I'm in the market for an MP3 player or IPod, but I'm not sure what to get.

I
am wary about an Ipod because of the ITunes software. I don't
like the fact that Apple knows every single song I have. I also
don't like the fact that things have to be "converted" or somesuch.

Or maybe I'm wrong and I'm just propogating rumors. I dunno, I've never had an Mp3 player before.

I'm getting an MP3 player in my new phone, but I'd like some advice on what to get.

I have 100 dollars in credit at Target (plus discount), so anything available from there would be a big plus.

Thanks!

I wouldn't recommend the iPod. It's a great looking, great designed piece of hardware WHEN IT'S WORKING. I bought one last November and since that time I've had to have it replaced once because of a crappy battery, and now the the replacement's battery is acting a little weird.

If you want a cell phone MP3 player and you want to avoid iTunes, avoid the Motorola ROKR, the iTunes phone. I've heard good stuff about the Sony Walkman phones. I've never used them, don't know where to get them, they won't hold as much as iPods and they're probably very expensive. But if you want an MP3 player in your phone it's the way to go, or so I've heard. You can use flash memory cards to expand the memory in one of those phones. I honestly wouldn't recommend it, but if that's the way you want to go, look into that.

100 dollars?

Get the Dell Ditty. It trumps Ipod's Shuffle since the Ditty has an LCD screen.

http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/dj_ditty?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd

For 200, you can get the 5g Dell Pocket DJ. For 250, the 20g Dell DJ, and for 300, the 30g Dell DJ

They
last longer than the Ipod, dont have any battery issues, and are
overall supeior to Apple's piece of crap. The only thing the Ipod has,
is color. And I'm not some dumb kid that just likes whatevers bright
and shiny

I have the Dell DJ 20gb..its the 1st generation one so i little different then the new one but same basic stuff, and I must say I absolutely love it. Ive dropped it ive cracked it and it still performs like a bull...The first one I had actualyl broke you couldnt hear sound out of it with headphones or speakers..and I was 10 days over the warranty, BAM they gave me a new one no charge at all...granted it was a refurbed one but still, I appreciated it. The only downside to it, is the FM transmitter by Belkin that you can buy with it. It breaks very easily...if you dont have the fm transmitter laid flat will hooked up the cords begin to come out after time because of tension and then finally the wires begin to rip and you lose sound and whatnot, its quite annoying, but besides that the actual player is amazing. I recommend it.
just has everything I need in the palm of my hand. The Phone plan for
it even works out about $70 cheaper than my previous one did.

The
only drawback is that I wish there was a way I could access the XM

there. Minor drawback though.

I have a year old iriver h320. I am kinda a technogeek, so it is great for me. It playedvideo a year before the new ipods, you can record from a line in source if you want to make mp3s of cds on the fly or even record a concert, it has an fm radio, it is very customizable and you can run rockbox (an open source firmware that is superior to most mp3 player operating systems).

The ipodshave form factor....they are slim and sexy, but EVERYONE has one. I always like to have something a little different from everyone else, and this player is simply better for me.

The newer iriver H10, on the other hand, is crap so stay away

I've only had it for about 6 weeks, but I love my iPod video and haven't had any problems. I did, however, learn a lesson today about what pricks Apple can be. The iPod video has the capability of being output to TV so that you can view photos and video in a larger size. I hooked my iPod up to the TV with an RCA cable, and it didn't work. I consulted the instruction booklet and found that in order to output the video iPod, you need to purchase a special cable from Apple, because a regular RCA cable won't work. I was about to purchase the cable from Apple, went a consultation with product reviews revealed that Apple's cable is a standard RCA cable, except that, for no good reason except to sell cables, they switched the yellow and red leads. When using a standard cable, you have to remember that the red lead goes to video, and the yellow lead goes to audio. Parasites.

by the way, the LG phone might be built more solidly than the motorola e815, but the e815 is much more modifiable to get full OBEX bluetooth etc. and it is an mp3 player as well. It's also cheaper. With my NE2 and $50 rebate mine was free. Check out the discussions on howardforums.com.
Begin your response here...

After
repeatedly getting about an hour's worth of music on a full charge, I
got tired of waiting for the this BS lawsuit stuff to finish so I
decided to hound Apple (corporate, local apple store, etc..) and
eventually got referred to the customer satisfaction department.
Apparently this is some difficult task because when I called the lady
asked my who gave me the number to call and then put me on hold while
they verified with the guy who gave it to me :) End result (drum
roll please): They replaced my 3G 20 gig iPod (brand new, not a
refurb) and the lady also shipped me a new 60GB video iPod in black.
She said it was not soemthing they normally did, but she knew
how much time I had spent.

As cool as the 60gb looked, I really
didn't need the additional space and I also could not imagine watching
shows on a 2.5 inch screen so I sold it on eBay for right at $400
:) Went and bought the Creative Vision that has a 30GB HD,
an almost 4 in color TFT screen, accepts DivX and MPG4, and it
has a battery that lasts about 8 hours (you can also buy additional
batteries to carry on long trips). In a word it's bad-ass and
also accepts Compact Flash which is what my digital SLR uses so I can
also store tons of images without a laptop. It's also not much
bigger than the older iPods so it's not like you're carrying around a
novel :)

I got tired of waiting for the this BS lawsuit stuff to finish

=

Not sure which lawsuit you're referring to but the problem for many seems to be the Digital Rights Management [DRM] that the labels are using in their desperate attempt to play catch up on the downloads thing. No one expected the iPod to explode as it did, next thing, there are 900 million available songs for download but one estimate, the labels freak, and you end up with Grokster v. and the suing of 16,000 [?] people by labels for their heinous crimes.

While the labels, or anyone else, stick the DRM stuff in with their mp3s, people will still be frustrated by what they can and cant put in the pods.

While the mpeg algorithm is genius in terms of getting the file size of music down, anything encoded at 128kb/sec, for me, is unlistenable. The grain is too apparent even in loud passages, and transients sound like shit. People for the first time are gladly taking a hit on sound quality vis a vis carrying convenience.

I listen to music the old fashioned way, nice big fat wav files, 24 bit/96kHz from the Pro Tools Digi002 on studio monitors. After that its just all downhill. After analog, of course, whch still sounds better, and many argue, still is better, then any digital, CDs included.

One things for sure, these little babies have changed everything about the music industry. Wake up, labels.

I would have purchased one of the 20 gig iPods that just play music, no video. You don't really need the video. Return it and just get a 4th Gen. iPod at either 20 or 40 gigs. It'll save you money in the end too. Run it in your Aux. port and you're set.

I love my video ipod for when I'm stuck in traffic. I've got all the simpsons seasons so I just turn it on and play through the speaker. I don't really need to watch the screen so it works out well. It was nice for the 5 hour drive to and from ice climbing last weekend, too, when my only companion was my dog.

I wouldn't trade my PSP for anything else. The screen is absolutely amazing. More expensive and can't hold as much, but the UMD movies look ridiculously sharp, and videos off the memory stick are very good as well. More expensive than an iPod and can't hold as much, but I think it's worth it. It's got a new GTA game, and Wipeout Pure and Lumines are two of the best games of the year for anything. If you can find a Giga Pack, it will come with a 1GB memory stick, big enough to hold a full length movie with decent compression and a handful of TV episodes, along with extra accessories for $350. IF you get the value pack for $250 it only comes with a 32MB memory stick, so you'll need to buy a bigger memory stick. A 1GB stick goes for around $80 if you look in the right places.
