View Full Version : NYC Transit Strike possible

With only a couple of days to go the NYC Transit workers are threatening to walk off the job and If they do which is illegal under the taylor law it can cripple the city. A huge majority of people who work in the 5 boros rely on the subways and buses. The past 2 strike threats in 99 and 02 were resolved lets hope they work out a deal.

O and A... PARTY ROCK!!!!!

<p>Dont get me started on this BULLSHIT. These fuckholes shouldnt even
be allowed to be unionized. The fact that we have Police, Firefighters,
Transit Workers, all of whom provide ESSENTIAL services to the city
allowed to be unionized shows how left wing idealogues have put the
city and its residents in peril. </p><p>For the first 300 years on
NYC's existence, municipal workers weren't unionized (City wokers
became unionized in the 1960's). For good reason. First of all, you're
not fighting over wealth created by a business, you're fighting to grab
more public tax dollars. If you win, taxes must be raised, which hurts
the city's competitiveness with other municipalities. Second, if
workers who provide essential services go on strike, people will
literally die as a result. This is why we have the (never enforced)
Taylor law. Because by the nature of their work they are simply not
like private sector employees. If WalMarts employees go out on strike,
you can shop elsewhere. The City (and Government in general) is a
MONOPOLY by nature. If the Transit workers go on strike, many people
who rely on it will simply not be able to get to work. People who use
the subways the most are often poor and cannot afford anything else. So
if this drags on, thousands will not be able to pay rent, put food on
the table, etc. Thanks Roger. <br />
</p><p>ONE NARROW INTEREST GROUP can shut down the city because they want 55K per year instead of 50k </p><p>FUCK THEM. If you see a transit worker, do me a favor and kick him in the balls for me. <br />

The same way they always
did, and the same way everybody else does. By bringing skills to a job
that are in sufficient demand that an employer will be willing to pay
them accordingly. And the city/state is not going to go around paying
people poverty wages. It's politically untenable. Before these jobs
were unionized, they were effectively the same as they are now. Big
benefits/modest take home pay jobs. The only difference is now, we have
the threat of a strike hanging over our heads. <br />

The contact at the steel plant invited them down for a discussion. The steel plant person called this guy a 'stone cold communist&quot; and had a serious suggestion for my grandad and johnny mcgurk(president) He asked them if they had the five story vats that colgate would boil soap in. they said yes and he suggested dropping him in there. he said that no one would miss him. they were taken back by his suggestion and didn't follow it.</p><p>Instead, they harrassed him. John would walk up to him 'on the job' and spit in his face so he would retaliate and they could fire him. After the guy had enough he wound up leaving the company</p>

<p>Actually the city can fine them much much more than that if its the same as last time. They can impose fines of up
to $25,000 per day against each individual member of the union to
recoup their losses. Dont forget, its an illegal strike to begin with,
and if they are going to send the city's reciepts plummeting, then the
city has the right to go about trying to recover their losses. <br />

<p>You cant fire the workers. You need competant people to run the NYC subway system. You have to deal with the union. </p><p>You
could fire Kalikow, for letting things get this far. But chances are,
he has the go ahead from his bosses (Bloomberg and Pataki)</p><p>One
thing you need to understand is when you give a package to one set of
civil servants, you have to give it to all. The other unions will get a
judge to give them the same package. And the city cant afford that. So
you have to be very careful about &quot;Just giving them the money&quot;. <br />

<p>It hasn't happened yet, last I heard. Its to affect about 50,000
people in the Bronx and Queens areas on Monday. I actually took that as a good
sign. It shows me that the union is hedging its action. That tells me
they're not as far apart as they're saying publicly. I've also heard
that for 4% annual they'll sign. The MTA's &quot;Final offer&quot; was 3% per.
I'm hoping Bloomberg and Pataki put their capes on and swoop in Sunday
night to avoid any strikes. They control the MTA. But as I said in my
previous post, its complicated. <br />

I really can't see why they didn't come to a deal. The last offer from the MTA seemed like a decent compromise, and even if they didn't want to take it it had to be close to what TWU would be willing to accept. I have a feeling this will blow up in their face.<br />

I&quot;m supposed to be in Manhattan now for an interview, but considering
the 59th Street bridge is backed up a couple miles, and I was goni to
get dropped off there and walk across, that's not good.&nbsp; Also the
LIRR stations are packed, and it all looks like it's one step away from
a full scale riot in the city<br />

