I had a Canon Powershot S40 for a long time, and I was really happy with the picture quality. In fact, many a picture of RnF parties were taken with that camera. The settings on it were for M2, Fine quality

Sadly, the slide cover for the camera began to break down, and although the camera still worked, I decided it was time to retire it.

I got a Canon Powershot A610 for Christmas. It was a five megapixel, well-reviewed camera.

I like the feel of the camera, and it's a very easy camera to use. I even set the defaults to M2, fine quality. However, I feel very unsatisfied with the camera.

The problems are the following:

1) The picture quality, even though this is a five megapixel and the old one was a four megapixel, is horrific in comparison.

2) When I'm using autofocus for snapshots, About 1 in 10 pictures will come out blurry, as opposed to never having a blurry snapshot with the old camera.

When I get home, I post some picture comparisons to show was I mean.

JerseyRich... ball's in your court.

are all the settings set to auto ...? blurry pix can come from a bad combo of shutter speed and light (flash) ... try using the formatted settings for low-light, 'action,' portrait and such

i've been using the Fuji FinePix S3100 for the last year and have taken hundreds of amazing (albeit digital) pix ... great camera at a great price

Canon usually rocks, I mean theyve been around forever, weird. I use the Rebel, the digital SLR, but for that quality you pay the price and the thing is huge; not for throwing in a pocket.

The sheer number of MPs isn't as important as good optics, a crappy lens, or a lens system that is stretched to all the distortions, chromatic aberrations, and edge-faults; these will give crappy pics no matter how big the CCD is.

OK, looking back, all of that is utterly useless. My guess, the learning curve for the camera may take a while, meaning I took shit shots for a long time, and am still learning stuff all the time.

Blurry pics usually = low light forcing the shutter to stay open too long, flash photos I think default to 1/60 of a second, good enough to stop most non-action subjects, but without flash these cameras can be frustrating as hell, the shutter stays open god knows how long, so you get the light, but a uselessly blurred pic; you either have to find in the menu where to:

- Increase the 'film' speed to a high ASA, like 800 or 1600; you trade graininess for light gathering, but it helps for...

-Manually decreasing the shutter speed in non-flash photos. I have no idea if the camera you have does this; again, you trade off the amount of light pouring in for sharpness.

It's all a balancing act. Consumer reports is always reviewing digi-cams; if you find this isnt the one for you, take it back; I bought a couple of pocket sized 'Elph' cams that were very compact and high megapixel, and took atrocius unusuable pics.

Some shots Ive taken

I'm not sure if this is your problem or not but there has been a hush-hush recall going on due to faulty chips for a lot of models.

http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB113036700399480540-a19XaVrSzPcGNlv5Gmp_TgcLE_E_20061027.html
