During the winter, my skin dries out bad, and I get rashes from it and it itches. I get it on the shins of my legs and especially on my knuckes. I hadn't found anything that helped until I found this last weekend:

I havnt tried it on my legs yet, and Im not sure why it works, but man, its good. My only problem with its is that it has a slight tea tree oil scent to it, but I thought Id share my find if anyone has a similar problem. It seems to work for a really long time and through several hand washings.
Does anyone else get this problem with their skin in winter? What do you use for it?

The backs of my hands near the knuckles get so dry and cracked, they sometimes bleed. Neosporin Ointment (usually a store brand version, because I'm cheap) takes care of the problem.

knuckles and wrists for me affect me during the winter and do bleed. my right hand in particular is completely red all winter long you can see the outline its freaky. As far as the Burt Bees goes, it works great for me in the summer but does nothing during the winter, I have tried all products they sell and nothing works, so I just manage it the best I can possible and try to wear gloves as much as I can or just hide my hand not to freak people out

My friend said she swears by Burt's Bees. I tried it and it does do the trick.

Still, I feel gay for using hand lotion. With the bloody knuckles and chapped skin, I can always say I was in a fight -- and impress the ladies!

I get bad dried out skin above my eyes and near my nose. The ONLY thing that relieves it even slightly is Aquaphor or Eucerin

I was in a local hardware store last week getting some supplies for our shop. I saw that Bag Balm on the counter and made the mistake of asking the old guy behind the counter what it was....

HOLY SHIT! I had to hear about how it's actually for Cow's utters but the farmers found their hands stayed uncracked with it. Then he went into how they don't want to say it's for humans because then the FDA would want to do this and that and BLAH BLAH BLAH.

I wanted to buy some, but just because that old guy bored me to death, I left it. I'll get it somewhere else.

One of the reasons I despise winter is that the skin around my knuckles is all dried and chapped and is now starting to bleed. Though I feel gay for asking this, can you wise posters recommend a good lotion to use to cure this...preferably an unscented brand?

At Restoration Hardware there's this stuff they sell called "cracked hand relief" which works really well. They sell big tubs of it as well as travel sizes (that you could keep in a desk drawer at the office or something) but, being that it's Restoration Hardware, it's pretty pricey.

The other failsafe is Neutrogena Swiss Formula Unscented Hand Cream

Most guys love it and it's almost hand-wash proof.

Lastly, and this is what works when your hands are chapped but not bleeding, I like to use Badger Balm Healing Balm with cotton gloves overnight. While I have the scented version at home, it does come in an unscented version at the Badger Balm website.

Heres the kicker, most lotions have types of alcohol in them, so even though they moisturize, in the long run I think they do more harm than good, It may be Something you dont want to do, but I guess becasue of school and all I am not into the whole "natural oils" thing. You can get a natural oil, try grapeseed oil, no fragrance, I get that one at wild by nature, and you can put it in a small spray bottle or use the bottle it comes in. Grapeseed oil is good because it has less "slip" than other blended oils, or you can go for either an avocado oil or apricot oil. They even have olive oil for skin, which italians have been using forever as a beauty secret.

I use about 7 to 8 different lotions on a rotating basis and the two things that i would reccomend above all are the Neutrogena Norwegian Formula hand lotion and Burts Bees Grapeseed Oil & Honey Hand Creme

I think Gaia was right on with the oils except that it might interfere with daily tasks and/or get on your sleeves(if you're going to be constantly reapplying which it sounds like you are). Anything with that oil base in it though would probably work just as well.

My girlfriend in highschool had very severe skin cracking on her hands during the colder months and she would sleep with vaseline filled gloves(sounds odd, i know)on so her hands were in a constant state of moisture when she was inactive. It looked like it worked a lot for her.

My knuckles get cracked and cut in the winter. I use Neosporin ointment on them, when that happens. Works great.

It's that time of year again as my hands are starting to turn to leather. Liz's suggestion of the Neutrogena Swiss Formula Unscented Hand Cream has been a godsend: it coats, soothes and relieves.

Fuck you cold weather!

It's spring, and as someone who works outside in the dirt for a living it is time for me to lose my wintertime "bitch hands". No more sitting in the office with my soft, supple palms and fingers.

The problem is the transition. No matter the amount of lotion, my hands will dry up and crack, often bleeding spontaneously. Good times when you shake the hand of a new client and leave a blood streak on their palm. Real fucking classy.

This will last for about two to three weeks, until my hands morph into one huge callous.

Gloves? To paraphrase IMSlacker, gloves are for retards and old people.

Should I cut them off?

use gloves but cut off the fingertips of the fingers you use most.
seems to work for some. and helps control the re-opening of cuts and sores that are forever trying to heal.

also... use a strong hand salve like burts bees or something from l'occitane and wear gloves when you sleep.

i know it sounds faggy... but it works. it's your choice, buckaroo.

Use cetaphil lotion on your hands. My daughter's hands are terrible!!!! Seriously bad, like I was getting notes sent home from daycare and I used my dermatology lotion on her hands and it worked miracles on her hands.

My thread had nothing to do with dry skin, and I am offended by the merge.

It was a story about one man's struggle against the negative aspects of his chosen profession and life's passion, and his yearn to reach a delicate balance between suffering and nirvana.

When my kids were infants we got a hold of some butt paste for diaper rash and it is super awesome for diaper rash. Now, it is smelly and globby, but if you put some on at night you might just wake up with skin softer than a baby's bottom.