<p>This man can help bust a strike:</p><p><img src="http://www.simpsoncrazy.com/gallery/misc/mugshot_grampa.gif" border="0" /></p><p>&quot;We can't bust heads like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to tell them stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I took the fairy to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe so I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on them. Give me five bees for a quarter you'd say. Now where were we, oh ya. The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because if the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones.&quot;</p>

Because this union is different from the others. They dont want to
compromise. Listen to their demands. They want &quot;respect&quot;, they're
fighting for &quot;the rights of working people everywhere&quot;. How do you have
a rational negotiation with someone who talks like this? Should Kalikow

<p>He said it better than I could, so here's the Mayor's statement about the strike&nbsp;</p><p>Source (http://www.nyc.gov/portal/index.jsp?epi_menuItemID=c0935b9a57bb4ef3daf2f1c70 1c789a0&amp;epi_menuID=13ecbf46556241d3daf2f1c701c789a 0&amp;epi_baseMenuID=27579af732d48f86a62fa24601c789a0&amp; pageID=mayor_press_release&amp;catID=1194&amp;doc_name=htt p%3A%2F%2Fwww.nyc.gov%2Fhtml%2Fom%2Fhtml%2F2005b%2 Fpr473-05.html&amp;cc=unused1978&amp;rc=1194&amp;ndi=1)&nbsp;</p><p><span class="ltgrey_11pt"><p>&quot;Tonight, Roger Toussaint and the TWU have
taken the illegal and morally reprehensible action of ordering a
citywide strike of our mass transit system.</p>

<p>&quot; The contingency plan that we outlined last week will go into effect
and be implemented for Tuesday morning's rush hour. Among other
measures, HOV lanes have been designated; Police checkpoints are being
established and a new fare structure for taxis is in effect. The entire
contingency plan can be viewed on <a href="http://www.nyc.gov/">www.nyc.gov</a>.</p>

<p>&quot; At this hour, City Corporation Counsel Michael Cardozo is joining
the MTA in requesting an emergency hearing in front of Brooklyn Supreme
Court Justice Theodore Jones.&nbsp; We will seek to show that the TWU is in
contempt of the court's earlier injunction and ask the court to impose
severe fines on the union and its members.</p>

<p>&quot;I hope Judge Jones will grant this motion as quickly as possible.&nbsp;
The union must understand there are real and significant consequences
to their actions.</p>

<p>&quot;<font size="2">For their own selfish reasons, the TWU has decided that their
demands are more important than the law, the City and the people they
serve. This is not only an affront to the concept of public service; it
is a cowardly attempt by Roger Toussaint and the TWU to bring the City
to its knees to create leverage for their own bargaining position. We
cannot give the TWU the satisfaction of causing the havoc they
desperately seek to create.</font></p>

<p>&quot;Going forward, we will need to be patient, considerate and
resilient. We can't let inconveniences, as massive as they are, stop
our economy, shut down our schools, or jeopardize public safety.</p>

<p>&quot; It will no doubt be a difficult time for people of this City and
the region as a whole.&nbsp; But New Yorkers have made a habit of pulling
through tough times and showing doubters what we're made of.&nbsp; These
traits will be put to the test as long as this strike lasts.</p></span>&nbsp;</p><p>To view this statement, click here (http://www.nyc.gov/html/om/html/2005b/media/pc122005-transitstrike300k.asx)&nbsp;</p>

needs to end, and it needs to end right now,&quot; Bloomberg said in a news
conference Wednesday, repeatedly lashing out at what he called an
&quot;illegal, selfish strike&quot; and questioning how union leaders could claim
their walkout would benefit the working class.</font></font><p> </p>
<p>
<font face="Verdana,Sans-serif"><font size="2" color="black">&quot;Working
people are the ones who are being hurt,&quot; Bloomberg said. &quot; The busboy is
getting hurt, the garment industry worker is getting hurt, the owners
of mom and pop businesses. ... The ones getting hurt the most are the
ones who can least afford it. If they don't get paid, they don't eat.&quot;</font></font></p>
<p>
<font face="Verdana,Sans-serif"><font size="2" color="black">The strike
was responsible for a 40 percent decline in business at restaurants, an
80 percent decline in visitors at museums, and a 90 percent decline in
customers at the Fulton Mall in Brooklyn, the mayor said. He estimated
the city's lost revenue at $300 million to $400 million a day.</font></font></p>
<p> </p> <p> </p>
<p>Tomorrow's an interesting day. The Union has 3 million in its
coffers. It's being fined 1 million per day, and tomorrow's the 3rd day
of the strike. Thats why the parent union has been distancing itself
in court from this local. It doesn't want to be on the hook for these fines.
Might also explain why Toussaint is now saying just take the pension
changes off the table and they'll go back to work.(The pension is
actually controlled by Albany, anyway) If
Toussaint wants to push past his bank account, he could find his local
bankrupt and out of business or financially strapped for many, many
years to come. Either way he goes down as an extremist labor leader who
ruined his union, and hurt his members and the city. </p>
<p>I know my (already long) day has been extended 3 hours because of
this. I'm leaving 5am/getting home 8pm. And forget about what business
is like. Dont ask.</p>
<p>Its amazing how its Cristmas and nobody's saying Merry Christmas to
anyone, because everything's such a mess and people are too preoccupied
just getting around. Well I still am. You only get so many Christmas', and I'm not going to let anyone ruin any of mine. </p>

