My acct was able to get me a hefty refund this year for my taxes. I want to get him a bottle of scotch, but something better than dewars. I know johnny Walker has different color labels but which one is the best out of them? Also are there other good brands?

You don't want scotch, son. You want Whiskey. Irish whiskey, to be precise.

Jameson's 12 year old, or Tullemore Dew 12 year. Smooth as silk. Great with a cubano.

Johnny Walker has (I believe) Red, Black, Green, Gold, and Blue, in order from lowest level to highest (and blue is damned pricy). Anything from Green on up would be a very nice gift. The Johnny Walkers are all blends -- not that that is necessarily bad, but some people prefer a single malt scotch. My personall favorite for a single malt is Macallan. The 12 year old is very nice, but the 18 year old is very, very good.

I like the smoky single malts and also recommend going Irish for smoothness. Go with your scotch choice and then pick up a bottle of Jameson or the like for 20 bucks for St. Patty's.

All scotch just tastes like scotch to me. Really expensive stuff? Yep, that's scotch. I don't have a refined scotch palate and I don't plan to build one. The bottles sure look fancy on the shelf, though.
Man, I sounded like Moe right there. Sorry.
I've tried all of the Johnnie walkers, and blue is really expensive, like $200 a bottle. It's almost like drinking a cloud though. The green, I didn't like. It kinda tastes like drinking grass or something. I thought the gold was amazing. very complex and creamy. It's about $50-70. Black is a good as well. I think it's about 30-40. Red stinks. Johnnie walkers are all blends, and they are good blends. If you want a single malt, there are tons to choose from, and there is no one right choice.

Johnnie Walker Blue runs anywhere from $120 to 175 a bottle. But, the best thing to do is go to a GOOD liquor store and buy a $50 or so bottle of single malt. Something that is good, but the guy won't be afraid to drink.

I'd just go to the liquor store and say " I want a good bottle of Scotch for around $50. What do you suggest?" I'd do it that way.
