i always enjoy listening to extreme idiots on BOTH sides go back & forth over this issue.

where are the people with some sense?

i
believe in evolution. i believe it all. i believe that it all goes back
to one single point at the start of the universe. but at that point i
have to honestly say to myself what caused the bing bang to happen in
the first place. as far as i know "something" can not be created out of
"nothing".

i was raised catholic, received all the early
sacraments & received my education in catholic schools. i believed
in what i was being taught. when i got into high school & started
learning more about other cultures & other belief structures within
Catholiscm, i started to question my earlier teachings.

now im at
a point where i dont know exactly how it began or where its heading but
i wont be stuck on either end of the spectrum searching for my answers.

i
feel belief should grow with experience. faith is faith. you are never
gonna change a person's faith. but you can change a belief. i dont
believe that science & religion need to be on opposite sides. they
need to work together.

thanks for letting me ramble

I hate this topic since there is really nothing to discuss.
Creationism and religions are myths whereas evolution is science. I
hate the way people confuse science and faith. If you can discuss
a theory of a single "god" creating life as we see it today by
scientific methods (if you dont know the scientific method, look it up
on google), Ill give you a cookie. If you use the word "believe"
without backing it up with evidence then the best you will get is a
black and white. Hell, discuss life as it we see it today by any means
other than evolution in a scientific manner and I'll buy you a box of
cookies. Thats how little faith I have in that there can be an
intelligent and informed discussion on the subject.

yeah pretty clear to me...one is science, the other is fantasy...

I mean, it's just not genetically possible. One couple could not produce enough genetic diversity to sustain a viable population. We would be genetic disasters.

I
feel the same way. The Vatican even came out not that long ago
and said Darwin's theory does not conflict with how they interpret
Genesis.

the Vatican recently
said that they will be making a list of bible "stories" that should be
taken as fact & which should be seen as Canon.

on the one hand i applaud them for taking this step because as i said before beliefs should change as we get older.

on
the other hand how can you still call yourself a religion if you are
going to start changing how you teach your faith to the faithful

Man created god, and then some very smart men saw the potential to have things their way using god, then things have spun out of control since then. If you think there is some god out there, fine, but if there is... he's not interested in our uncivilized world. It's just silly to think a prayer or some creator would help you... and not anyone else that would pray to them. That is the human ego. We are all so into ourselves that to think when we die - that nothing will happen - is just too hard to accept.

It's 2006 and we're really not that far removed from throwing the virgin into the volcano to please the gods.

It's moronic.

If Intelligent Design was science, they would offer a "Measure of
Compexity". They would have observations/measurements about the world, multiple models of potential/probable universes with equations, and they could give you a probability, 95% for instance, that our universe had a Creator. But people just
think the world is "complex", when it's really just basic interactions
(as far as we can tell, there are only 4 distinct forces operating in
nature, and string theory was founded because we think they're all
really the same) between a very large number of entities.

Regarding evolution, the
very idea of a "species" is actually an outdated concept, and we have
changed the way we classify organisms due to the discovery of DNA. We
label genetically similar populations as a "species", but in time that
populations genetic profile changes. That's evolution.

As human societies grew, the primary social institutions changed. In "How We Believe", I think Michael Shermer set Organized Religion as dominating around a population of 1,000 (may have been 10,000). As we grew, we eventually developed legal systems and governments and eventually got where we are today. Religion served a valuable purpose in our social evolution, but it doesn't help inform us about the natural world, nor should we expect it to.

Most of us can write "words of wisdom", or glean life lessons from history. Why people would want to do one-stop shopping and ignore the natural history of their religions (since at some point all of them were made up) baffles me. But then again, 100,000 years ago, you'd have to be pretty crazy to believe some of the things we know now
