I'm getting a new computer tommorow and plan on picking up an anti-virus program as well. Any idea on what is good (or best), Norton, Mcafee?
I've been using Fix-It Utilities for years and never had a problem.

I really like AVG by grisoft. its free ( free.grisoft.com ) and has a really small footprint, meaning it does not use a lot of your system rescources. it updates daily, automatically. i have never had a problem with it, and they very few times i have had a virus, it has caught it immediatly. once in a while i will do an onlnie virus scan just to make sure, but i never have a problem.

For my PC things were cool for a while with Norton and Macafee with Spy Bot, but all to a point. It became tougher and tougher to get rid of that crap.

I'll second the AVG vote. Some of those other programs are too invasive and end up blocking stuff you want. I've used the free version of AVG for years and haven't had a problem.

I've been using PC-Cillin for a year now and it works great. It doesn't slow down your computer like McAfee, but the updates do take a while to download. Unless you have a broadband connection, then it's not a problem.

But it seems at least once a year there's a virus or piece of spyware that my Norton misses, Adaware can't clean and I'm reinstalling Windows...AGAIN.

Maybe it's my own fault by something I do, but I was under the impression I had been getting A LOT more computer literate in the past few years. Could be wrong.

I cannot reccomend enough the Zone Alarms Security Suite. It updates itself automatically, searches itself automatically, informs you of any spyware and adware, checks to make sure that certain programs have internet access and those that do not. It's got firewalls, It's got IM Protection, It's Got Email Protection, It has everything. The downside is that it can run a a pretty penny.
I'm thinking of trying a free year of Kaspersky Internet Security 2010. Anyone know if it's any good? Right now I have AVG, Spybot, and MalwareBytes.

I have Kaspersky and would not recommend. It hogs my system resources, using 86% of the CPU capacity at times. I have tried to contact customer service to no avail.

I put MSE on all new systems and cleanups that I do for people.

Non-intrusive, no annoying pop-ups, free, and a good detection rate.
