During one of my classes, we began discussing (amongst ourselves in a working classroom, not as a class discussion) this topic. I brought up how I couldn't believe that Owen Wilson has an acting career. I've never been so close to mutiny!! It didn't get better when I threw that goofball he worked alongside in Starsky and Hutch into the same category. For some reason, people really like this guy (and his S&H sidekick, whatever his name is). Anyone else have an actor that falls into this category?

PS, sorry if this is a repeat topic, I looked and didn't find it anywhere else......

Jack Nicholson.

Julia Roberts.

I see no reason why either of them are considered "talented"...much less Hollywood Royalty.

This isn't one actor in particular but; I don't give love to actors that play the starring role in a biopic. Jamie Foxx, Joaqin Phoenix, Will Smiff, Jim Carrey, Salma Hayek, Philip Seymor Hoffman, etc etc. The biopic role is ALWAYS their "breakout" role and I'm tired of the predictable "oscar buzz" that surrounds these actors on these pictures.

I just don't think it's all THAT challenging to do an impersonation of another human being. I'm not "amazed" and I don't think they seem "transformed". It's a f'cking impression. Not all that incredible to me.

I'm infinitely more impressed when an actor (writer) creates a character out of thin air.

It's made with real bits of Panther so...you KNOW it's good.

For the most part, you're right about biopics...very safe, very dull flicks that are just an excuse for acotrs to do impersonations, but Capote is actually an excellent "real film." It's just a slice of Capote's life, namely when he was researching In Cold Blood, and like Capote himself did with what should have just been a typical true crime cash-in, this flick becomes SO much more than a biopic. Hoffman honestly deserves any attention he gets for this role.

And calling out Nicholson for his entire career is nuts. Sure, he's been on autopilot and been pretty crappy for the last 15+ years, but he made some stunning films in the 60's and 70's that are going to be classics forever because of how good he was in them.

Hands down for me with no question has to be Kevin "freakin" Costner. I can't stand him. I will never see what's so great about him. I personally thinks he sucks as an actor. I agree with another poster on here I don't think woody allen is that funny at all. Chris walken is ok, he's just weird and usually takes on the creepy roles is all. that's it for me, for now that is until I think of more.

But then he messes with Hoffman, who I've also never met, and I'm like, torn between two lovers. I want us all to make sweet love and be happy together. I'm pretty sure Hoffman would be into it.

Tom Cruise, while one of the biggest money-makers in Hollywood, I bet there's nobody on this board who will admit to giving a shit if this retarded mannequin got run over by a herd of elephants after a night at Taco Bell. What's up with that? He's the first thing I thought of when I read this thread title, (and when I'm looking for something to scrub my squathole with), but then I thought "well, everyone hates him." So who the fuck is watching his goddamn movies! I bet it's fucking al-Qaeda buying blocks of tickets just to make us live with Tom Cruise in our faces for our entire lives. Fucking animals!

And calling out Nicholson for his entire career is nuts. Sure, he's been on autopilot and been pretty crappy for the last 15+ years,

OK, Sister, while they aint Chinatown, or Cuckoo's Nest, Nicholson has still been outfuckingstanding in the films he's been doing lately. Granted, he's slowed down from his peak, but, shit, he's like 90! He probably shouldn't have won the oscar for As Good As It Gets, but he was great in it. It was watching "Jack", but it was a funny, interesting performance. In About Schmidt, I forgot I was watching "Jack" and thought I was watching my father. It's not a big industry-changing film like Easy Rider, but that was a difficult role to actually make interesting AND realistic - frighteningly realistic, if you're from the mid-west like I am. He took the lead as an ordinary man in a small movie and made every minute fascinating. That's one of those movies that I can think of maybe three or four actors that could have matched that performance, but, since Jack is so unusual a person, he gets extra credit for nailing the character of such a usual person.

I think A Few Good Men is in the last 15 years, and I can't think of anything really horrible that he's done, but the tie-breaker would have to be that before the last 15 years began Jack learned that he can't direct worth a shit. The Two Jakes? Ugh! Thank you Jack for figuring out what you do best and saving us the horror of seeing you make a Michael Jordan career move.

I know i am going to get killed for this one, but Chris Walken.

Maybe I have just never seen any of the movies he is in that made him famous, but at 24 years of age, nothing in my lifetime that I can remember seeing him in really stuck with me.

Ever hear of a little movie called Pulp Fiction????!!!!!!
