When you have a cold, what store bought brands or homespun remedys seem to do the trick for you?

I have a cold now, and had been taking Tylenol cold liquid, both the day version and the night version, but it doesnt seem to kill it. I wake with a splitting headache from the night stuff.

Today Im tying this instead:

The pharmacist said she would take Claritin and some tylenol for the symptoms I describe.

(Just gathering public opinion mods..)

Basically, I have a head cold. My head aches because of mucous thats in there, and my throat was hurting and raw. I had nasal drip. No fever though.
I went to a walk in medical place yesterday and they took a throat culture but it came back negative today for strep. The Dr was pretty useless, only said to take over the counter stuff.
A friend was telling me about Alkaseltzer Cold.. But I couldnt figure out what was best.

I took the Coricidin at 6:30, and so far my headache is gone and my throat doesnt feel itchy at all. Ill have to wait and see how I feel in the morning. The mornings have been particularly rough for me!
I usually gargle with salt water or a product called Alkalol that they have behind the counter at pharmacys, but you dont need a prescription for it, you just have to ask for it. I occasionally flush out my sinuses with the same stuff. Works great!

Deal with it.

Not the "Tough Guy" way or anything, but I've always heard taking stuff to stop congestion and other symptoms actually slow your body from getting rid of the sickness and just prolongs the cold in a slightly more mild form.

So I just deal with it, bite the bullet and try to get to sleep a little earlier that week I have it.

These days I just grab some DayQuil. For a while in college, I was "toughin' it out", but you just feel soooo much better with a little medicine (as much as I hate to admit). Tons of fluids, extra sleep, echinacea containing cough drops, and Cold-Eeze also get consumed. I really don't get sick very often though

it's pretty conveniant when you work outside because you can hock a loogie easier and that gets alot of bad stuff out. when you're indoors for example like in an office you're more prone to swallowing more of the bad stuff that your body is trying to get out...

The old-timey remedy I know is lemonade with honey and a shot of bourbon, heated it to a temperature in the "hot tea" range. Helps to soothe the throat and get you to sleep -- especially if you are somewhat liberal with the shot of bourbon.

If your doctor will give it to you, the Codiene Cough Medicine is the best...It clears all the crap out of your throat and chest, plus it downs you out real good...I recommend drinking it out of a champagne glass to get the full effect.

I was real sick last week and a dude in my class told me to get what basically amounts to a miniature teapot, fill it with lukewarm salty water, tilt my head to the side and pour it into a nostril. Once your sinus is full, pick your head up and blow it out. Repeat in the other nostril. He claims that some guy he works with does this as soon as he gets the first inklings of a cold and hasn't been sick in 15 years.

I didn't do any of that shit. I went to the fucking doctor and got some antibiotics like a normal human, but if anyone can confirm or deny the efficacy of the other method I would certainly be interested.

If I were any better, I'd have to be twins!!
INRI White people are so scared of blakjeezis INRI"Well, maybe there's a god above, but all I ever learned from love was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you." Works wonders clearing your head, though I admit I was skeeved the first time I did it, because it seems so unnatural, but people have been doing it for thousands of years and it is not bad. I was even prescribed a "nasal douche cup" by a Dr once

I really swear by plain old echinacea and vitamin C. But you have to take them right at the first hint you might be fighting something...that's the way it works best. I really do swear that most of the time the echinacea (http://www.seacoastvitamins.com/topic.php?health=echinacea) at least shortens the duration of the cold and the severity. Often I'm able to avoid a full blown cold entirely. That and tons of water. Never tried the neti pot. Just can't quite make myself do something so weird.

The first feeling of either a sore throat or sickness coming on he takes two shots of Wild Turkey before going to bed. The next morning he feels like a million bucks and swears this keeps him healthy.

if its congestion, i do lots of excercise. the body, somehow clears a path for extra O2. i try to cough up and/or snot rocket out as much funk as i can.
for a fever, its COLD wet socks on the feet. the colder the better. sucks the body heat right out.
i normally dont take any meds. anything my body needs to fix itself it already has. i hate taking meds. i think that they really just hinder the body, not help it. more of a cure for a symptom not a cure for the problem.
NyQuil/DayQuil + Airborne (yes I know, I know but it still has 1000mg of vitamin C) + Plenty of herbal tea with honey and lemon.
Also the last tea of the day to include a double shot of cheap brandy....
