV
format, look for a program that uses that.
Burn a copy of the disc using Windows Media Player. Then import the copy using iTunes - that should work.

Yeah, there are ways around the protection. I'm gonna burn it now.

I hate to sound like my Mom but, "it's the princible of the thing..."

All I wanted to do was pay for my music and listen to it my way.

There is a little warning on this disc "may not work with iPod". ( I like how they put the word "may" on there)

It's on the back of the case, along the spine. Those bastards. I didn't think to check the compatiblty of a frickin' CD.

you have purchased the CD, why not just download the files off a p2p
network? Not everything out there is low bitratre. Also, if you really
want to support the artist, isn't buying an album the least you can do?
I'm under the impression that they make as much money selling an album
at a retail chain as they do from a couple of stickers on their website.
The copy-protection schemes put on the CDs, put on there by the record companies, stop iTunes from recognizing it because they only want people using Windows Media files.

An easy way to avid all these copy protection things is to shut off autoplay on your computer. It will stop these programs from ever installing on your computer and you can do whatever you want.

I'm not mad at any one thing.

I'm just mad that the outcome was the OPPOSITE of what I wanted. I wanted portability and good fidelity on the device I paid for.

At the very least, there should be giant sticker on the front stating clearly that iTunes can NOT play it. Not just tiny little disclaimer along the spine.

I SHOULD ALSO MENTION....MY HOME DVD PLAYER CANT PLAY IT EITHER. "NO DISC"

It's made with real bits of Panther so...you KNOW it's good.

I'm afraid to put ANY music CD in my comp after that whole Sony/BMG fiasco. Those bastards should burn in Hell for that damn bug they created. I hope the law suits against them do well, even though I'm not one of the people who got burned by it.

I just wanted to add that 128K is dogshit. Sounds terrible and all the high stuff like cymbals sounds like you're dropping fairy dust on the recording.

This thread sums up perfectly the main failing of copy protection on CD's...they end up punishing people who actually buy the CD's FAR more than they'll ever get the people that don't.

Is there an industry more clueless and out of touch with their customers than the music biz?
