let's talk about sex baby, let's talk about you and me.
let's talk about all the good things, and the bad things that may be...let's talk about SEX!
i love that song.
anyway, i have a question.
when did your parents start talking to you about the birds and the bees?
my mother was always open about this. my mother was the one who taught me about sex, and she didn't use the old birds and bees analogy. she was very open and direct with me. she was like, "ok, so here's the vagina and here's the penis...that's how you get pregnant." this was when i was about 9 years old.
my father and i never talked about sex, but i don't mind yelling out to him, "i got my period today, dad!" from the second floor in our house.
so, how did your parents start talking to you about sex?

The only sex talk I recall was when I was about 5...I asked my mother where babies came from. She told me that when the mommy and the daddy rub their tummies together, it calls the stork and he brings a baby. God knows how long I believed that.

There's a Dave Barry book from quite a while back about having children. On the back of the book is a little cartoon of a sperm and and egg getting together for some good loving. When I was quite young, I found this book and asked my parents what the significance was of the white snake crawling into the fried egg was. That's when they first explained the basics.
The latter, more involved discussion came about when my father was driving me to school one day. The conversation went like this:
"You know your mother and I have sex, right?"
"Um, yeah."
"You know what that is, right?"
"Yeah..."
"Alright, then we're done."
In retrospect, I'm glad my friend Geoff showed me that picture of a woman tuning a guitar with her vagina and the questions that followed it, for it spared me from a sex talk with my dad with him and my mother as the examples.

My mom took me aside after she learned I was getting my period and said, "You probably know more about sex than I do."
My mom's sex talk was brief: she caught me and my boyfriend fooling around one day and said "YOu know, a man wont buy a cow if he gets the milk for free"
Everything else I learned from my precocious friends in like 3-5th grades.

Sadly, my parents were very old school and never spoke to me about sex. When I became interested in girls, I went to the library and researched it. (I'm not kidding LOL)
It was one of my first realizations that practical application beats research
EDIT: I'm completely open with my kids about everything and they are comfortable asking me anything. (One of my greatest parental successes). I'd hate to have them think that there was anything "embarasing" or perish the thought, "dirty" about sex or any other topic.
