I just realized how bad my ability to remember a name of a person I just met. A service technician came to my house to service the oil furnace and introduced himself. Ten minutes later and I can't remember his name. I should have check to see if he had his name on his shirt. Sometimes service techs name patch.

What the best way to remember a person's name when you meet them for the first time? I've tried associating their names with something about them, their physical features, where they work, etc. I can't find anything that really works for me.

I usually don't remember names unless I've seen them written down. If I
really care, I'll ask their name again at the end of the conversation
and repeat it to myself for a little while and try to make some
associations in my mind. I don't often use people's names anyway. "Hey,
how's it going?" vs. "Hey, Jim"

this will sound dumb but its what my father taught me.

When the person first introduces themselves to you, you say their name back to them when you introduce yourself or if you introduced yourself you say it back in another sentence.

Ex. "Hi I'm Bob"

"Hi Bob, Im James"

It sounds corny but if you tend to use it right away, and refer to them by it then you are less likely to forget it later.

It hasn't failed me yet.

same here and i know it happens and sometimes i'll repeat the persons name in my head a few times after i first meet them... 5 to 10 minutes later i can't remember it

so i've gotten to the point where i don't mind asking again. the worst is with relatives you don't see except for funerals or anniversaries and you don't remember their names

I'm not sure why but I always remember kids names and never the parents. It could be a kid I haven't seen in over a year and I still remember their name.

The secrete to remembering a person's name when you meet them is to actually care about what their name is. There is no trick to it, but like I said, you actually have to care about remembering the name. In most cases we meet someone in passing and don't put thought into who they are because we just don't care.

I am just awful with names. I try very hard these days to be better, though many times I'll forget it the moment someone will tell me their name.

For example:

"Thanks, James, I appreciate that."

"Yes, James, I miss Soundboard Fez too."

"James, I'm sorry, that it is still real to you."

"I think it's a disease too, Billy."
