View Full Version : Eerie glow when it snows

So last night I should have stayed in PA. I go out there to practice weekly with UNHALLOWED. It went from rain to sleet to snow and before I knew it, the whole area was an icy mess. My car doors were frozen shut, that SHOULD have alerted me to the possible problem. But I left anyway.

Well it took me like 3 hours to get home which is over twice as long as the normal trip. When I get home, the power is out in our area for whatever reason.

I stepped out of my car into a very surreal feeling world. It was at least 11 pm and everything was somehow still illuminated slightly. I could see the whole world clearly through the wind and the blowing snow. But where was the light coming from? Most of the surrounding area was dark and the cloud cover wouldn't let the moonlight through.

I don't know why but the whole world was disturbing and comforting at the same time. As I said, there was enough light to see everything clearly but not enough to make out colors so everything looked black and white. It was very easy on the eyes and just looked great. I went back out in it for awhile after I dropped my bag and new printer inside.

Before you ask I wasn't drunk, stoned or even tired at that point. Anyone know where that light comes from?

I think it's light from houses/streetlights etc reflecting off the snow--but what do I know. Where's Mike the Teacher when we need him?

I'm not sure if they had power but I know Bloomingdale, Butler and Kinnelon were out for awhile last night. On my ride home I saw several towns with and without power.

That's part of my question I guess. Can light that far away light me up just reflecting off snow?

I also love the turn my thread took. I knew this was a weird thread when I started it. Let's all just have some fun.

in NNJ, we live in an area with a lot of "light pollution" meaning that the light from buildings, street lights, parking decks, air ports, NYC etc.

all of this light gets reflected around and fills the air, or bounces off of snow.

just to prove it to yourself, next time you are in PA, look up and see how many stars are out. then when you get home look up again. you will hardly be able to see any. all that is a result of light pollution

So that probably means a huge shopping center a few towns over or street lights a town or two over can light up my area if it's all reflecting off the snow on the ground and in the atmosphere?

Kewl.

Where's Mike the Teacher when we need him?

=

Day late... dollar short... all of that...

Atmospheric physics I found to be one of the most difficult studies for me, like, how to explain why the edge of that cloud ther is pure white but that part at the bottom is black like coal.

But in all of this, it's basically about the way light scatters. Scatters = how many times it might bounce around. There are conditions where there are molecules of the right size, snow, dust, ice, the H20 in the air aka humidity, anyway there can be conditions such that it's such a strong scattering atmosphere that distant lights can fill the sky down the the horizon with all sorts of glows.

Scattering is really why the sky is blue, all the colors are coming from the sun, but those blue photons scatter around the most, bouncing off the N2 and 02 and H20 in the air, so they will be coming at your eyes from all different directions, so the light seems like its coming from every direction, filling the aky with this blue light from seemingly every direction. On other planets in other atmospheres, you can have different colored skies, for earths atmosphere blue scatters more then the others, the scatter less before something absorbs that photon.

Red/other sunsets = the angle has changed so much that now yellows and red start to scatter more, and blue less, so you see these other colors in the sky at those times.

And yes were in light pollution central in the US, if not the world, from DC up to Boston, and image at night shows one gisnt blob of light. I'll grab that one off the web.

C+ explanation at best.

yeah, the glow, it's from this stuff called snow. see, snow is
white, and white reflects all light, so, yeah, it's not really magic or
all that scientific. you cover the ground with the color white,
and you'll get a glow from all the light bouncing off it.

oh, and light pollution is not contained to the NNJ part of the Tri-State Area.

Like I said its misunderstood, if snow was all thats needed, every snow field would cause this. It doesnt, you need the stuff in the atmosphere, or you end up with a bunch of snow and pitch blackness, like at the poles during loal winter. Without the atmosphere and particles to reflect, sky would be black as ink no matter how much snow was on the ground.

As for North NJ light pollution, the photo above shows the horrific light pollution of the whole USA. And the part around NYC for hundreds of miles up and down I-95 is just one blob of polution. Altitude and it being farther away = less light polution, but all parts of NJ pale utterly to the dark skies, the truly dark skies out west, and in remote parts of the world.

Said glow is my favorite part of snow. As a K-12er, I would always check the skies early in the night before snow started, you could usually tell if it was gonna be a decent downpour depending on how bright the sky was.
