If your cell phone is about to ring, and your near your monitor or on a landline phone, do you get scary interference/static noises just before it rings?
Is it an electromagnetic pulse? I am always scared that it is like a burst of radiation or something. Is it? Also, I often have the phone in the same pocket as credit cards or my ID badge for work, do you think it can damage the magnetic strip in these things? Is it dangerous?

The interference is more common with GSM phones (Cingular, T-mobile). Has to do with operating frequency.

Cingular does it too.

I
have a Verizon and Cingular phone (one is my personal phone, one is the
work phone) and both are made by Motorola. Never had an
interference problem with the Verizon phone, but the cingular one
has problems.

I can sometimes tell from the static/noise for maybe 30 seconds or so before, that my cell phone is about to ring. Just wondering if its harmful. Mine is Cingular too. Nokia.

Ow yes, by the way: Nokia phones have exploded in the past. I couldn't find any pictures but they were Belgian phones sold in the Netherlands. They had the wrong batteries and blew up after a few days. I've got a brand new Samsung.

It just has to do at the frequency at which GSM (Cingular etc.) phones
operate vs CDMA (Verizon) phones do. Both phones emit the 'static' that's
being amplified by your alarm clock/stereo/whatever but we can only hear
the GSM ones.

My friend pointed this out to me once, as he got it on his Toyota's radio. Being a salesman, he used this as an opportunity to throw out his cigarette, turn down his radio, and roll up his window before the phone even rang. I had one once that did that with my computer speakers. Also, with my hands-free set in a quiet space, I can hear it sort of "turn on" in my ear before it rings. I'm not interested in keeping this thing in my shirt pocket, that's for sure!

My pal Grim Sanity's phone does this to his computer monitor and speakers every now and then. He knows what the signal interference sounds like when it's just checking and when it's a call.

I don't like that to tell you the truth. The phone gets signal checked every few hours sometimes it seems, and then sometimes he gets actual calls.

A little too Big Brother for my liking.

In reply to some of the comments about exploding phones, I had a Samsung VGA 1000 (sprint) literally meltdown on my night table. I was woken by a burning smell about 3am. The phone, which was plugged in, was glowing red. I burnt my fingers unplugging it. The battery was bulging, the keypad had gone liquid and had run into the guts of the phone, and both displays had ruptured and gone black. The rest of the phone was all distorted. Yes, Sprint replaced (upgraded) the phone.
