I think there's enough of us here on the board using Macs to be able
to help one another out with certain programs and applications as well
as issues we might have on this or other sites. I figured I'd start
a thread where we can seek some solutions to problems that arise.

I
also ask that Windows users don't use this thread to rip on us and tout
the "superiority" of their Gates machines. Be happy you're in the
majority and leave us alone!

That being said, I'd like to pose the first question.
What third party program have you found to be the best for viewing
Windows Media files such as .wmv, .asx, etc.? I'm running OS
10.4.5.

I'm using VLC (VideoLAN) and MPlayer with varying results. Any other suggestions?

You're going to need us Windows users to say something in here or the 3 of you will just wait for the others to respond.

A guy at work recently asked me to fix his computer. He didn't tell me it was an Apple. Although I've built PC's before, I've never even used an Apple. Turns out the hard drive was bad, so after removing about 40 screws on this Apple G4 Powerbook, I replaced the hard drive.

He didn't have any of the disks for it, and since he's just using it to surf the net and check email, I decided to try and put Linux (Ubuntu) on it.

The disk runs fine, and boots to the CD from my pc, but I can't get the G4 to recognize it at all. Any idea on what I'm doing wrong?

I tried holding option/c down during the boot, but no luck. I've gotten to the menu to choose the boot device after start up, but only the hard drive is listed.

I'm pretty sure Ubuntu only works on Intel-based Macs. That one still uses the old Motorola processor, I'm pretty sure.

Edit: Quick checks on Ubuntu.com and apple.com confirmed both my statements. You'll need to find a Linux distro that does work on the Motorola processors.

Thanks, that makes sense.

Any idea if any other version of Linux runs on this Mac?

Reynolds. It won't work on a G4. It has to be G5. It has something to do with Motorola processor v the new Intel proccessor.

Black. Use "apple" C and "apple" V. This is universal.

And just a word of advice, since this thread came back up. If you must buy a Mac, don't get an iMac. Not that it is a bad machine, but if a component fails, you may have to trash the whole machine. It really is a shame that a new Mac tower is over 2 grand.

i use the vlc player for anything quicktime won't run.

my only issue that i've had from day 1 with my macbook is the xm player. when i first started to use it the xm player would open up, then if i clicked on a channel the channel would open up in an tiny window. it would play for a while then start repeating itself. i finally got it to open up in the xmplayer window like on xp, but occasionally it will start to repeat itself. really really annoying when i'm trying to listen to the shows.

i'm sure this probably makes no sense. & the dude in the apple store could only make the player open up in the xmplayer, but no one could figure out why it repeats.

There is a program called Flip4Mac which plays WMV as though they were quicktime. It works perfectly. I mainly use the program so I can listen to the online feed from XM.

FYI you can find it a lot cheaper (free) on certain sites that are out there.

Anybody using OmniWeb now that it's free? It's a browser built on the Safari platform but with a lot more useful features; kind of like Firefox meets Safari. It's a third party build that you had to buy in the past but the developers have decided to offer the latest version free.

DOWNLOAD IT HERE. (http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omniweb/download/)

So far I like it a LOT better than Safari.

just plugging in your ipod should work. if you dont have one, you can sign into itunes, and try to download something you already purchased. the library should recognize that you are trying to get your library and the entire library will download. it happened to me and i was happy

Yeah, I too thought that just syncing my iphone with the thing would work, but last night that resulted in erasing all my apps from my phone, and none of the songs from the phone went to the account. I dont get it..it's my account! Why cant they show me my songs!! Ok..I'm gonna try the buy something I already bought...but now I gotta go into my old puter to see what I actually may have bought.

hey chris, do you have your old mac?

you just need to move the files over via the network or fire wire.

your actual library settings, like ratings and playlists are all saved in your home folder, itunes preferences...believe theres three files...

also in the application support folder theres an itunes folder.

for your purchased stuff you just have to authorize the comp in itunes...you can authorize up to five comps.

if you need more details let me know and i'll go down to my mac and tell you exactly where everything is... also let me know exactly what you're trying to keep (playlists/ratings or just music)

well if you dont have your old mac or your music on a computer you can use senuti (http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/)to copy files from your ipod to your comp

ChrisTheCop
05-09-2009, 10:09 AM
well...i kinda found instrux in itunes ...but theyre complicated as hell...i really dont see why once i authorize my new puter, my iphone cant just reverse sync with the new puter.
It's drawn out and complicated, and now its telling me a step to delete my songs but not to worry cause theyre somewhere else on my puter.... ugh...i'm not tech savvy at all can you tell?

Instrument...this is a macbook but my old puter is a pc...

I was hoping to get this done b4 work...but here it is, time to go. fuuuuuck....

KnoxHarrington

Simply take the Itunes folder from your old computer, and put it in ~/Music. (If you haven't seen this particular shortcut, ~ means "home folder".) Then just add them in the library. That's pretty much all there is to it.

A iPod or iPhone will sync back purchased songs into your iTunes library, but not stuff you didn't purchase. Blame the RIAA for that.

Senuti did it! Well, the free version didnt do shit, but 18 bucks later, all my songs were transferred from my iphone to my macbook. Thanks for the help.

Now, Senuti apparently only works for song files... all my apps are still stuck on my old puter, but I'm thinking that shouldnt be a problem.. but what do I know?

This is so not true. I dropped my macbook about 3 months ago and fried my hard drive. I emailed itunes after my new disk was installed and they allowed me to re download over 2000 purchased songs, audio books, and movies, without any issues at all. The guy who answered my email even gave me helpful back up tips so I didn't have to go through this again.

The only thing I needed to prove it was me was my username and the last emailed receipt from Itunes.

If the apps are free, just re-download them. Don't bother moving them over.

Though, in that case, just copying the actual app files, which on a Windows machine should be in the folder iTunes/Mobile Applications, should do. You don't have to worry about the library or playlists here; just grab the files. I'd just point out that when you update an app, though, it does keep a copy of the old version, so you might not want to just get everything. But just throw that folder onto a flash drive or something on the PC, and bring it over to the Mac. That part's easier than moving the songs.

Black. Use "apple" C and "apple" V. This is universal.

if that was universal it would be "windows" key + C

but its not. just the letters. And i am guessing that is because when keyboard makers print the keys on the keyboards they some time put the shortcut key labels on the front of the buttons so you can see them.

So if anything its universal because of the keyboard manufacturing.

And is this thread for apple users only?

Why are there Mac people in here.

I lol also because this is in the Off-topic section. This way it can get more traffic.

most users of Mac/Apple dont go to the tech section.

Well I remember them allowing a ton of people to do this a few times when a bad version of Itunes came out late last year and I had a few friends that did this several times so maybe it's the luck of the draw on who you get answering your email.

I just love Apple, so I might be biased, but I have found the company to be very accommodating and wonderful to deal with for big and small problems.
