I was actually going to joking post this thread title in the Lounge
a few months ago, but I decided against it in all good taste.

This
week has been the week from hell for me. Emotionally and
physically I'm destroyed and sick. I battled major demons of
lonliness and depression, and I threw myself into my job, to the point
where I didn't leave work until 10pm, 11pm, and 1am, respectively, on
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday night.

My depression had
reached a low point when I got a drunk dial from my own boss about what
a great time he was having with my entire staff while they were doing a
Christmas charity mission.

I was also stretched thin by our
afternoon show, because I was helping them out with a promotion they
were doing, so I was trying to coordinate all the contacts and
inventory we were doing for that event as well.

Finally, Friday was a new beginning. I bounced out of bed,
got into work, and churned through all of the work I had to get done,
because I wanted to show my boss how well I could hold down the fort
while he and my entire staff was gone.

At 3PM, I was done.
My interns and I had gotten everything done, and we were caught
up. The job my boss had given me was complete. at 4pm, I
left to go do a sales appearance, which put some extra money in my
pocket, and then I came back to the studio, at 6pm, where the afternoon
show gave me a nice christmas present as a thank-you for all the work I
had been doing for them.

I left the studio at 8:30, happy and
content. I had gotten through the week; everything would be back
to nomal and I could go on vacation soon, and Christmas time finally
felt like it was here.

Then this happened.

That
would be my truck. On it's side. Facing the wrong
way. With no roof. If you look closely, you can see the XM
antenna peeking out between the tree and the glass.

Pretty much
what happened was, I was about 3 miles away from my house when I saw a
whole bunch of police cars on the other side of the road. Like
any good citizen, I switched from the left lane to the right lane to
give them all the room they needed.

And that's when she got loose.

I
hit a huge patch of black ice, which caused my truck to spin around at
about 40-50 MPH. I oversteered trying to correct it. I slid
into the entrance of a residential complex that's off the main road,
where the sides of the drivers side wheels hit the curb. That
instantly broke both axles, and turned the car over, hitting the tree.

When
I opened my eyes, I could feel the dirt and glass that got kicked up on
me. I flexed my hands, wiggled my toes, and ran my tongue over my
teeth.

I exhaled and said, "Holy shit, I'm OK." (And... I wasn't wearing my seatbelt)

I immediately went into survival mode. I knew my car was
still running, she was on it's side, and I had to GET OUT GET OUT GET
OUT. The joke was, I've seen enough episodes of CHiPs to know
that when the car is on it's side, they usually blow up about three
seconds later.

I turned off the car but kept the battery
on. I tried the moon roof - wouldn't open. (OF COURSE, the
roof is fucked up.)

I tried kicking out the windshield - no go, and it just got more glass on me.

Fortunately, I got the passenger side window open and I climbed up that way.

In
about three seconds, the cops from the other side of the road came over
and started talking to me... Apparently there was another black-ice
accident on the other side. The cop couldn't believe I was OK and
I self-extracted myself, and kept telling me how lucky I was.

The ambulance came and checked me out, and they also told me about how lucky my fat ass was.

But wait,

That really is quite a story. I'm glad to hear that you (and your fat ass) are ok.

People always say that family is the most important thing, and sometimes it takes episodes like this to make us realize that. When I read about your nieces, I thought of my own nephews and niece, who just always make me feel...loved.

Anywho, just wanted to say congrats for coming out of it, and best of luck trying to figure out what, if anything, it all means.

In light of "to sue or not to sue"...

The accident was on a major four-lane highway that runs east-west between two major arteries that run north-south in New Jersey.

The accident also took place 1 1/2 miles away from the public works building of the town where the salt trucks are.

But three accidents in the span of 15 minutes... that's a bit much, especially since no one was speeding.

At
that moment I started to have a panic attack and freak out. The
reality of what just happened started to sink in and I started to lose
it. I had to go into another room and sit down... I felt like
Jack Bauer at the end of the Virus season of 24. I just had to
let everything out from the last week, and get re-attached to the world
I'm in.

, but I'm just spooked because of how
fast the road got icy. Usually you can expect something like
that, but Friday night, the roads were clear - what the hell
happened? The surprise aspect - that I never saw it coming - is
what's really getting to me.

I
had two accidents where I had no chance to anticipate what caused them,
plus a less severe black ice incident, so I know exactly how you feel.
And yes, it will make you a bit paranoid a result. I dont have any
advice for you to on how to deal with it, either. You will probably
find yourself looking to anticipate trouble more and driving more
defensively as a result, which is a good thing.

Glad you're OK.

Matty - relieved you are ok - very similar experience happened with me back in 1994 when I walked out of my car without a scratch, which had flipped over on it's top off of interstate 95 near Richmond. Very odd, liberating, terrifying, fortunate experience - to look back on a car you were in and see it crashed up, and the fact that you are out of it and all right. Much like you I found comfort with family members. Lots of introspection about luck and fate and the future and where I was in my life. My mind kept jumping back to the 1993 movie FEARLESS where Jeff Bridges survives a plane crash - I related, even though that was obviously hyped up and different experience. It took a good 2 years before I really felt somewhat level again, and even now, 11 years later, many of the changes in my life from then are still with me now. Mostly good ones, too. Nothing like cheating death to make you feel alive.
Never lost
conciousness. I opened my eyes because I was flinching as the
truck overturned. I was aware of the entire situation... and
didn't see any life flashing before my eyes or anything.

I
think, as the truck was sliding, I knew that there was two
possibilities... either I hit the side of the divider and the airbags
would deploy, or I'd spin out into the grass on the other side of the
road. I DIDN'T know that the six-inch curb was there, and at the
rate of speed I was going, that's what caused the overturn.

