I, like many other people, enjoy a good peacful debate, much like me, chris, mojo , and to a point, hbox are having in the cheerleaders in baseball thread. but that thread is basically no longer about that. So i figure we maybe have this and if people wanna debate something in a thread, they can just come in here and then everyone can follow without shitting on someone's thread. Its worth a shot.

So ill pose the first shot. I honestly would say hockey is the most pysically demanding sport, even over football, if it wasnt for skating being such a subtle workout. What i mean is, if you run jog once around an ice rink sized surface, you would be a bit outta breathe and a little burn probably. Where as a medium skate around a rink isnt that bad. It just doesnt pound as much since you slide. Its almost like you can do it longer, but its still a great workout.

But since you have to run in football and get hit more then in hockey, its gotta be football. You dont quite need the hand eye coord in football that you do in hockey or baseball, but you probably have to think and use your mind more in football than any other sport. For some reason thats exausting

over boxing HBox? Soccer is nuts with all the running, but soccer i wouldnt even say is as bad as a marathon in running. A triathlon, if you wanna get that deep, is by far the most demanding.

I mean more of like popular american TV sports. Including soccer, id still have to say boxing. You can train yourself to recover from running, i dont think anything prepares you for years of getting beat to shit

Getting retarded doens't make a sport physically demanding. All it means is that the people putting themselves in a position to get punched in the face for a living were close to there anyway.

As far as football goes, it depends on which position you are talking about. Kicker and in most instances QBs aren't very athletic. Lineman are generally incredibly athletic............ considering they are obese. RBs and WRs need to be athletic. LBs and CBs probably more so. But I'd say the most athletic players in any sport are safeties in the NFL. They need to be athletic enough to cover WRs and RBs, yet strong enough to stay with TEs. They need to be strong enough to take on lineman and backs on the blitz. They need to be sick fast when they blitz from the secondary. They need to be able to make one on one tackles with RBs. They need to be able to cover tremendous groun on the field, sideline to sideline. And they are often the QB of the defense, calling out plays and making sure substutions are correct. So, as far the dominant U.S. sports go, I think the safety position in the NFL is the most phsyically demanding. They need to everything, and do it well.

Yeah, but you're not playing every down. If your offense is any good, you're only playing half the game. Not even that depending on what package your defense is running at the time. I would say the power forward position in basketball is the most demanding. If you're a starter, you can be expected to run pretty much nonstop for 40+ minutes and maintain an inside presence, jostling around for rebounds. Also, it takes a decent amount of physical dexterity to make a 15' jumper with Shaq looming over you.
Sure, the Safety is going to play most every down. Still, even if he plays EVERY down, he's only playing half the game. Also, he doesn't even have to catch the ball on pass plays. He just has to keep the other guy from catching it.
I think I strayed off topic a bit. As far as physically demanding goes, I think that endurance plays a bigger part and considering that ADF makes a good point. Although, getting through the course of a football season healthy is the toughest of all the major sports. Every single team has to count on losing at least one crucial player for the entire year going into any season, and probably more than one.
As far as just athletic ability, I think I'm right. I'd take guys like Brian Dawkins, Sean Taylor, Troy Polamalu and Ed Reed over anybody in any sport.

yea but i mean punishment. I know power fowards take alot, but thats never a guy runnin 4.4 speed at 230 pounds into you when you usually arent that big. Basketball is demanding, and the most punished player in the NBA is allen iverson, but you arent getting contact to the degree, and you arent carrying 25 lbs of shit on your body.

I also think the physical demand increases when its not in your hands. Yea there is contact in the NBA, but you usually see it, it doesnt usually knock you over. You need to have endurance and be able to run, but you know what you are getting.

When you are getting crushed blind side, your body isnt ready for most of that, and it cant react the same way as when you know. Its worse on your body cause you cant protect yourself. The shock to your body alone adds to it. Plus you have to do all that and think like you are taking SAT's all day every sunday.

True, you're not taking hits in the NBA anywhere close to where you are in the NFL. Maybe you get an elbow in the forehead, but that's it. Still, I bet you're more tired after playing 40+ minutes relatively straight on a basketball court. If your offense is rolling, the defense can be sitting down for ten minutes at a time, not counting commercials and timeouts.

try this Dave, running without being touched 75 feet, standing around for 15 seconds, doing it again. Or basically running as hard as you can while tryin to push a guy doing the same thing in the other direction, using every muscle in your body. Or tryin to bring down someone who is 260 and doing everything he can to push you away.

Its like why running on sand is harder. You have to push off and cant get as good of footing. Its harder to run 40 feet on sand then 75 feet on flat wood. Cause of resistance. You push against alot more resistance in football

In baskletball, you are always playing in controlled conditions. You don't start the season playing in 90 degree weather and end playing in 10 degree weather. And you don't have to deal with mud, rain, sleet and snow on the way.

you also can control the game more. You dont HAVE to run in basketball, in fact, alot of teams dont run alot. You run in short spurts but unless you stole a ball, you usually arent sprinting down court.

