LYON, France - A man considered a mastermind of the USS Cole bombing that killed 17 sailors in a Yemeni port in 2000 was among 23 people who escaped from a Yemen prison last week, Interpol said Sunday.

I always feel better with Interpol on the case. Even if they don't get their man, they'll at least look fabulous!

Tell me about it!

First of all, the official story is that these fuckers escaped by digging a 140 yard tunnel out of a prison inside the military intelligence headquarters in the middle of the capital city here. Bullshit. Every so often the city digs a trench in the middle of a street to lay a water pipe or something and the sight of Yemenis working draws a bigger crowd than the World Cup. They escaped with the help of security personnel - there's no other plausible story. The good news is that this is the first I've heard of this level of insubordination from President Saleh's security forces. If the US and the European donor countries hammer the shit out of Saleh for it then I imagine they can get him to root out whatever disloyal officers were responsible for this. He's been very obedient since 9-11, (allowing us to blow up a truck full of Yemeni al-Qaeda suspects in Marib, forcing all mosques to register with the government and monitoring them for extremism and anti-Americanism, fighting a bloody conflict in the North that was sparked by al-Houthi tribesmen chanting anti-American and anti-Israeli slogans in the capital), and he should be able to be convinced to reimpose discipline in his forces.

This story was first reported 3 or 4 days ago. At first I thought they'd be caught by now because the country is covered by a web of military checkpoints - travelling in the bad places means hitting a checkpoint every half hour. Some of them are a joke - I always wear a skirt and chew huge wads of qat when I travel because about half the time the soldiers, who are supposed to take a special interest in both controlling and protecting me as an American, will just wave me on when I'm doing these Yemeni things. But now that it's been this long, I figure they're either hiding in the capital or they had lots of help getting into one of the areas that the government doesn't control.

Either way, for the time being at least, they don't have the time to go blowing up westerners here in Yemen because they're too busy trying not to get caught again. I'm also pretty sure that,at the highest levels of government, they want to catch these guys. And they probably still will. I think the real question is whether this is a sign that the president is losing the loyalty of its security forces. That would be very bad in the long run.

If I listened to the State Dpt warnings I'd be back in DC hiding under my bed right now.)

The embassy said it had urged Americans to avoid crowded areas, limit visits outside their homes, cut back on travel and avoid trips after dark.

There are only a small number of Americans in impoverished Yemen, which has seen repeated kidnappings of Westerners by tribesmen in recent years.

Besides Americans working at the embassy and a language center, there are believed to be a few U.S. military experts and some Americans working in the oil industry.

What am I, chopped liver, (which, here, is called "kibda" and it's fucking delicious!). There are only a handfull of americans here, and they're the most whacked group here - even more than the Germans! About 2/3 are Christian fundamentalists coming here to learn the language and snoop around looking for ways to convert the poor misguided savages here. They're really fucking creepy.

USATODAY.com - Yemen rejects U.S. request to interrogate detainees

The United States had asked to interview detainees held by security officials following the Feb. 3 escape of the prisoners, he said.
