They had to choose between nothing or a Casino exemption. It's better than nothing I suppose. I have a feeling a Casino ban will happen eventually.

As long as they don't ban smoking outside, I'll live with it. I've been doing it for over a year now in NYC. Yes, its inconvenient. Yes it sucks when its cold or raining...but the one thing I DO like about it is all the smokers are in one place, congregating, socializing, which is why i started smoking to begin with. I just like smokers. They're more engaging people to be around, for some reason. Maybe bc smoking denotes weakness or flaws, and that's interesting to me.

Don't touch the casinos though. Fucking can't live without smoking at the tables. Nerves would kill me without cigarettes.

I love smoking, but I'm in favor of these laws. It helps thin the herd of the uncool people when the rest of us go outside to smoke and be awesome.

Do you really think it's going to take me by surprise if I do? "Man, I love smoking and suddenly I have cancer! What a shock!"

Do you drink? Do you get drunk? Well guess what...you doing that might very easily kill me or any number of people around you at any given time. So my solution is this...if a place serves alcohol, a substance people willingly ingest that could kill them or people around them for a variety reasons, how about we allow smoking in those places as well? Hell, I don't even need that...a smoking section will do just fine. Because otherwise these bannings are bullshit hypocritcal rulings as long as it's perfectly hunky-dory to stuff yourself with countless other things that MAY kill you down the line, or MAY lead to people around you getting killed.

If cigarettes are SO fucking deadly, then fucking ban them altogether. None of this halfassed shit. Either we can or we can't. You're the "Mr. Slippery Slope" crybaby when basketball teams want to test their players for something that MIGHT kill them down the line...yet this is A-OK! Segregating and infringing on the rights and personal freedoms of people because they do something that MAY kill or harm them or people around them down the line. Yeah, fuck those smokers! MY rights are more important!

Bullshit.

Dancing with the women at the bar... << He knows his Claret from his Beaujolais >> "You can tell some lies about the good times we've had, but I've kissed your mother twice...and now I'm working on your dad..."

I don't give two rats shits if you die from smoking. And quit with the stupid "Just ban it." You know as well as anyone else that it isn't even remotely possible. I'd fucking support it, but it ain't fucking happening.

And I fucking hate this attitude from smokers that you are only doing this to yourself. Pretend I'm screaming this: "I DON'T GIVE TWO SHITS ABOUT THE HEALTH OF SMOKERS!" You are a fucking nuisance and a health hazard to anyone around you. Even in restaurants and bars, smoking and non-smoking sections don't matter. You come out of the place smelling like shit no matter where you sit. You're rights end when I have to breath in your fucking poison when I'm minding my own goddamned business. I have as much a right to be in these places as you do, and you DON'T have the right to drive me away. You made the choice to smoke, other people didn't.

MY rights are more important!

Yeah, that's the height of fucking irony. Your right to kill yourself anywhere you fucking choose to and fuck all to anyone who's unfortunate enough to be around you at the time. That's right's more important.

And another thing, about that "sterling genetics' comment. You know nothing about me. But thanks for taking it to that level in an argument about smoking. I was trying to keep this somewhat light-hearted since I know this is a subject that enrages me, as you see. But no, lets just start being an ass because of a couple of stupid South Park jokes. Great. Thanks a lot man.

More on the study Bulldog linked to.

Chief
among the scientific concerns with the study is that the measure of
exposure to second-hand smoke was whether or not a person was married
to a smoker. “The conclusion that there was no measurable difference
in mortality between people married to smokers and those married to
non-smokers during the period 1960-1998 implies that living with a
non-smoker constituted no exposure to second-hand smoke,” Bonow said.

“Participants
were enrolled in 1959, when exposure to second-hand smoke was so
pervasive that virtually everyone was exposed to second-hand smoke,
whether or not they were married to a smoker,” said Bonow. This is
especially true for data from the 1960s, the 1970s, and even the 1980s,
because of the prevalence of second-hand smoke in many venues outside
the home, such as offices, restaurants, bars, even airlines and trains,
during these decades. Indeed, the concept of “environmental tobacco
smoke” was not even acknowledged at the time this study was begun.

Cry me a fucking river. Again, I bring up the alcohol example. How about cell phones? Those are annoying as fuck and drive people away AND certain studies supposedly show they cause cancer. I'm just seriously pissed that one select group is being singled out for the potentially bad thing they choose to do, yet others are allowed to go right on ahead with their bullshit.

quote: MY rights are more important!

Yeah, that's the height of fucking irony. It's hypocritical when certain things are blatantly singled out and other aren't.

Oh, PLEASE. You have ASTHMA. What, am I supposed to act like the martyr if somebody makes fun of me being lactose intolerant? I love that this argument is hypocritical even on this level since this thread was: A) blatantly making fun of smokers from the start B) people were specifically taking shots at me, including you, before I made any kind of jokes directed at anyone here. So anyone pointing fingers, it's very convenient that apparently my posts are the only ones visible in this thread. Oh, but that's right. "Making fun of people who smoke is OK! Pile it on! But fuck them if they say anything back! How DARE they!"

But beyond that, I still point out your reaction to the Bulls wanting to test a player for something that MIGHT harm or kill him down the line and basing how he gets treated on that possibility, yet here you don't give a damn that laws are being written because of how something MIGHT affect someone's health down the line. Yes, I realize the asthma does make it more appealing to you, but so would banning shellfish from all restaurants for people allergic to them. Again, I'm just asking why are we only banning one thing that MIGHT cause health problems yet allowing others to remain? And then people bring up the SMELL issue? Like I said, what about people who douse themselves in hideous cologne or perfume?&n

Again, you don't fucking know what you are talking about. I don't have asthma, dick. If I did, I wouldn't fucking care. I have something else, much worse, which made me think you were mocking me in the first post. And then the second post really hit home, in ways you just don't fucking understand. That tends to happen when you don't know what the fuck you are talking about.