Another thing, has anyone else noticed these Bike riders the last few
days? People who obviously never ride their bikes in the city are
running red lights, riding in the middle of the street, almost getting
hit by cars, almost running over pedestrians. The East Villiage was
particularily bad tonight. Somebody's gonna get fucking killed. <br />

<br />Even if you paid
CEO's nothing, it still wouldn't fix the problems with pensions and
healthcare costs. You're talking about companies with billions in sales
and payrolls. Healthcare is going up 2 and 3 times the rate of
inflation, and the problem with most pensions is people are living
longer, thanks to all those health benefits. But there's just not
enough $ at the top to solve these issues, so thats just class warfare,
not a proposal to fix anything. <p>&nbsp;</p><p>And of course, if you dont
offer to pay someone well to run a company, do you think you'll be able
to attract good people? And if performance still lags, that explains
the revolving door. As far as the golden parachutes go, thats common
business practice (even for mid level workers) in the financial
industry. Some average worker might get a &quot;severence package&quot; A CEO
gets a &quot;Golden parachute&quot;. Its the same thing, and CEO's have the same
rights as the rest of us to get these deals. Theirs are just bigger,.
but so was their job. &nbsp; <br />

It's so fucking ironic. People complain about the expanding gap between rich and poor, and yet there was so much complaining about how much the TWU workers made (just forget for a second the chaos the strike caused), like how dare these people THAT much money. God forbid THESE people make a good living for themselves, try to get ahead in life.<br />

<p>Well that pay package is actually a little skewed. Its an average of
50k, but you have cleaners and ticket takers on the low end, then
electricians and diesel mechanics on the high end. So the average is
50k, but the guy sweeping the floors isn't making that. Which is what I think most people assume.<br />
</p><p>And H-Box, you're the only one bring race into this. You, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. Nice company to be in.<img border="0" src="http://www.ronfez.net/messageboard/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/huh.gif" /> </p><p>Toussaint
came back to the bargaining table because his union was facing
bankruptcy if they stayed out. We dont know what the outline of the
deal is yet, because the mediator (correctly) insisted on a news
blackout. But my suspicion is that the union will end up losing for
going on strike. Between the fines imposed on the Local and the
individual members, its hard to see them not. The Mayor and MTA made it
clear that the judges fines were seperate from the bargaining process.
If they want help with the fines, they'll have to appeal them in court.
Toussaint will probably lose his job for this disasterous action he put
his members and the city through. Its also a lesson to the other municipal
unions that the rest of us city residents learned a long time ago. You
cant fight City Hall (and win). <br />

<br />Even that article
says they really dont know, and wont for quite a while. Whatever the
number is, no one can claim the city wont be hurt by this. And as the
article showed, the people hurt worse are those that can least afford
it. Which was always a huge issue for me, I work in the restaurant biz

and dishwashers. The guys who could least afford to take a day off, especially at Christmas. <br />

NYC Transit Workers Reject New Contract (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060120/ap_on_re_us/ny_transit_vote)

after the strike had ended, i heard on NPR that toussaint was seen as a moderate and a seel-out to the union, and that there was a growing more radical and ant-MTA faction of the local ... and that toussaint was elected on their platform, and quickly asserted himself from their party, and ideally won't get re-elected ...

as hardlined the MTA was their last offer, and a more radical faction dictating new demands -- how screwed will the public be ...?

<p>Let them go out again, and let the judges bankrupt this local with more million $ a day fines. They have 1.5 mil left. Then when they cant pay their fines, they'll lose the right to collect dues since the dues will be garnished to pay back the fines. They will then effectively cease to exist as a union, and ol Bulldog will be a happy guy. <br /></p><p>I've heard they're supposed to go back to the bargaining table, or maybe arbitration.
