I've never heard of chords with just number designations.

=

E5, A5, etc. are ambiguous in terms of major/minor, they're usually just the root, the fifth, and the octave up of the root. I think sometimes it's just the root and fifth, for a two note chord. For E5, thats playing a low E, a B, and an E˙one octave higher. Power chords since they are simple to figure, easy to play un and down the neck, and the amgibuous nature of the chord means it fits in just anout anywhere.

Introduce a major third˙[G#] turns E5 into Emaj aka E.
Introduce a minor third [G] gives you Emin aka Em.

hen theyre all the other intervals, sus4s, dim, maj and min7ths, and a few dozen others, then run them across all 12 tone scales, and you're there.

G#maj7sus4/F#; now theres a beauty

Do,Re, Mi... is the major scale mode, so you can play lots of melodies. Think of the notes as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 (1 is the lowest pitch). It's probably in the key of C, but it might be in E. You can play a I-IV-V progression with the following:

I - 1, 3, 5, 8
IV - (1), 4, 6, 8
V - 2, 4, 5, 7

You can also play a jazzy ii-V-I with these

I - 1, 3, 5, 7 (Maj7)
ii - 2, 4, 6, 8

Just practice playing those up and down for a nice little accompaniment.

You can play a pentatonic scale with 1,2,3,5,6,8, and you can play
it cross like a harmonica, but you need to found out what key it's in.
If it's in C, then you need someone to play in the key of G. If it's in
E, then you need someone to play in the key of B.

quote:I've never heard of chords with just number designations.
Can you enlighten a novice?

Once you learn all your major scales, then you can start to think of notes in terms of their scale degree (which number), and that way every thing is relative. I (try to) play jazz piano, so whenever I learn something new, I may learn it in a particular key, like G minor. But in order to apply to the other 11 keys, I have to think of it in relative terms. For instance, if I want to play over a dominant-seventh chord, I need to play the mixolydian mode, and that has a flatted 7th. So, if the chord was G7, I would play a G scale with an F-natural instead of an F#.

This applies to harmony as well. In jazz, the music modulates a lot (changes key or switches between major and minor), so you consider just a few measures at a time when you're analyzing it. The first two measures may be in the key of C Major, and the chords may be ii-V-I (Dminor7, G7, Cmajor7), but then it may switch to a ii-V in the key of F (Gminor7, C7) for a bar or two. By keeping everything general, it makes it easier to decide what scales to use.

Of course, the guitar makes life a lot easier. You can just move your hand a little and voila, new key!