I

Whether or not Eddy Curry has a heart condition, and whether or not he gets DNA testing has no direct effect on the health of anyone around him. If that were the case with smoking, if I could sit next to someone while they smoked 10 cartons and not be affected one bit, then I'd have no problem whatsoever. Alcohol is harmful when abused. I've never broken out coughing while sitting next to someone chugging a beer. I've never walked out of a bar reeking because everyone was drinking inside. Smoking is harmful when used anytime, not just to themselves but to everyone around them.

But why is the instant solution from point A to point Z with nothing in between? It should be up to each establishment, as long as they are privately owned and funded, to decide this. I object to governments, federal and local, stepping in and declaring it EVERYWHERE.
So every "your mama" joke ever posted on this site got the same reaction from you? Because I was pulling the equivalent of that and "what's the most absurd insult I could possibly think of" and throwing them together. How can something be a "direct personal attack" when I know absolutely nothing about you? Apparently you think I was somehow going right for something I knew would hit you where it hurt. Yeah, get over yourself. I don't know a thing about you...how am I supposed to? How did you know any of what you posted about me wasn't horribly traumatic?

"You DICK! A bunch of goth kids in black trenchcoats shot up my school! My best friend died in my arms! HOW DARE YOU!!!"

"Fuck off, asshole! I'm an albino and making fun of my condition is lower than low."

There is no "that level" here. I made an obviously ridiculous insult in jest and you're thinking like I purposely went out of my way to hit you with something I somehow apparently MUST know is the most offensive thing to you personally. Again, get over yourself. It was a JOKE. If it's somehow traumatic, well, I am sorry. That sucks that things randomly said to you on an internet message board could at any time be the worst insult possible. But get off the cross and quit acting like I fucking knew that beforehand. I guess we'll never be seeing you EVER saying anything that's even remotely offensive or insulting to anyone here, even as a joke, because, hey, you never know, right?

What genetic disease could be worse than being born Snoogans?

As for the argument at hand, I have to side with Hbox. I'd take Mojo's side of it if we were talking about the seat belt law for adults, but smoking does affect those around you. That study linked by Bulldogckes is a clear cut bullshit paper, debunked be 99% of the important journals/science rags. I love how BDC just links it with the disclaimer of bias and claims it as all the evidence he needs "game, set, match". And what's the percentage of lung cancer patients which are linked to smoking (including second-hand smoke especially before the late 80's? I believe it accounts for around 90% of the cases or more. I can't cite it, but I remember reading it somewhere. Sure Mojo, we feel so bad for the poor repressed smoker. How do you move on from here? You speak of smokers as if they have to overcome some social stigma, burden or pressure wrongly placed on them. Is it time to start the smokers movement? Perfect timing since it's MLK day, and they thought they had it bad. If only we could understand the trials of the persecuted smoker. Here's a hint, smoke in private. The public isn't the only group being protected here, it's also the workers at these establishments who spend countless hours in these conditions many days a week, perhaps throughout their lives. Sure one might say get a new job, but for some this isn't a very viable option for many reasons. I love the new law.

Again, what's wrong with letting PRIVATE businesses deciding if they want smoking on their property or not? If a business allows it and they lose money, you can bet they'd ban it in a heartbeat. If they don't, and the business thrives, why shouldn't they be allowed to have smokers inside? And in any case, I'm not asking for anything more than a smoking section. And how am I the only one bothered by the government making laws that apply to private property in regards to what legal substances people decide to ingest? So you'd all be OK if they somehow ban foods served in restaurants above a certain fat or calorie count because it's technically bad for you? If it's the nuisance factor, what if they ban cell phones from being used anywhere except outside? This IS a slippery slope...leave these decisions up to the business owners. The government can regulate federal property in this way, and that's it.

I am not sure what is up with moving the age from 18 to 19...
especially considering that the average 16 year old girl looks about 25
nowadays...

I CAN say, however, that I am all for the new laws
about no smoking in bars/restaurants. I have many friends and
family who smoke and believe that a persons lifestyle choices are their
own. It's all good.

But as a singer I can atest to not
being able to see my own guitarist through the massive cloud of smoke
that develops in a poorly ventilated bar on more than one
occasion. LOL. Not to mention it is not the best thing for
the chords.... AND alla that second hand smoke leading to cancer and
blahdeblah....

My thoughts.... if you choose smoking then rock on wit yo bad self.... but don't bring me into it, ya know?

PLUS...
I take great care in making sure that I am always clean and smelling
like Angel ... cig smoke is probably the most un-sexy smell ever ...
icky.

I am not forcing you into any of my bad habits... don't bring me into yours dollfaces.

wheeee

don't forget 25 feet away from any opening to the building including
windows and you gotta wrtie to the department of health and human
services to complain about a place breaking the rules

Went to 3 bars last night.....it was so cool to be inside and not feel like you're going to pass out from lack of cigarette-free air. Although the bars did seem a little bit empty last night. Is it due to the smoking ban or the holiday weekend?

Whatever the case, it was nice to come home after a night of bar hopping and not smell like cigarettes.

Smoking ban ftw!!!