Every play in the NFL, you go all out, unless you play WR's, then some of you take plays off. But for the most part, you are going all out every second whistle to whistle

I'd like to inject a way of figuring out which sport is most demanding, which will probably lead to some surprising results. The human body grows and matures until about the age of 33, then it starts to slowly decline. Thats why many atheletes will have their peak years in their 20's and early 30's (except of course for Barry Bonds cough cough). We can all agree Golf is the least demanding, and one way to tell is that golfers can stay at the top of their game well into their 40's. Basketball and Baseball players can be very productive well into their late 30's, and sometimes even into their 40's.

By this way of looking at it, The two sports which are most demanding are Football and . . . . drumroll please . . . . . Tennis. In both sports the average player is finished by the age of 30. Also, in the lower weight classes of Boxing most are done around 30 as well.

I'll read the rest of the thread later, but this is in response to BDC's last post. You can't use the method you speak of bc certain sports rely more heavily on certain skill sets than others. Sure tennis is tough on older players, mainly bc its a percission/agilty/speed based game. There is no hitting, size isn't a factor and most injuries is brought on by a players own actions. Sorry, tennis is the winner.

My pick is simply based on the fact that some sports are physically demanding all the time vs. some of the time. Also, in say boxing, if one is good they don't really endure much stress on the body. It's less of a sport then a fight that sanctioned. One can fight 1-3 times a year as Tyson did and accumulate only 4 minutes total of ring time. I just can't chose boxing (which I love and actually fought back in junior high).

So for popular mainstream sports it has to be either hockey, football or soccer. Soccer demands a lot of the body, but really falls short in terms of physical contact, and the slide tackle doesn't compare....sorry. Football and hockey commit a person from end to end with constant running and contact, no matter how skilled a player is. Yet I submit that not every position in football actually is involved from play to play so overall comparing the sports as a whole is tough. A lineman's job, or a running back's is surely a constant beating and physically demanding. Yet a db rarely is called on to make a tackle or join in on the trench warfare.

Hockey however IS the same for every player of every line of every skill level. Everyone gets hit, skates hard, skates fast and is dead in the course of a 1-2 minute shift times 20-30 times a game. The goalie's job is the only one that differs and they have to contend to constant full body motion with a ton of equipment. I also play some goalie and I've never felt more tired then after a full game in net. Let's also toss in that even no fighting in hockey is allowed. Sure there is a penalty, but it hasn't stopped even the most skilled player from dropping the gloves from time to time. On top of this, getting hit by a puck or stick fucking hurts like hell. Players even at my level have broken countless bones while wearing pads by taking a hard wrister or slap shot. Guys at the NHL level hit speeds of 100+ mph so you can only imagine that pain, and hockey demands of you to block shots constantly. Hell, we even have a guy on our team that has broken bones on goalies through there pads his shot is so fucking hard and heavy. I can only imagine taking a slap shot from a Blake or Modin type shot. So if we're going solely on mainstream sports my answer is simply hockey based on the fact that I've played soccer, hockey, football, tennis, raquetball, boxing and many others.

But if we're adding in others like wrestling, Ju Jit Su (UFC's), ironman competitions, marathons and others, then it's a whole different story. The argument is just too vague and they all come with a different set of physical tolls. But I can tell you that wrestling leaves you with nothing left what-so-ever. So add in that fact that the UFCs are basically a wrestling match in which anything basically goes, it would then get my vote. It's a fucking street fight in a ring by trained animals who have chemical imbalances. And one should mention that marathons are terrible for the body and there isn't even a physical contact component to them (besides the constant running impact with the ground). And to do an iron man one must be in amazing shape. It's not as if you can just keep running like so many of my awfully sports inclined friends manage to do in order to complete a marathon (and then they throw themselves parties for completing). I guess I'll shut up now.

It's like a koala bear crapped a rainbow in my brain!

Boxing is for me in a different category altogether.

Football, baseball, tennis, golfing, etc all of these have the goal of scoring more points [less for golf] then the other guy/guys.

Decisions and TKOs aside, the aim of boxing, ultimately, is to disrupt the other guy's nervous system to the point that he can no longer function, at least temporarily, and there are tragic cases where the disruption never goes away or kills.

All the footwork and fancy shit in the world is trumped by a tyson-esque fist, like Mickey in Snatch, one big hit, and it's cue the Xmas music.

As far as positions in football go, the most physically demanding position is Middle Linebacker. In man defence You're in charge of the RB, either you're stopping the inside run, sprinting to cover the outside run, or trying to cover out of the backfield. Plus on most running plays, either the FB or a pulling G is keyed on handing you your ass. In zone D, you sometimes cover a TE or WR over the middle. Plus when you blitz, you're going up the gut instead of forcing an overload. you have to be a complete athelete to play MLB

I agree with Spoon (!). Hockey is the most physically demanding of
mainstream sports.

Hockey however IS the same for every player of every line of every skill level. Everyone gets hit, skates hard, skates fast and is dead in the course of a 1-2 minute shift times 20-30 times a game

guess you can consider figure and speed skating similar except for the body checking and equipment?
