i was teaching a lesson today and I wanted to show a dvd on my laptop
which was connected to my digital projector...now i was able to see the
desktop display and everything fine, even the dvd player window
appeared to be normal, the problem was the movie screen itself was
black where the movie should have been playing...im no computer whiz
and i am dumbfounded as to how i can rectify this situation, any help
would be greatly appreciated

this also happens when you remote desktop to another machine and try and run a video. It has to do with 2 things, copy protection or resolution problems.

try to lower the res on the laptop and see what happens.

Also, were you running this in windows media player?

Were you trying to run both the laptop display and the projector at the same time? If so it has to do with the overlay settings. Did you try toggling to projector display only? Usually Fn+F9, F7, or F5 - depends on make and model of laptop.

Was the movie clip embedded in a PowerPoint presentation?

Were you able to see the border of the slide you created? If yes, your computer probably couldn't think aboot doing all those operations at once.

Next time...try to make the movie clip it's own slide. No PPoint border. And..don't have it start automatically. Make it so that YOU have to activate the movie clip.

I'm betting on PaulF's solution. I use these for teaching and have one at home for movies and you have to use the Function keys to toggle between the Laptop Display as video out, and/or sending the signal out to whatever port the projector is connected to.

At least that's what seems the solution when its showing fine on the laptop but you get nada projected.

Question for DBSean....

When/if you figure out the cause of the problem, could you please post it and also post what you did to correct it?

It might help me (and others) troubleshoot in the future.

THNX.

quote:even the dvd player window

black where the movie should have been playing...
Were you not able to see the movie at all? Or, did you see it only on the lcd screen?

If you could see it on the lcd, then it's definitely an overlay issue. If you're using PowerDVD, you can go into the configuration and disable video hardware acceleration if you can't find your overlay settings.
