View Full Version : Stern to be Censored by Sirius?

Today's New York Post is reporting that Sirius is "developing an internal standards-and-practices document that will set boundaries for Stern and other shock jocks".

The article goes on to say that "XM, which is now home to shock jocks Opie and Anthony, confirmed that it has had its own guidelines in place for some time, but declined to provide details."

If XM has a strict standards and practice policy in place, it isn't apparent to me by listening to 202. There doesn't seem to be a lot of censorship going on.

If Sirius' policy is a "sterner" version of XM's, Howie may feel he made the wrong choice in Sat companies. But I can't believe that they would have paid all that money for him just to start pissing him off from the get-go.

Please. This is all a ruse. Howard's whole schtick in the past 5 years has been about being censored and his fight to "be free". Now he has no enemy and he can't deal without having one. Its hard to be original when you've been phoning it in for 5 years. Now he has another "enemy" (real or artificially generated) to rail against, thus giving him 4 days of material per week.

I feel sorry for the saps who spent their money on Sirius units simply because they saw a return to the glory days of the Stern show. A guy I know, a major Stern fan who works with my wife, told me that he feels ripped off because he's getting a sub-par show that relies too heavily on the f-bomb.

I always felt like XM had these standards in place. They are certainly looser than FCC, but if you listen, OA and RF are somewhat restrained. There are times that they stop themselves and find a different word to use instead of "F" for example. They never use the N word, have been discouraging all the racism that comes in from the south. Sure, that's just a smart thing to do anyway, but if it were truly a "Wild West"type of environment on satellite radio, do you think they would care as much? Well, maybe the guys would, but the callers still wouldn't, and it would be anarchy!!!!

OK back to earth.....

XM silences a portion of the profanity off of 65 and 66, although they are rated XL. I wonder if there are industry (Non FCC controlled) standards on content for pay stations. There would have to be, lest there be hardcore porn on HBO at breakfast. Anyone with knowledge on this?

Even when nothing happens, Stern is still in the news. It was talked about in the 1st week that they were having to take meetings, specifcially regarding Bubba's content, but also regarding (potentially) their own. It would be great to actually find out WHAT is verbotem, however - I vaguely remember in the early 1990s, D&M actually swiped the big blue Infinty book of restrictions that (for some reason) they weren't allowed to even see (even though they were the ones saying and doing the things). These things in writing always find a way of making it to the surface.

If XM has a strict standards and practice policy in place, it isn't apparent to me by listening to 202. There doesn't seem to be a lot of censorship going on.

YOU Can bet the words "sex" and "church" appear somewhere near eachother on the list.

I agree with Tall James and Curtoid that this is just more media hype to keep Hoo Hoo's name in the mainstream media and with it the opportunity to sweep some laggard suckers into the li'l doggie tent.

However I think there is a line which neither XM nor Sirius want their people to cross. Some of our attorney friends on the board can probably explain this better but I believe there are two different standards in broadcasting "adult" entertainment - "indecent" speech or entertainment which is protected under the First amendment but can be regulated by the gov't. (eg FCC rules) and "obscene" material which is not protected and can be banned. Since I'm not qualified to give a legal opinion on the difference I'll give an unlicensed guess that indecent entertainment only gives Justice Thomas a chub while obscene material gives him a full rod.

Don't forget that a nation-wide platform is a double edged sword for these guys. Broad (or narrow) casting into the red states always gives a Bible-thumpng attorney general or district attorney a chance to make a name for him or herself by protecting the baby Jesus from obscenity raining down from the satellites and trying to shut 'em down in their bailiwick. And that creates cashflow problems for the companies. And I don't think that the "I'm paying for it so I can see/hear whatever I want" standard has really been upheld in any courts but I would be happy to be proved wrong.

I've listened to 3 Howie shows now.

Up until 6 months after I got my XM, I was planning to get Sirius also. Once I listened to the Ron & Fez show, and started to really like it, I figured that I really didn't need another bill.

Now that I've heard the show.....thank God I didn't pay for this crap!!!!

His show is the same as the terrestrial show, with some "naughty" language. Nothing new. Nothing innovative. He's done. He has no new ideas. At least good ones.

And as for "Bubbas'" show...I'd rather listen to the Phillips Phile. And I mean that.

The $500,000 million goes to 25 people on the Howard Stern show staff, another 10-20 on the onDemand stff and another 15 people working for the "news" staff. Then there is the folks under Bubba - maybe as many as 60 or 70 people are under the staff for HS. Who knows what everyone is making, and I'm sure HS is making an ungodly fortune, but that sum is for staff and programming for 5 years.*>

ALSO - they have 6 minutes of commercials an hour, 5 hours per show, and they are supposedly charging anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000 per minute {if you split the difference ($15,000)}, 4 days of shows a week, 45 weeks of the year - there is $81,000 million a year right there, and that's not counting revenue from any other shows. I'm sure my math is way, way, way off.

AND that's not counting the money, the (at least) $20 million in subs that they can currently attribute to him - and it's got to be more.*>

I really think Sirius will hit 4 million subs in no time, and by this time next year the difference in subscriptions between XM & Sirius will be so close that it will no longer be an issue. The equipment may still be off, but the signing of Stern is going to close the content gap, and is going to make them very rich.

JMO

Especially when they find out he's giving his fans subpar radio.

I just don't see the gap closing as fast as some people think.
