I was always thinking about getting them....I just didn't really want to give up glasses. Now the people in the television studio at school tell me that I would be better off getting htem so when I'm on camera the light doesn't reflect from my glasses and into the camera..I made an appointment for Tuesday....just wanted to see if anyone here on the board could tell me some benefits and drawbacks to contacts.

You could just get glasses that dont reflect light. I got a coating of that on mine. I want to get contacts soon, I'm just sick of wearing glasses.
Contacts are too much of a pain in the ass for me. I scratched my cornea a few months ago after one got stuck in my eye and was blind for 3 days, so I don't fuck around with them unless its a special occasion.

I wore glasses for over 20 years and contacts for about 15 of those until I got LASIK a few years ago. Contacts are a pain in the ass to put in, take out, and clean. I used to wear my contacts if I were going out or skiing, not all the time. For the last few years I wore them, I would buy 30 pairs of disposables (exactly the same as the regular ones, just packaged differently) and would wear a pair for a few days, just rinsing and storing them in saline overnight, and then chuck them. This saved a lot fo money in cleaning supplies. If I tore one, no big deal, just open a fresh pair. The last time I bought lenses, they were about a dollar a pair, so it was a lot cheaper to do it that way.

Although places will advertise for as low as $500 per eye, a good reputable doctor will generally charge $1,500 per eye.

I'm still too much of a chicken to go for the surgery, so I wear contacts 90% of the time. Yeah, they're a pain in the ass to take out and clean, but I think I look 10 years older with glasses on so I deal with it.

LASIK is the best thing I've ever done. I went from 20/350 to 20/15. It was about $1k per eye (got a special rate through my friend). After my initial consultation, I went in on a Friday for pre-surgery tests to confirm the original consultation results. I then went the following Monday for the surgery. I was in the chair at 9:30am and on a train home by 10:15am. The surgery itself was a couple of minutes, most of the time being the setup. The procedure did not hurt at all, at most you feel a little pressure. It was no worse than a glaucoma test. On advice of some other people who had been through it before me, I went to sleep immediately upon getting home, getting up every couple of hours to put in the drops they give you, and noticing the improvement each time. I was behind the wheel of my car by 8pm. My doctor required you to go back the next day, then another 48 hours after that, then a week later, then a month, etc. all included.

Some notes:
Any side effects I experienced, or heard anyone complain about, where similar and no worse than anything I experienced with contact lenses, and they all went away over a relatively short time. Halos, dry eye, grittiness, etc.

Vision is mostly there as soon as the procedure is done, but takes about 6 months to peak.

Night vision sucks at first, but this also improves. Newer systems may lessen this effect.

Still have a slight astigmatism in my right eye, which was rather severe before, but is now so slight as to be unnoticable except for extreme circumstance. They would have performed a followup procedure if I wanted it done, but I chose not to.

The feeling of wind against your eyes after so many years of lenses blocking it was incredible.

BTW, the drops they give you make your eyes glow yellow in blacklight. I found this out when I went to a strip club client of mine a couple of days after the surgery and scared some of the girls. It was funny once I caught a look at myself in a mirror. Looked liked I belonged in that Kiss video.

i've had contacts for 12 years and they dont bother me as much as everyone else says they bother them, it's just routine for me now to pop in my contacts every morning and take them out every night and change them every two weeks.

i hate wearing glasses in public so i always wear contacts, been thinking about getting lasik but i'm worried that somehow something goes wrong and i go blind for life, so for now putting in contacts every day isn't as much as a bother as it would be to be blind.

I wear "night & day" monthly lenses. They're fairly comfortable, and on rare occassioans I can sleep in them if I have to. I've been wearing contacts for about 8 years and I feel I see better with contacts than glasses.
