Not completely but its really low right now. Dumped out on mine after howie started for a minimal profit after the time invested in watching/researching.

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=SIRI&t=1y

Could be down to 3 a share soon if predictions are right, almost want to buy back in. Seriously thinking XM will just buy them out at some point in next 2 years.

I wouldn't buy a dying business that's made many bad business descisons and signed a lot of huge contracts.

If they could dump Stern, Martha, Eminem and Simmons and take on a few of the specialty Metal and other stations, that would be fine as long as they don't up the subscription price.

For what purpose? They both broadcast from the same two cities, their satellite coverage is nearly identical, and the core content offerings wouldn't change from what they are today. Also, Sirius is likely to continue their technological lag as long as receivers continue to be developed independently.

All that said, Sirius is doing fine. They started a year after XM, so think about where XM was a year ago and compare that to the Sirius of today. Solid subscriber growth is going to continue for both companies for a while.

That is an impossiblity. When XM and Sirius got their licenses with the FCC, they had it written in that they wouldn't be able to buy each other out. It might have been the FTC even, not sure. But no one wants a monopoly in Satellite Radio...trust me.

Is it possible an outside party, maybe Cablevision or something like that, could acquire both of them in a few years.

It's just correcting itself. Sirius and XM were way over valued for a long time. Neither is going to blow up big until they both start turning profits.

I think both are still a good long term investment. In fact I still have my Sirius shares. I'm thinking about buying some XM now that it's down around 25 a share now.

RIP Welshie

Eventually the FCC will issue more licenses and the restriction of XM & Sirius merging will be lifted and it will happen - they will eventually merge, and they will be like Clear Channel & Infinity (if they are not out and out bought by them). It's eventually going to happen, but not for a ways off.

I very much doubt these will be the only two competitors forever. Remember when it was just HBO? Then Showtime, Cinemax, Starz...

Give it a couple of years, I bet cha anything you'll see competition popping up...

Surely there have been acquisitions that were worth more than either of these companies are combined.

I find it hard to belive that either of these companies would be biggerthan say an ExxonMobil merger.

Pepsi purchased Quaker for 13.4 billion so I again doubt that these 2 companies are worth more than that.

What if one of them went bankrupt and closed down entirely ?

That would leave one standing alone and thus the monopoly.

Yea, I mean all Stern hating aside, I don't think his deal will bankrupt them, it just won't pan out into the huge juggernaut of subs they wanted.

America is about choices so if you want Sirius, go for it. I know I'm where I want to be having done some research about Sirius to keep informed and actually touching SIrius receivers and looking at their channels.

What I dont get, is if Sirius has lost 2.6 billion since they started, how they are going to come out of that hole selling subscriptions at $12 a pop.

I mean if a major company, which has been aroun loses even a million in profits they are laying people off.

Both companies better hope cell phone carriers dont get into the radio biz. With where the new phones are headed (they're practically laptops), and the bandwith they already deliver each carrier could carry XM or Sirius or start their own satellite companies carrying combination of free and pay channels. Which could make both Sirius and XM obsolete.
Starting another satellite radio company right now would be like starting up a new search engine to compete with Google, Yahoo and MSN. Sirius and XM dominate the market and I doubt another company can just come in and come close to the amount of subscribers (millions) these two companies have.

I'm talking about adding a radio service feature for an extra couple of bucks a month to your cell phone bill. I-Pods have added podcasts, and the cell phone providers already have the set up for streaming audio. Its a no brainer if you're Sprint or Verizon. Its not an original idea, its been discussed in trade magazines. Phones are and will be adding more and more streaming audio and video. The I-Pods days are numbered (you can download MP3s on some new phones), and satellite radio can be delivered via your cell phone as opposed to a Delphi unit. XM and Sirius should be exploring this as a new market, if not they may become obsolete for the simple reason of convenience.
The technology is virtually there, but you have the two major impediments of battery life and airtime usage. I would imagine the market leaning toward the mp3 functions of recorded and downloaded music/programs rather than streaming satellite.

Of course I am not a big "phone guy" so I may be way off base, but as a caual observer that's my opinion.

Also, I would bet that instead of taking the time and money to develop their own content/system/etc., the phone companies might likely contract with XM &/or sirius to provide it. In that case, satellite still wins.