It
could have been worse... I could have gone careening into the apartment
complexes, or god forbid I could have hit somebody else. I could
have overturned sooner and got curbed. I could have overturned on
the otherside and got thrown.

If I did see Q, that would have been pretty interesting.

and
btw, thanks to everyone for their well wishes. It was just an
experience I wanted to share, and it was the first time I felt overly
motivated to write and not have snarky comments and asshole attitude to
show for it.

Like mdr said, if you haven't been to the doctor since, you need to go, NOW. My mom was in a horrible car accident in her teens like yours, and seemed completely fine at the time. In the years since, she is wracked with terrible neck and back pains on a daily basis, and nothing can done at this point. Accidents put the body through incredibly unusual stress that can hurt it in countless ways which aren't immediately apparent.

This was a real wakeup call about how fucked up my life has been lately, and what I should do to be healthier, both mentally and physically.

=

Aphorism: There is nothing like Death to remind us of the Quality with which we live our lives.

=

Well, learn whatever lesso ya want, you're alive, and that's the good news, and good enough; screw thw car screw everything else.

Not to de-rail, but to see how easily it could go the other way: Today I drive my mom to the doctor who replaced both her knees. Best guy in the county, just the best surgeon around, the guy lives to heal others to make them walk again.

Horrific story short: He was on vacation with family in an airport van that flipped when the driver over-steered, the van flipped, ejecting his daughter, which the van then landed on top of. To describe the scene further is impossible, but the Dr. did exactly that at the memorial service for his daughter, which had to be held in a college auditorium to fit all who showed. So, this is what he has to carry, his surviving family has to carry, for the rest of their lives.

All of our whines, moans, problems, bitching, pettiness, and quite a few other emotions just disappear, or pale, or really seeming fucking stupid, when you realize that if you're breathing in air right now, you're doing pretty fucking good, and if you're here, meaning you have a computer, you're doing better then 99.999% of the people who ever lived.

Rant done. Glad yer OK.

=

Aphorism 2: We make no mistakes, save one; not learning from our mistakes.

One more strike, you're out.

Seriously though,
glad you're ok. I flipped my Jeep in August 2003 in downtown
Philly, when an asshole bitch ran a red light and as I was going
through the green, hit my passenger side and my jeep flipped onto it's
side, driver side down. I was making out with the pavement.
I also had Lou with me so he was really lucky his feet weren't crushed
since the impact was on his side. The thing I was most pissed off
about? I was on my way to the hospital to see my grandfather, and
I never got to do that since they took me to a different
hospital!

One thing I wanted to point out,
as you were flipping, did it feel like slow motion? Even though
my impact was at 40mph, it flipping part felt like an eternity.
Lou was trying so hard to pull me towards him so my shoulder wouldnt
get crushed on the ground. Fun.

Glad you're safe. Just don't drive for the next few weeks.

I
remember mostly everything from the accident. The flip wasn't in
slow motion, but the slide was. I know the term "literally" is
overused, but it literally felt a roller coaster.

Like I said before, everything took me by
surprise. The roads (I thought) were clear. I had no
indication of ice, and it's a road I've driven on 1000 times
before. It's a BRAND NEW, well-lit road. I've had a few
mini panic-attacks driving home at night since then.

I'm
also going to have to explain to my GM and my boss tomorrow what
happened to the van. My boss will find this amusing, I'm sure.

Fortunately, to get the van driveable again, it's gonna
cost less than 100 bucks. The mirror we have is usable for the
time being, although it will need to be replace as well.

Yes, I was joking. For Pete's sake, I am reckless, but I'm not
stupid. If I was ever pissing blood, I'd be in a ER right away.

Hence why I made the joke.

So, an update....

The truck was (obviously)
totalled. I then ran into some drama at work about my ride, but
it got worked out. The lesson learned: Never have a major
accident this time of year. With all the offices being closed
(from insurance to banks to your job), it's just a really
time-consuming and somewhat frustrating situation.

I'm going to be taking over a lease on another
truck, but I have to wait for the credit app to go through, which could
take up to 10 business days. I then have to figure out how I'm
going to pick up the truck, as it's in central PA. (It's a
really, really long story)

I went to the salvage
yard to go pick up the last of my belongings out of my truck.
There wasn't much, but there was a few sentimental things I wanted to
grab before I signed over the car to the insurance company. It
was really depressing to see the ride I had for the past three years in
the state it was in. It was literally like a dead body - it was
wrapped in plastic and had an orange tag hanging from it.

I'm
going to be renting a car for the next week, and that should hopefully
take me to when I can get the (new) truck that I'm leasing.

The
funny thing was, I was trying to figure out how I was going to listen
to Howard's debut show, because as a radio geek, I was kind of
curious. Thanks to Hertz, that is no longer a problem.

I
joking told my father that with some of the settlement from the
insurance company, I wanted to take a trip to Vegas, as I've been
wanting to do for sometime. He looked at me and said, "Son, I
think you've used up all your good luck for the next year or so."

This thread was enough to pull me out of message board hiding.. Im so glad you're ok Matt.. I think I literally almost cried reading the thread title...until I realised it was written by you and I could then breathe again. You seem to be such a trooper about this which is so good. Ive only been in minor accidents and thats been enough to keep me from driving for awhile.

Glad youre ok again..

So, to wrap up this thread with a final update...

After
a month of using company vehicles, borrowing cars, and other stupidity,
I finally took possession of my new ride - a 2003 Ford F-150 - which I
bought from my father.

It's a relatively low-mileage truck, so
I'll be keeping it until it's warranty expires and then I'll probably
buy the car I INTENDED to buy once the Explorer was paid off.

That would be...

Your Dad's probably right. On the other hand, you might be on to something, and this might be your high-luck window of opportunity.
