Sorry if this was discussed in the past. In fact I'm sure it's been brought up but I had no idea what to search for as far as past threads.

But anyway, why do our news networks blow? I've been checking the BBC's website online for a lot of my news for a few months. I mean I'm not on top of the world, I know there's lots of stuff I miss but I can get an overview of what's happening all over. Sure, the BBC has their own agenda from time to time but it's coming off as one of the best news agencies around.

But regardless of what you think of the BBC, our news if fucking terrible. Ariel Sharon's stupid stroke made me really notice it for the 1st time. CNN, FOX and MSNBC all stopped covering other stuff just to keep on top of that one story. CNN especially was bad, staying with it forever.

I started to think, "Gee, when is the last time I saw a story about Africa on one of those networks?" When is the last time I heard about South American topics unless a coup had just happened?

It just seems that we're VERY self centered and our news agencies concentrate way too much on our own country. They stick to a very small spectrum of topics and beat them to death. There's A LOT going on in the world, cover it.

Capitalism, pure and simple. They have to make money, which means they have to show what people want to see. As long as people keep on tuning into shit like the Michael Jackson trial and Natalee Holloway, as long as they keep on buying into every fear inducing craze, as long as people don't give two shits about anything that doesn't affect them directly, the news will stay the same. It's a mirror, and it shows an ugly picture.

Cuz we don't care what happens around the rest of the world unless
in somehow will affect us. Stop making yourself look smart. If you
don't like what you're watching, don't watch. And besides the news
media is controlled by a selected few and they filter out what we
watch. Same with the print media.

If you were able to read it and respond to it, then it was
successful don't you think? But I guess you'll take the higher road,
won't you. You win.

Back to point, americans in general don't care
about what's happening in the rest of the world unless it directly
affects them in some point. It's like the news, for example black
people get killed everyday in the hood but since it's happening in the
hood, do we really care about that stuff? If it doesn't happen in your
own back yard, you don't give 2 shits about it. Similar to what's going
on with emminent domain, people's houses and property are being taken
away by the governement for private interest but unless it's happening
to you or someone you know, you don't really care cuz it's not
affecting you.

Stars and stuff get flack all the
time for putting their nose where it doesn't belong. But if some
regular joe smoe did the same thing, no one would really pay attention.
People starving in Ethophia, the genocide in Africa, the killing of
Tookie, etc. Sure we bash them for their views, but without some STAR
power, some issues would continue to be ignored or lack media attention.
Dude! We're talking about the news and how the news media in america is
more ego-centralized about what's happening in america than what's
happening around the rest of the world unless america is involved
somehow like in the middle east. What are you talking about?
type of news telecast usually pertaining to that culture.
I honestly didnt read what Moe had written in his introduction to this thread, and my reaction above was mostly knee-jerk. But Moe is right, and I blame our own news and our own cultures obsession on stupid shit for the pandering job our own local news agencies tout as "news". I believe it is the primary reason we are viewed as arrogant around the world, because we appear to be far more focused Britney's stretch marks of a celebritys infidelity or raunchy lifestyle, while the rest of the world is in chaos. The British are more of a literate people, and have always had a stronger interest in outside politics and events around the world than we do. It is a shame (on us and our obsessions), and it is probably why you are drawn to their type of news coverage.

Actually, the BBC is about as good as it gets. For a good local radio
news, 93.9 WNYC. You get news plus depth where you'll understand the
topics much better.

American television news is shit. It's completely profit driven and that means it panders to what it thinks viewers want - celebrities and sensationalism - and does not spend money on foreign coverage because it's expensive and we Americans, generally, don't care enough about it to make it profitable. Print media is still the best because there's still a handfull of big newspapers keeping the industry ballancing profits and committment to journalism. But only a few of the big papers really devote resources to interntaional news - NYT, Wash Post, LA Times, Christian Science Monitor. The other papers generally depend on Reuters, AP, AFP and other news outlets to serve thier international news pages. Which is why, really, the internet is the best thing for staying up on international news - you have access to news from any place just by searching Yahoo or Google news. Hell, my own articles on Yemen appear twice in my Yahoo news alerts, (daily emails of any story with the word "Yemen" in it.), from both IRIN news and Reuters' AlertNet services.

Aside from the outlets above, I give special props to the Christian Science Monitor for international coverage. Not only do they really consider it their mission to find the stories and places that are being ignored by other news agencies, they put a shitload of background and old stories on their website. They also do more in-depth coverage of places, stories and issues. They really want to encourage readers to understand the obscure parts of the world.

For up-to-date analysis on international affairs I trust International Crisis Group. They're generally an on-the-ground organization, which means that their lives may depend on their analysis being right or not. This is one of the keys to trusting sources, in my opinion - having an institutional incentive for accuracy over ideology or other agendas.

I guess I should also plug my own agency: IRIN. It's humanitarian news for the UN. At the very least, it's going to be subjects and places that are generally neglected. Like Yemen.

I'm going to cover women's issues in the election, and general democracy themes, but I'm going to steer real clear of partisan politics. About a month ago the ruling party kicked off the campaign season by kicking in the ribs of an Al-Arabya journalist. Look at the number of Yemen reports from the Committee to Protect Journalists. I also don't know how to keep my mouth shut when confronted by members of this corrupt fucking government. So I'll just sit back and see if Saleh can beat his last "election" results of 96.3% of the vote. Slightly less than Saddam.
This so-called news coverage put me over the edge, and I haven't watched since. That includes the 9/11 coverage; it wasn't any different: "ok, let's show the planes hit the buildings again, and then sit around and talk about how we don't know anything." I think i've seen the plane footage 4 times at this point.

The American public has no international perspective (much like our president). As a superpower, we were able to dictate our own interests, so even Europe wasn't terribly important to us. As an experiment, just go to any other countries news page and count the international stories on the front page.

These days, I get most of my news from Gooogle News and NPR. Sometimes, I'll pick up a news magazine or something like The Economist, but if you're watching anything other than the Daily Show, you're probably wasting your time.
