Considering the year, not a shock that DCRTV Dave choose Don for 2005 - in DC Don & Mike have always been bigger than Stern - but what I found most surprising was who he had previously chosen, especially in 2003:

DCRTV's Person Of The Year: Don Geronimo - 12/27 - At the end of each year, DCRTV picks one or several folks to be our "Person/People Of The Year." Someone who's had a big impact - for better or worse - on the local media scene. This year, the choice was easy. Probably the most illuminatingly "truthful" voice on the radio dial - WJFK-FM's Don Geronimo (aka Michael Sorce). We've heard he's painfully shy in private life, but get him behind a microphone and he opens up and lets it flow. For 20 years, with his radio partner Mike O'Meara, Geronimo has shared with DC area radio listeners just about everything - from the pet peeves of day-to-day life to the raging, somewhat petty wrath for his mortal enemies in the radio biz. And he has let us all share in his family life, including his marriage to Freda and the raising of their son, Bart, now a college student. Freda's death last summer in a car accident caused many to speculate that it would also be the end of Geronimo's radio career. How could he ever come back to do his show again - at least like it was, we wondered. But Geronimo did. No, it wasn't easy. For him or his listeners. Hearing about his trip to the Baltimore ER to see Freda's still life-supported body. Or his tales about run-ins with telemarketers who still call Don's house and ask for Freda. But it was "real" radio. Especially on August 1, 2005 when Geronimo delivered a stunningly heartfelt monologue on his first day back after Freda's death. Yeah, it's no secret that not everyone likes Don Geronimo. We hear the criticism. He's a blowhard, a pompous gasbag, he's over-the-hill, he's a hack. Yet, too much of radio these days is pre-fab, consultant-driven crap. Boring and bland. Corporate. But, Don Geromino lets it all hang loose - heart and soul, flesh and blood, the current WJFK program director be damned. Geronimo, whose head contains an encyclopedia-like history of the past three-plus decades of DC area TV and radio, brings to our radio airwaves a refreshing, powerful, brutal honesty. Yeah, perhaps he'll never be a big nationally-known superstar, but when it comes to DC area radio - it doesn't get any bigger and brighter than Don Geronimo.....

Past People Of The Year - 12/27 - Don Geronimo joins an impressive list of other area media "greats" who've been selected as DCRTV's "Person/People Of The Year." Here are our previous selections - 2004: radio and TV veteran Walt Starling and 98 Rock newsman Lopez (both whom died in 2005); 2003: (now former) WJFK-FM talkers Ron Bennington and Fez Whatley and WASH/Z104 (now defunct) "Girl Talk" hosts Debra Leigh and Erica Hilary; 2002: WTOP programmer Jim Farley; and 2001: Clear Channel's DC radio czar Bennett Zier.....

DCRTV

Well, I agree 100% with DCRTV's Person of the year, It's been a very rough and tumble year for the Don and Mike show and Don personally. I applaud him for coming back and keeping the show going despite His Major loss, it shows what a professional he is. That first show when he came back in August was the most real and gut wrenching show I have ever listened to. This show has stood the test of time, time slots, producers, management, etc. and their still hanging in there 20 yrs. later. I can think of a more deserving person to get Person of the Year.

I'm feelin good Geronimo vibes in here. Been listening to D&M on and off over the years since I was way too young to be hearing it, still love it for the most part. If it wouldn't have been for D&M I'd have never heard of Ron & Fez and that would've really sucked.

And as far as I know Buzz is still with the show, I know he was sick recently but nothing serious right?

Dejavue! 2005 and I'm defending Don and Mike on here...again! haha

Twenty years with a radio team - has been number one three different times of the day (Morning, Afternnon and Middays) - they remain huge in Washington, and while DC is the number 7 or 8 market in the country, it is still the second most lucrative in ad revenue (behind Sacramento, California), mostly because 3 of the top 10 communities/counties in the country are all around the Washington Beltway, which translates into enormous piles of money for CBS/Infinity - got better ratings than any show on WJFK, including Stern, for pretty much their entire run - they make more money for the station than any other show, including Stern, which is pretty much unheard of in any market for the afternoon show to be the tent pole holding together the radio station (O&A being the other obvious example when they were on terestrial) - a year after actually being called out on the floor of the Senate (only he and Stern share that), they reworked their show to play safely in the Post Janet Jackson Tit era we live - they have remained in terestrial, which should count for something (I still like local radio and television) - they have bombed in markets as often as they have succeeded, but the ones that gave them a chance they have become very popular (Baltimore, Las Vegas and Sacramento) - people still like them and they still do some funny shit; maybe not like the early or mid 1990s, but it's still there for their fans - AND, as DCRTV pointed out, there is no one more honest on the radio than Don, something that even D&M haters should be able to admit.

I wasn't trying to school anyone, tho - I actually like Moe, and Spoon, and you - both Moe and I just have our pavlovian responses when this topic comes up, however, and I'm really sorry it got ugly last night. Just as most folks were expecting to see Moe show up in this thread, I'm sure there are plenty of folk who were not surprised to see me defend the show's merits. Bottom line for me is that while I will still catch D&M from time to time, Ron and Fez have kind of spoiled me with every other show out there - however, I do know that there are a ton of people from all over the country (not just DC) who got turned onto R&F because of Don and Mike. Maybe not as many as O&A, but there's still a lot of folk out there who dig both shows. Hell, there are people who refuse to buy the "DJ WARS" crap and like all of these shows - Stern, O&A, D&M, R&F, the Monsters, etc.

Just wanted to make a contribution on this topic : I think Don Geronimo (and Mike O'Meara) have a good show. I also liked Ron & Fez, a show I learned of through the D&M show. I do miss Ron & Fez and wish I could pick up a stream of the show, but that's the way it goes. These days (for a while at least) you can stream just about any show on terrestrial radio, including The Radio Chick, back on in NYC. So take your pick and enjoy what you want.

If any show realy "sucked" so badly, why would it still be broadcast? If a show is good it will remain on the air for years at top revenue earning positions.

Don has been in this top earning pole position for every one of the 18 years I have been tuning in. That should satisfy his critics.

this one's for ziggy
