<p>Damn if that session of congress did not truely look like a house divided. </p><p>That was one hell of a slap in the face of the president, when he announced that congress shot down his social security reforms and all of the Democrats jumped up and applauded that 'victory' with the Ice Queen of the North (Hillary) leading the way.</p><p>This is going to be an interesting year.</p><p>I did like how he was aggresive in his stance to find alternative cleaner fuel. Sounded like he was trying to either stick it to the middle easterns....OR....tell the american people "hey guess what...we are not going down in oil prices so we better find another way and FAST!"</p>

Bush, last night:
And to keep America competitive, one commitment is necessary above all: We must continue to lead the world in human talent and creativity. Our greatest advantage in the world has always been our educated, hardworking, ambitious people, and we are going to keep that edge.
Our government has a responsibility to help provide health care for the poor and the elderly, and we are meeting that responsibility.
For all Americans -- for all Americans -- we must confront the rising cost of care, strengthen the doctor-patient relationship, and help people afford the insurance coverage they need.
Bush, today:
The House on Wednesday narrowly approved Congress' first attempt in eight years to slow the growth of benefit programs like Medicaid and student loan subsidies, sending the measure to President Bush.
The bill passed by a vote of 216-214, largely along party lines. Republicans hailed the five-year, $39 billion budget-cutting bill as an important first step to restoring discipline on spending. Democrats attacked the measure as an assault on college students and Medicaid patients and said powerful Washington lobbyists had too much influence on it.
The measure is a leftover item from the GOP fall agenda. Bush is eager to sign it into law.
Less than 24 hours. A record, even for him.

H-Box please. We're talking about a TWO TRILLION dollar federal budget. 39 Billion over 5 years is not even worth talking about. To put it better terms, the Feds will be spending roughly 11,000 billion dollars and cutting 39 billion. It's a joke.
And thanks to a jump in coporate earnings (for all of you big business bashers) the Federal budget is now running a small surplus. Good things can happen when you actually let businesses make money. Unless of course, they're oil companies. Then even so-called republicans like Specter will start talking about "windfall profit taxes".
There's no federal budget surplus. There's still a massive shortfall, numbers just came in slightly better than expected. And I wouldn't put it past this administration to lowball projections just so they can look good.
As far as the cuts, I read elsewhere that the Medicaid cut wll result in 100,000 people dropped from eligibility. And this isn't the first time federal college aid has been cut, and I can say that from personal experience.
As far as the huge deficit, that hasn't stopped Bush from not only pushing to keep the huge tax cuts that caused the deficit in the first place. Hell no, he keeps pushing for more.
But really, this is about pointing out his hypocrisy. Of course, most politicians do it and barely anybody is buying his shit anymore, but rarely do you catch a guy saying one thing one day and doing the opposite bot even 24 hours later.

Weren't these cuts passed before 9/11? I do know he campaigned on them. But I guess given the circumstances that is a fair assessment, but these were huge cuts, and there is currently a huge deficit, and there is no recession anymore. And he still wants everything renewed. And he'll probably get it. And it makes no sense, even if we accept the prepostrous notion that Bush is really committed to making the deep budget cuts needed to make a big difference. No matter what, I don't think this deficit will be solved without some tax increases.

No, Congress has passed a few new tax cuts I'm certain of it. Nothing huge, but a little bussiness tax cut here, a little there.
And, right now, if you are not calling for tax cuts, you are standing for fiscal sanity. If you call for tax increases, you are not calling for government to spend more, you are calling on them to actually have the money they are spending.
